I recently spent a month embedded with the US Army 10th Mountain Division in Logar Province, Afghanistan. This video is a preview of a story on how winning the hearts and minds of the Afghans is central to US military counter-insurgency strategy, yet operations resulting in civilian casualties is creating immense hostility among Afghans and pushing them toward the insurgency. The 10th Mountain Division are the first reinforcements this year, followed by an additional 20,000 US troops that will deploy to break a military stalemate reached with the Taliban. The summer fighting is expected to be the heaviest since the war began. With troops spread thin, air-strikes have been relied upon heavily. Civilian casualties have mounted, with over 2000 last year, a 40% increase over the year before. The Afghan government reported that on May 4th, 140 civilians were killed in US air strikes in the village of Granai.
