Mindaugas III (Recovery of the Ancient Secret of Nemunas Monks Brotherhood)
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) April 29, 2008
To recover the secret where the last descendant of the Great Lithuanian king Mindaugas resides - 8 brave men followed the advice of an old boat man Pavelas and paddled down the dangerous Verkne river, meeting dangerours storks, grandmas and their mythical dogs (sumpurni). Finally they found themselves back home, though now they know the secret - one night they found the next Lithuanian King Mindaugas III peacefully sleeping like Jesus Child and not having the slightest guess of this great future. A remark about environment: polluters and greedy consumers, do not even poke your nose into this little paradise which is left on the earth. But I filmed a scene of crashing Chernobyl-type nuclear reactor in Ignaline, which haven't yet happenned bout is very probable - you deserve only to live next to danger you have created, and then maybe you will understand the priority of saving natural environment over your greedy consumer-driven desires.

The Atomic Show #091 - Alexandra Prokopenko journalist and blogger at Atom Watch Blog
from TPN : Atomic April 27, 2008
Alexandra Prokopenko is a Belarusian journalist living, working and studying in Sweden. She spoke with Rod Adams while on holiday in Kiev, Ukraine. (MP3 - 21.3 MB - 01:01:45 M) Listen to Atomic Show #091 Here! This show truly demonstrates the individual power and freedom provided to the world by the Internet. While we talked via Skype video conferencing (without additional charges above our internet connection fees) Alexandra was in Kiev, Ukraine celebrating the Orthodox Easter holiday while I was in Annapolis, Maryland on drizzly Sunday afternoon. Disregarding the two hard drops of our Skype connection, it sounds like we are in the same room or at least in the same town talking over a very clean phone line. I recently met Alexandra online through the introduction of a mutual friend. She is a young woman who was a four year old in Belarus at the time that the operators of the Chernobyl power plant decided to perform an undocumented test procedure and ignored all warning signs to the point where they blew up the reactor. Alexandra, like many of her contemporaries, has an enlarged thyroid and a few other medical problems that she attributes to the effects of the materials released during the subsequent fire, but instead of becoming a bitter victim, she chose to become an inquisitive journalist and fact seeker. We talked about a number of different topics including the accident, energy supplies in Eastern Europe, the Ignalina reactor in Lithuania, Sweden s current plans regarding its nuclear future, Russia s recently announced plan to build a large power station in Kaliningrad for the electricity export market, and the business practices that she observed as a translator working for Gazprom. Alexandra is a fascinating person, an experienced print, radio and television journalist, a linguist (she speaks excellent English, Russian, Swedish, Belarusian, and can get by in Polish, German, French and Japanese), and a world citizen with a questioning attitude. Please listen carefully to this interview and share it with your friends. I am sure you will not be disappointed and may even be energized - like I am - to find out that there are people like Alexandra in the business of informing the world about what they know and what they can find out.

Another look at the legacy of Chernobyl
from Making Ripples: post-corporate adventures in Floyd County Virginia February 03, 2008
Przewalski Horses of Chernobyl - this last remaining wild species of horse on the planet is still thriving in the dead zone Ronald K Chesser and Robert J Baker are two scientists from Texas Tech University who learned tough lessons about politics, bias, and the challenges of doing good science. Growing Up with Chernobyl, their painfully honest account of their research and the many blind alleys they ran into, is fascinating reading. It is an object lesson for those investigating global warming or any politically charged subject. Some of the things they discovered during their research on the effects of Chernobyl:Its alway wise to maintain some humility Various studies on wheat, birds, and humans have concluded that mutation rates are greatly elevated and that the evolutionary fitness of the organisms is reduced. Other studies failed to find any increase in the rate of genetic mutations... Good science is a beautiful thing, but it must fit within an existing framework of policy and strategic plans or it will be very difficult to finance. Policy makers want concrete conclusions and results, not probability estimates... Even then, a good idea does not always attract funding. They spent a considerable amount of time trying to understand how applications of the scientific method can produce results that are so contradictory. When funding is an issue, there can a tremendous temptation to produce amazing and satisfactorily convincing reports instead of worrying about quality control. One of the problems is that physical features which appear to be mutations can be a result of local genetic variations, geographical variations, or radiation induced mutations. It takes a well-designed test to determine which is the primary cause. They mentioned a study of barn swallow mutations by T.A. Mousseau from the University of South Carolina as an example of conclusions which in their opinion are interesting but not necessarily conclusive. You should read T.A Mosseau's research initiative and draw your own conclusions. You may find that his charming photos of Ukraine farm life are easier to understand. T.A. Mousseau has also posted a beautiful and evocative set of photos of the przewalski horses which run wild in northern Ukraine. The przewalski horse is the last remaining wild species of horse on the planet, according to many sources. On a personal note, I find that the more I learn about Chernobyl, the less judgmental I become. The complexities of this disaster and its after effects are still being uncovered. It may take new developments in science to map out all of the ramifications of this disaster as it applies to the Ukraine. Some inhabitants are observably deformed and crippled for life. Others live with high radiation levels and are apparently healthy. The one thing we can agree on is that we do not need more disasters of this scope. How we prevent them is a matter for continued study and discussion.
