Turkey - From Istanbul s otogar (that s bus station to English speakers), I boarded an overnight coach, arriving in Cappadocia at the crack of dawn. in the town of G reme. People have been carving homes into the rocks of this surreal landscape for ages. And what did I do after a night on a bus without sleep, but go hiking for hours. I walked the Rose Valley to avusin, catching a dolmus back. The next day, I tramped the Pigeon Valley (devoid of pigeons) to the castle-like U hsar. A busy day next. A plunge into the depths of Derinkuyu, the underground city, which once housed thousands. Then a stroll through the Ilhara Gorge, with monasteries carved into the cliff sides. Finally, ascending the heights of Selime Monastery. Back to another otogar to depart as I arrived. On another overnight coach. The musical accompaniment is Menouthis by E. S. Posthumus and Pompeii also by E. S. Posthumus.

In October 2008, Pop!Tech’s annual conference in Maine (www.poptech.org) featured this remarkable performance by cellist Rufus Cappadocia. Cappadocia bows and plucks his cello with theatrical intensity and dignified ease. Graciously playing the quarter-tone lute, Cappadocia’s music partner, Bethany Yarrow, accompanies him for the final piece of this event. Keep up with Bethany Rufus at www.bethanyandrufus.com

Excerpt from Peter, Bethany other songs, giving it a faster, dance-tinged vibe. It s an interesting retelling of the age-old Samson and Delilah story, bringing personal choice into the saga. The beat of the song speeds up to effectively match and emphasize the pace of the story. culminating in grooving drum solos, interspersed with Bethany s smooth voice." - MusicDishTV

Drive Thru History :: Ancient Asia Minor

from peresprojects on March 25, 2008

In this series, East Meets West, your host Dave Stotts explores an unusual and mystical region known as Cappadocia. Here Dave explores underground cities that stretched under vast areas. Inhabited first by the ancient Hittites, they were later occupied by early Christians who feared persecution by Romans and later by Muslims. Dave is then off to Istanbul, once called Constantinople and once called Byzantium. Dave explores the Hagia Sophia (meaning "Holy wisdom"). Learn about Constantine-the Roman Emperor who stopped the persecution of Christians and legalized open religious expression though the Edict of Milan. Dave examines the Nicene Creed. Lastly The final episode is a retrospective "best of" tour through the ancient roots of Western Civilization, and we end our tour in Washington DC where we start connecting some of the dots between ancient history and the "American experiment" in Western Civilization. Visit Drive Thru History's Website. MySpace Page. For more information on this series.
