At CeBIT a couple of weeks ago I got the chance to talk with two German startup companies that were there to present their innovative products.  Benjamin Fritsch from VIOSO filled me in on their Smartprojecting product that makes it possible to adapt any projection and show it on any surface.  The Smartprojecting system consists of a camera, a computer and a projector and the correction of the content is done right before it is projected.  The geometric and color distortions as they would appear with normal projection can be dramatically reduced and the correction works pixel accurate. Andreas Wiratanaya from CanControls showed me their facial recognition wheelchair with a video-based facial expression controller.  CanControls specializes in digital image processing for advanced man-machine interaction.  The wheelchair software analyzes the facial expressions and gestures of the driver and can be controlled by actions such as blinking, tilting of the head or opening of the mouth. I spoke with Nikolai Roth from zweitgeist at the CeBIT in Hannover a couple of weeks ago.  He showed me their product called Weblin, which is software that enables people on the same web page to see and communicate with each other.  While you are surfing, you and others on the same web page are visible to each other as small avatars and you are able to interact and chat with each other.  The idea behind Weblin is to make the Internet come alive and create the largest virtual world of all.  Nikolai filled me in on how Weblin works and what kinds of features are available.  For more info about Weblin, check out their website… http://www.weblin.com German version of video… http://www.on10.net/blogs/lorigros/CeBIT-08-Weblin/

At the CeBIT in Hannover, Germany I spoke with Noora Guldemond from metaio about their "mixed" reality products.  Metaio is a small startup company from Munich, Germany that develops augmented reality concepts and solutions.  Augmented reality is a technology that allows virtual 3D information to be superimposed seamlessly onto a real environment at real-time.  metaio's products and services include professional software and hardware solutions for a wide range of applications and consultancy services ranging from selecting a system to process integration.  In this video Noora explains how augmented reality works and shows me 3 of the cool demos that they had on hand at the CeBIT and I had tons of fun pretending that I was Harry Potter for a few minutes. Internet Explorer 8 Beta had its premiere on Wednesday in Las Vegas at the MIX.  Yesterday in Hannover, Germany IE8 made its debut in Europe at the CeBIT.  Shola Aluko, Microsoft Senior Product Manager Internet Explorer, was on hand to do a session on Internet Explorer 8 Beta for Developers.  Before his session, I had the chance to talk to him about what is new in the Internet Explorer 8 Beta and get a short demo.  While you can’t see many details on his laptop monitor, hopefully his description is enough to whet your appetite to download the IE8 Beta, give it a try and let the IE team know what you think.  Localized versions for German, Hebrew and simplified Chinese will be available in the next month.
