Today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Americans have a personal right to own a gun. In a five to four vote, the court struck down a Washington D.C. handgun ban as unconstitutional. The ruling says the constitution does not allow an absolute prohibition of handguns used for self defense. What's your reaction to the ruling? Should individuals have a right to own a handgun? A truce between Israel and Hamas has entered its third day. If the day closes with the ceasefire still intact, Israel says it will begin easing its year-long blockade on the Gaza Strip. For ordinary Palestinians in the territory, this could mean finally being able to buy furniture and other non-essential goods, which have seen sharp price rises due to the heavy restrictions. In episode #83 of pop!talk, Ebonia explores the ways to conquer the very serious battle of gang violence. In the public health field, there has been two ways of thinking in ways to derail violence. One focuses on environmental factors, such as limiting gun purchases and making them safer, and the other approach focuses on behavior by promoting anti-drug and safe sex campaigns. But now, thanks to Dr. Gary Slutkin there is an alternative. Dr. Slutkin, an epidemiologist and physician, who worked in Africa for ten years battling infectious diseases compares gang violence to that of an epidemic such as AIDS, and wants to treat it as such. Dr. Slutkin says he will go about containing gang violence as he would go about containing any other infectious disease, with the ultimate goal being to alter behavior and what is considered acceptable. The recent surge in fighting in Sri Lanka's civil war is taking a heavy toll on the country's civilian population. The Red Cross says more than two hundred people were killed and three hundred wounded in the first two months of this year alone, many of them children. Bomb attacks have become more frequent since the collapse of a ceasefire in January between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels. One of the worst was a bus bomb which claimed 22 lives.
