Can't Smile Without You is a song written by Christoph Arnold, David Martin, and Geoff Morrow, best known in its rendition by Barry Manilow. Can't Smile Without You was the first single to be released from Manilow's album Even Now in 1978. The song was released as a single in 1978 where it reached the number one spot on the U.S. A Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft the following year. Manilow's version had slightly different lyrics from the Carpenters, such as the Carpenters's line I can't laugh and I can't walk / I'm finding it hard even to talk, was changed in Manilow's version to I can't laugh and I can't sing .I'm finding it hard to do anything On behalf of the songwriters, publishing company Dick James Music sued George Michael for plagiarism in the mid-'80s, claiming that the 1984 Wham! single Last Christmas lifted its melody from Can't Smile Without You. Rat Monday - 19 min. (1988) Thousands of San Francisco unionized construction workers walked off the job on March 7, 1988 to protest the anti-labor Associated Building Contractor's ABC convention which was being held at the Moscone convention center in San Francisco. This demonstration was one of the largest construction workers protests in San Francisco in the last thiry years. The Labor Video Project was there to record the action as well as interview many of the participants in this historic demonstration. Even before seeing the tune set to a dance sequence that surpasses any movie choreography we've seen since 'Moulin Rouge,' Deschanel was an unapologetic fan of the Philly hit-making duo. "I love early Hall and Oates, really early, the Philly years," she tells Spinner, then adding with the fervor of a true fan, "I love Hall and Oates. Don't get me started." Hall and Oates isn't the only '70s iconic duo Deschanel is down with. "A lot of people make fun of the Carpenters. I love the Carpenters and think they're amazing," she says. "Karen Carpenter has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I like a lot of that sort of '70s soft music."

With hundreds of unemployed carpenters and 25% unemployment in the building trades in San Francisco carpenters and building trades workers are facing a crisis.
