Hi-De-Ho Man!

Hi-De-Ho Man!

from The Palomar on June 13, 2009

Several months ago I reviewed Duke Ellington’s “Symphony in Black” (1937) a classical piece of Jazz Americana and recipient of the first Academy Award awarded to a black entertainer. Duke, however, was not the only black musician that was involved with film during this era. Hi-De-Ho Man Cab Calloway and His Orchestra His contemporary and big band leader Cabell "Cab" Calloway III, a master of the energetic style of scat singing that Calloway learned from Louis Armstrong, also had a hand in making some great films. His band featured solo performers and great sidemen, including trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Adolphus "Doc" Cheatham, saxophonists Ben Webster and Leon "Chu" Berry, New Orleans guitar ace Danny Barker, and bassist Milt Hinton. Cab was born in a middle-class family in Rochester, New York, on Christmas Day 1907. He lived there until 1918, when his parents moved their family to Baltimore. They recognized their son's musical talent. He began private voice lessons in 1922. Despite his parents' and vocal teachers' disapproval of jazz, Calloway began frequenting and eventually performing in many of Baltimore's jazz clubs, where he was mentored by drummer Chick Webb and pianist Johnny Jones. By the end of the 1920’s, Cab’s main interest was in singing and entertaining, and he spent most of his nights at the Dreamland Ballroom, the Club Berlin and the Sunset Cafe, performing as a drummer, singer and emcee. It was at the Sunset Cafe that he met and performed with Louis Armstrong who taught him to sing in the "scat" style. By the 1930's, New York City’s “The Cotton Club”, was the hottest jazz venue in the country. Cab Calloway and his Orchestra were hired as a replacement for the Duke Ellington and His Orchestra while they were touring. Calloway quickly proved so popular that he too was soon touring when not at the Cotton Club. Their popularity was greatly enhanced by the twice-weekly live NBC national radio broadcasts at the Cotton Club. In 1931, he recorded his most famous song, "Minnie the Moocher". That song, "St. James Infirmary Blues," and "The Old Man Of The Mountain" were performed for the Betty Boop animated shorts. He took advantage of this and timed his concerts in some communities with the release of the films in order to make the most of the attention. Here is that Betty Boop animated short film, “Minnie the Moocher” As a result of the success of "Minnie the Moocher," Cab became identified with its chorus, gaining the nickname "The Hi De Ho Man". In 1934, Paramount produced the following ten-minute short film called “Hi-De-Ho.” Cab Calloway's Hi-De-Ho is a ten-minute Paramount musical short from 1934. The short story involves jive-master jazz performer Cab Calloway as he travels by train on his way to the Cotton Club. Features performances with his full orchestra, including the famous call-and-response song of the title During the 1930s both Calloway and Ellington were featured on film more than any other jazz orchestra of the era. In 1933, Cab’s classic song about marijuana, "Reefer Man," was featured in another Paramount film. Calloway helped establish the Cab Calloway Museum at Coppin State College in Baltimore in the 1980's. Bill Cosby helped establish a scholarship in Calloway's name at the New School of Social Research New York City. In 1994, a creative and performing arts school, the Cab Calloway School of the Arts, was dedicated in his name in Wilmington, Delaware. Cab the consummate entertainer continued to perform right up until May 1994 when he suffered a stroke. He died six months later on November 18, 1994. He was 86. Hope you enjoyed the Hi-De-Ho Man! Guy Lombardo cuts first sides in Richmond Indiana beginning a 50 year career. These recordings reveal the group's early jazz roots. Their sound differed little from that of other white bands of the era, however, and the recordings sold poorly. They soon realized that changes were needed if the orchestra was going to survive. They began to develop their own brand of sweet music, focusing on melody over improvisation. Brother Carmen also helped create a distinct saxophone sound which gave them instant listener recognition and helped set them apart from all the other bands.Mar 11 Jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, bandleader and son of the Duke, Mercer Ellington was born in Washington, D.C. 1919. By the age of eighteen he had written his first piece to be recorded by his father (Pigeons and Peppers). In 1939, 1946–1949, and 1959 he led his own bands, many of whose members went on to play with his father, or to achieve independent fame (notably Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Dorham, Idrees Sulieman, Chico Hamilton, Charles Mingus, and Carmen McRae). During the 1940s in particular he wrote pieces that became standards, including Things Ain't What They Used to Be, Jumpin' Punkins, Moon Mist, and Blue Serge. He composed for his father from 1940 to 1941, worked as road manager for Cootie Williams' orchestra (1941 to 1943 and again in 1954), and returned to work for his father playing E-flat horn in 1950 He was the Duke's general manager and copyist from 1955 to 1959. In 1960, Mercer became Della Reese's musical director, then in 1962 went on take a job as a radio DJ in New York for three years. In 1965 he again returned to his father's orchestra, this time as trumpeter and road manager. When his father died in 1974, Ellington took over the orchestra, taking it on tour to Europe in 1975 and 1977 (his own son, Edward Ellington, played in the band in the late 1970s, and his other son, Paul Ellington, took it over at a later date). In the early 1980s he became the first conductor for a Broadway musical of his father's music, Sophisticated Ladies.Trumpeter Frankie Newton, 48 dies in NYC, 1954. Newton, whose mellow and thoughtful style sometimes seemed somewhat out of place in the swing era, had a relatively brief but artistically rewarding career. He had stints with Lloyd Scott (1927-1929), Cecil Scott (1929-1930), Chick Webb, Elmer Snowden, Charlie Johnson, and Sam Wooding, and appeared on Bessie Smith's final recording session in 1933. Newton worked with Charlie Barnet's short-lived integrated band in 1936, and with Teddy Hill, before briefly becoming closely associated with bassist John Kirby and his associates. Newton also played for Mezz Mezzrow and Lucky Millinder, led a few record dates (including participating in a set for Hugues Panassie), and worked at Cafe Society, accompanying Billie Holiday on several of her records (most notably Strange Fruit). Hudson-Delange band cuts Sophisticated Swing, 1937.Mar 12 The Bird, 34, dies in NYC, 1955. Charlie Parker's big band experience started in 1938, when Parker joined pianist Jay McShann's territory band. Parker made his professional recording debut with McShann's band. In 1942 Parker left McShann's band and played with Earl Hines for one year. Also in the band was trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie, which is where the soon to be famous duo met for the first time. One of Parker's longstanding desires was to perform with a string section as he was a keen student of classical music. Contemporaries reported that he was most interested in the music and formal innovations of Igor Stravinsky, and longed to engage in a project akin to what later became known as "Third Stream Music;" a new kind of music, incorporating both jazz and classical elements as opposed to merely incorporating a string section into performance of jazz standards. On November 30, 1949, Norman Granz arranged for Parker to record an album of ballads with a mixed group of jazz and chamber orchestra musicians. The players were Parker on alto saxophone; Mitch Miller on oboe and English horn; Bronislav Gimpel, Max Hollander, and Milton Lamask on violin; Frank Brieff on viola; Frank Miller on cello; Meyer Rosen on harp; Stan Freeman on piano; Ray Brown on bass; Buddy Rich on drums; and Jimmy Carroll as arranger and conductor. Six master takes from this session comprised the album Bird With Strings: Just Friends, Everything Happens to Me, April in Paris, Summertime, I Didn't Know What Time It Was, and If I Should Lose You. Parker's last gig was played at Birdland on March 5, 1955.Mar 13 Goodman Sextet cuts Air Mail Special, 1941.Cornetist Jimmy McPartland, 83, dies at Port Washington, NY, 1991. In 1924, at age 17, McPartland was called to New York to take Bix Beiderbecke's place in the Wolverine Orchestra. Bix quietly sat in the back of the club during the audition, later revealing himself with the compliment, "I like ya, kid. Ya sound like me, but you don't copy me." They became friends and roomed together while Bix gave McPartland pointers. At that time, Bix picked out a cornet for McPartland that he then played throughout his career. From 1926 to 1927, he worked with Art Kassel. Also in 1927, he was a part of the historic McKenzie-Condon's Chicagoans recording session that produced China Boy and Nobody's Sweetheart. Finally, in 1927 he joined Ben Pollack's band for 2 years, and was one of the main soloists (along with Benny Goodman, Bud Freeman, Jack Teagarden and Glenn Miller). He co-wrote the song Makin' Friends with Jack Teagarden. McPartland worked with Russ Columbo (1931-1932) and the Harry Reser band (1933-1935). During this period, he married singer Dorothy Williams, who along with her sister Hannah (who later married boxer Jack Dempsey), performed as "The Williams Sisters", and they had a daughter, Dorothy. They soon divorced and McPartland spent time in South America. From 1936-1941, McPartland led his own bands and joined Jack Teagarden's Big Band until he was drafted in the Army during World War II (1942-1944). Norm Gluckman Cedarville, New Jersey Email Me

2- O Império Contra Ataca (The Empire Strikes Back, Irvin Kershner) Nuuuuuussa a Princesa Leia ama o Han Solo e ele sabe disso. Nuuuuussa O Darth Vader é pai do Luke. 5- Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (Les Blank)Ele come, oras.
