The legendary South Nahanni River, also called Naha Dehé by the Deh Cho People, is the heart of Nahanni National Park Reserve of Canada. It is a World Heritage Site, a Canadian Heritage River, a fragile and magnificent boreal wilderness, home to the Dehcho First Nations and a sacred place of Dene legends and spirituality. Previously, only 1/7th of the Greater Nahanni Ecosystem was protected, but now it has been expanded from 4,800 km2 to more than 30,000 km2. Nahanni National Park Reserve will now protect 91% of the ecosystem including the length of the South Nahanni River in the Dehcho, the highest mountains and largest glaciers in the Northwest Territories, habitat for about 500 grizzly bears, two herds of woodland caribou, Dall's sheep and mountain goats, the entire Nahanni North karst area, globally unique caves, canyons, poljes and sinkholes. A place like no other on Earth, Nahanni is Canada's gift to future generations.
