Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1938 and raised in the San Joaqu n Valley, California, Montoya's work includes murals, drawings, and paintings, but he is best known for his silkscreen prints. Montoyas work reflects his unwavering commitment to a global agenda of promoting the dignity of labor and exposing assaults on human rights. In 1968 Montoya co-founded the Mexican-American Liberation Art Front, arguably the most influential Chicano artist collective in the movement.
