E15: Field Dress
from popular posts - blip.tv (beta) February 08, 2008
Warning, this episode has profanity and graphic video of deer guts.Jean-Luc Godard said "all you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun." This TechTrek will use a New York City night club and a knife. Last Thanksgiving I was intensely reminded of why the knife is one of the most important technological inventions to date. And that I really don't know how to use one to feed myself. It all started in a club in New York City on a Friday. A good start to any story. See, it was a kinda lame "bridge and tunnel" crowd as we Manhattan snobs say, but interesting at times. My mission was to help a friend with a puppet light show, and then things got a little crazy as they sometimes do. Anyway, one thing led to another and the next morning I found myself heading for a cabin in West Virgina with a couple of friends. And the morning after that a neighbor with a bad back stopped by and asked us for help with a freshly killed 8 point buck. When you kill a deer you need to take out all the guts so the bad juices from its digestion tracks don't ruin the meat. Field dressing also makes it much easier to haul it out of the woods. As a kid I hunted, but I never got a deer. And I loved knives. My favorite were Buck knives. But it wasn't until this moment that I truly realized why they are called Buck knives, it's because use them on Bucks! The knive's smooth exterior and blade is specifically made to field dress a deer and easily clean up.This was a little gross, but who knows when you will need to know how to use a knife to feed yourself??? (Disclaimer: This was a legal kill of a 100% organic deer. All parts of the it were used and recycled, with 0-transfats. A low carbon footprint was maintained throughout the process.)

E14: TechDIY for Mother and Daughter
from TechTrek.Tv October 31, 2007
TechDIY helps mothers teach their daughthers about electronics. Ji Sun Lee made Tech DIY as her theis project at ITP. Her young daughter is back in Korea with her husband while she is finishing up her studies in NYC. Her daughter and her experience in New York at ITP inspired her to make a set of Do It Yourself (DIY) projects that mothers can do with their daugthers to teach them about electronics in fun and positive ways. As Ji Sun told TechTrek "like many other women, I was not initially interested in learning about electronics. However, I knew the enjoyment of making things. So I developed the Tech DIY to encourage women to learn about technology with their daughters in ways that are simple and fun, but have solid engineering lessons behind them."

E13: Unconnected
from TechTrek.Tv September 27, 2007
On this TechTrek we go in search of an person in New York City who is unconnected to technology. No cell phone, no Web, no computer. 9 Min. When the Web goes down, or our phones die we feel isolated, unconnected. This may be good for a vacation, but it's increasingly a bad feeling in our normal day to day developed world, eespecially here in New York City where cell phones are like wrist watches in the 1950s, everyone has one, it's just what style and brand you like. But there is a world around us that we can connect to without technology and we did for the last few million years. It's pretty much the world in your field of view, one could call it "physical reality."Are there people in my field of view who live in this unconnected alter universe all the time? What is it like to not have a cell phone or Web access? Do they have a social network? How do they communicate? What do they think of us as we walk around talking on our phones? Lets find out.
