Keep Your Gigs Moving Rich Palmer writes in with a question, How do you keep your band s set moving. It seems like bands lose their momentum in between songs. It takes too much time in between songs, and it brings the set to a halt. How do you stop this? Dave says: First of you need to identify the problem so record a gig, and when you listen back get a watch with a second hand. You will be amazed. While a minute doesn t sound like a long time, it s VERY long time if you are sitting there waiting for the band to start playing another song. My favorite is when a band asks the audience to get up and dance. When they finally do they take time after that song to thank them. Consequently, as the crowd waits for another song to dance to, the band looks at each other to see what song they are playing next. Finally the crowd gets bored and returns to their seats. At this point, the band goes Hey why aren t you dancing? When the crowd gets up, keep them up by having a set list with the song listed. A well planned set list is key. Make sure songs in the same key are not played back to back to back. Put dances songs next to dance songs. Time your sets, and make sure the bottom of the hour (when many people leave) has a great song that makes them want to stay. In some cases you may need to call and audible on stage and say to skip the slow song and stick with the dance songs. Why is it important to keep the crowd dancing? Bar Owners love thirsty customers, and dancing customers are thirsty customers. The bottom line is you have to come up with hand signals, or some sort of way to communicate on stage in an effective manner so you can stick to the plan, or change on the fly in a minutes notice.
