He s a traffic and travel reporter on the Johnny Vaughan Breakfast show on Capital Radio in London, however, once he s off-air he swaps the headphones for the floppy leather hat and overalls of sheep farmer. He starts the day helping commuters battle with the congested arteries of London and ends it aiding a lamb trapped in a complicated birth. Hugh s surroundings amongst the animals at home may be serene, but his hectic existence has his family worried.

 From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
All-Composite Speedster Equipped With 'Chute Recently, Gobosh Aviation unveiled a new addition to their product line, the all-composite 800XP. Sporting rakish lines similar to several other low-wing LSAs -- more on that in a minute -- the 800XP is a Czech-designed-and-built aircraft, unlike the Polish-built G700S that kicked off Gobosh's presence in the US last July. The aircraft boasts a "structural composite" design, reducing the need for underlying metal frame supports. Gobosh adds performance also benefits from a high-performance laminar-flow wing, designed specifically for the US marketplace. The 800XP was designed by brothers Mirek & Petr Kabrt, brothers who are also responsible for the design of several other Czech-sourced LSA in the US, including the TL-2000 Sting Sport. So it's no surprise to see the 800XP carries echoes of several other LSA. The 800XP also carries forth Gobosh's nomenclature system, with "XP" signifying a glass-cockpit-equipped aircraft, equipped with the GO-SAFE (Gobosh-Strategic Alternative For Emergencies) ballistic parachute system, sourced from Galaxy. (Of course, Gobosh likely wouldn't mind a bit if the plane's designation brings to mind the "other" 800XP in aviation, the one that carries the Hawker name.) A Dynon EFIS-D100 glass-panel system, sporting Garmin ancillary hardware, rounds out the avionics package. Initially, Gobosh will offer the 800XP in Elite and Elite+ configurations. Even standard Elite-equipped planes will sport Day or Night IFR capabilities (remember, sport pilot allows only Day-VFR operation) while the Elite+ planes will add to Gobosh's "luxury"-sport aircraft advertising tagline with standard leather seats, Garmin GPS-396 with XM/WX capabilities, and Bose headset jacks. Like the G700S, all 800XPs will be backed by a two-year, 400-hour warranty. Powered by the ubiquitious Rotax 912ULS, the 800XP should offer cruising speeds close to the 120-knot upper limit for LSA. Gobosh notes the basis for the 800XP, the retractable-gear VL-3, holds the European speed record for Rotax-equipped microlights. Base prices for the 800XP are $123,700 for the Elite, and $129,990 for the Elite+. Both prices are spot-inline with similarly-equipped G700S models, meaning Gobosh customers have a choice between all-metal or all-composite airframes for roughly the same money. The company does note the G700S, with its classic "six pack" of analog instruments and sturdy landing gear, is probably better suited for the training market, while the 800XP caters towards experienced private flyers. From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
Bunce Takes On FAA... Reiterates FAA Funding Shouldn't Be Tied To User Fees During its Annual Industry Review and Market Outlook Briefing a few days back, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) identified several dynamic challenges that must be managed in order for the robust growth in general aviation to continue. Pete Bunce, GAMA s highly motivated president and CEO, stated the fundamental debate in the US over how the FAA should be funded was settled when the Administration s proposal to introduce broad-based user fees for aviation was rejected by Congress last year... contrary to recent attempts by the Bush administration to bring the issue back around, and current deliberations underway in the Senate. "GAMA continues to oppose the introduction of user fees on any segment of aviation," said Bunce. "The priority now is to ensure that the nation embarks on a decisive path to modernize our air traffic control system to accommodate future growth and address airline congestion. "Achieving the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) objectives goes well beyond simply reducing congestion and air traffic delays," said Bunce. "It will bring tangible environmental benefits as well." Bunce demonstrated how NextGen and Europe s Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (SESAR) initiative incorporate technologies and capabilities that will lead to more efficient aircraft operation and reduced impact on the environment. "There is no more critical time for the aviation industry to come together to accelerate modernization and shape the aerospace priorities of the next US Administration and European Union," Bunce concluded. From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
Let's Take a Good Long Look At An Exciting LSA offering... From An Industry Heavyweight With industry heavyweights Cirrus Design and Cessna Aircraft now firmly committed to the LSA market, the future for the entry level of aviation appears to be a bit more "sure" than it has been in many a moon. Our series on the Cirrus Design SRS took a long look at that exciting entry, but now it's time to take an equally thorough look at Cessna's SkyCatcher program... as well as its controversial decision to do some major assembly work in China. ANN's Aero-TV crews have been following this program since its inception and have put together an extensive look at the SkyCatcher, its cockpit, the market, future training issues and (of course), the China decision. In Part One, Aero-TV brings you to the initial announcements that took the wraps off the Continental O-200D powered SkyCatcher... right from the grounds of Oshkosh 2007. Part Two covers the amazing new cockpit offered for this aircraft... a brand new Garmin glass-panel system, with details provided by none other than Garmin's Gary Kelley. In Part Three, Aero-TV chats up some of the industry's experts as to the portent implied by Cessna's aggressive entry into the LSA market... with comments from John and Martha King, EAA Prez Tom Poberezny... and the guy who "gets to take the blame, Cessna CEO Jack Pelton. Finally, we have a recent interview that takes a look at Cessna's decisions in regards to their announcement that the will put a fair amount of assembly of this little bird in China... an interview that took place entirely inside the SkyCatcher's surprisingly roomy cabin. And, before we forget... stick around for Friday's programming -- in which Teledyne-Continental's irrepressible Mac Little talks about the new and surprisingly lighter Continental O-200D... an engine that's getting ready to make aviation history -- again.
From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
While Cessna's C-162 SkyCatcher was first shown to the public as a Rotax powered vehicle, the ultimate powerplant selection by Cessna dictated that the front end be filled by a powerplant well-known to Cessna flyers the world over -- the Teledyne Continental O-200... and not just any O-200, but a new variant, this one lighter and updated to current needs, called the O-200D. The Proof-Of-Concept bird first flew with a 100-hp Continental O-200 engine on Aug. 17, 2007, just a few days aftwer the final configuration was unveiled to the world on the grounds of Oshkosh 2007. Cessna explained that the TCM O-200D was selected due to perceived "advantages in operations, warranty and maintenance." The Teledyne Continental Motors O-200D is an aircooled, horizontally opposed, four cylinder, naturally aspirated, spark ignited, four stroke, direct drive engine incorporating a wet sump, updraft intake, carburetor, and down draft tuned exhaust system. The engine is designed with the capability to operate on 100LL aviation fuel, has been lightened by some 25 pounds over previous iterations, and has a maximum continuous rating of 100 hp at 2800 RPM with a compression ratio of 8.5:1. The time between overhaul is 2000 hours or 12 years, whichever occurs first. Expected fuel efficiency will enable the SkyCatcher to achieve an average fuel consumption of less than six gallons per hour. The Cessna installation will drive a two-bladed fixed-pitch composite propeller. FMI: http://www.tcmlink.com Copyright 2008, Aero-News Network, Inc., ALL Rights Reserved.

2007 Was Another Record Year (Thankfully) For GA Manufacturers Just this past week, leaders of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) announced that the 2007 year-end shipment figures for the general aviation industry have led to another record high in industry billings. Speaking at GAMA s Annual Industry Review and Market Outlook Briefing, GAMA Chairman and Chairman and CEO of Cirrus Design Corporation, Alan Klapmeier, reported that a strong worldwide market, especially outside of North America, was a driving factor for general aviation in 2007. As these economies continue to expand, we expect general aviation to play an ever increasing role in these regions. Klapmeier added, Manufacturer backlogs are strong and we think this bodes well for 2008 and the years beyond. Record industry billings totaled $21.9 billion, eclipsing last years figure by 16.5 percent. Year-end, worldwide shipments of general aviation airplanes totaled 4,272 units, the most in more than a quarter century and up 5.4 percent over the previous year's total of 4,053 units. Aside from the record set for year-end billings, the industry also experienced an all-time high in business jet shipments, delivering over one thousand units for the first time in history. The piston airplane segment was down 2.9 percent in 2007, but still posted the second best year in over two decades. Total units decreased from 2,755 in 2006 to 2,675 in 2007. Shipments of turboprops increased 11.4 percent, up from 412 units in 2006 to 459 units in 2007. Business jet shipments reached an all-time high of 1,138 units, up 28.4 percent over last year s figure of 886 airplanes.
