Heather is going into the studio THIS weekend and Dave helps her find the "small ingredients" that make a HUGE difference on the final vocal take. Like a good recipe, sometimes it's the smallest pinch of seemingly unimportant ingredient that turns an ordinary dish into a sensational delicacy. Like a chef, a good singer needs to know what these elements are in an UNFORGETTABLE vocal track. Being a studio singer in Nashville for many years, Dave shows us these vocal style tricks of the pros as we watch the lesson unfold. A true gem in the flood of vocal technique videos, this is where the ACTUAL SINGING takes place! Michael Holmes conducts Brooks "Phantasmagoria"
from YouTube :: Tag // virginia July 18, 2008
Kris Brooks - Phantasmagoria (Excerpt) Vidin Philharmonia, Bulgaria Michael Holmes, conductor About the composer: Kris Brooks enjoys composing modern music, forging ahead into the musical unknown. But he equally enjoys writing imaginary compositions from the past. For example, his Fantasia & Fugue for violin and keyboard is a piece that an experimental Bach could have written in 1765, had he lived another fifteen years. Likewise, "Nostalgic Reflections" (1st mvt. of his Symphony No. 1) is an orchestral work Brooks himself might have composed had he been one of the Jugendstil generation in Vienna around 1908 to 1912. Of course, historical accuracy in a musical sense is not the goal. Rather, each scenario serves as a catalyst to the compositional process. When it comes to his truly modern music, Brooks feels more associated with certain compositional techniques of Lutoslawski & Penderecki, or Crumb & Corigliano, though his own personal voice - a voice borne out of an innate connection to the music of Bach and Mahler - is quite evident. But whether it's a foot in the past or a foot in the present, each of Kris Brooks' compositions reveals a highly defined musical vision set within a distinctive sound world, and with a communicative depth that profoundly affects the listener. Brooks' compositions range from solo pieces to works for full orchestra, with performances in the U.S. and abroad. The Richmond Symphony Orchestra Woodwind Quintet(VA) included A Dialogue, his duet for oboe & bassoon, in their 1993 tour. His European debut came in 1995 with the première of Concepts in Contrast (Concerto for 12 Cellos, 3 Double Basses, and Percussion). Cellissimo, made up of musicians from the Hochschule für Musik Köln and the Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester, gave the première in Aachen, Germany. Devil's Fate, a piece for full orchestra, was premièred by the Contemporary Youth Orchestra (Cleveland) in 1997. Mr. Brooks already has fulfilled numerous commissions in his career. In 1998, he completed Phantasmagoria for full orchestra, made possible by a commission from the Suburban Youth Orchestra (Chicago), though Vidin Philharmonic (Bulgaria) actually gave the world première in the Spring of 2004. Nostalgic Reflections, a neo-Romantic work for orchestra, was premièred by the Filharmonia Sudecka (Poland) in 2000. He served as composer-in-residence with the Richmond Philharmonic in Virginia during the 2001/2002 season. Currently, Brooks is at work on his First Symphony. After studying composition under John Hilliard at James Madison University, Kris studied with Ladislav Kubik at Florida State University. In addition, he has also participated in masterclasses with James Mobberly, William Kraft, Joan Tower, Ellen Zwillich, and Stephen Paulus, among others. Mr. Brooks enjoys the outdoors and wildlife, as well as independent pursuits in music, art, architecture, photography, literature, and Virginia history. About Michael Holmes: Michael Holmes's career has encompassed a wide spectrum of musical pursuits, including the fields of historical performance, symphonic conducting, composing/arranging, and scholarly research. He serves as music director of the Orchestra of the 17th Century in Washington D.C., artistic director of the Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble (one of the USA's premiere period brass ensembles), and director of the University of Maryland Collegium Musicum. He has also performed on an array of period instruments with ensembles such as Stylus Luxurians, the Washington Bach Consort, Opera Lafayette, and Piffaro. Michael has performed extensively as a conductor in Europe, leading symphonic, opera, and historical performances in Poland, Czech Republic, Finland, Romania, and Bulgaria. As a Fulbright Scholar, he undertook extensive research on Nordic music in Finland, specializing in the music of Sibelius, and sang on two tours with the premiere Finnish male voice choir Ylioppilaskunnan Laulajat (including one at New York's Lincoln Center), and was present during their recording of the Sibelius complete works for male voice choir on the Finlandia label. Currently, he serves as the music director at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring, MD. Help Save 1-800-SUICIDE
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) June 23, 2008
As 1-800-SUICIDE marks its tenth anniversary this year, the hot line needs your help. It was founded in 1998 by Reese Butler in memory of his wife, Kristin who had committed suicide. The Kristin Brooks Hope Center has helped almost three million callers connect to help and hope. As they enter their second decade of service to the public, continued support is needed to ensure that the confidentiality of every caller is protected. Because they are totally privately funded, they need to prove to the government that they are capable of supporting 1-800-SUICIDE to keep control of the line from being taken over by the federal government. The money you donate will not only be used to pay the phone bill that connects about 50,000 callers each month to the Hopeline Network, but will also be used to pay for training of online crisis counselors who will provide the same support via online counseling. This is where the young people of today reach out for help. The success of 1-800-SUICIDE is based on individuals in crisis knowing that any personal identifiable information is kept strictly confidential. The Hope Center s volunteer staff and Board remain committed to preserving confidential suicide prevention programs. Your action today assures their sustainability! The Kristin Brooks Hope Center and its national 1-800-SUICIDE hotline is a great asset to our society one of those private-sector initiatives called a point of light. For reasons of their own, certain officials within the government tried to snuff that light. With your help and support together we can prevent that tragedy from occurring and help the Hopeline achieve success in liberating 1-800-SUICIDE from government control permanently.

The Zombie Survival Guide Part 20
from YouTube :: Tag // second life June 22, 2008
The book is divided into seven separate chapters, plus an appendix. The first chapter is entitled Myths and Realities. It lays down the specific ground rules that are referenced repeatedly in the book. The most important of these describes "Solanum", the fictional virus that creates a zombie, along with details on how it is spread (such as through an open wound, when coming in contact with infected blood) and treatment of the infected (suicide or amputation) The second chapter, Weapons and Combat Techniques, discusses the weapons at the reader's disposal and weighs them against the various threats that may be faced during confrontations with the undead. The third chapter, On the Defensive, looks at options for an individual to stay in a stationary location. It focuses on remaining stationary in an undead siege. The fourth chapter, entitled On the Run, explores dealing with attacks while traveling. While chapters three and four emphasize avoiding zombies, chapter five, On the Attack, specifically deals with engaging ghouls to ensure their destruction. The sixth chapter, "Living in an Undead World" looks at survival during a doomsday scenario, a Class-4 outbreak would see zombies becoming the dominant species on Earth. Advice in this section is adapted from previous sections; recommendations for surviving a siege is repeated, though altered for relevancy to the long-term entrenchment a Class-4 outbreak represents. The guide concludes with a fictional list of documented zombie encounters throughout history. The oldest entry is 60,000 BC, in Katanga, Central Africa, although the author expresses doubt to its validity. Instead, he presents evidence from 3,000 BC in Hieraconpolis, Egypt as the first verifiable instance of a zombie outbreak. The most recent entry is 2002, in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The journal section also introduces a lead in to the next novel, World War Z, in describing how a group of zombies came to be in China, which is listed as the outbreak's source. The Appendix takes the form of a sample "Outbreak Journal", with the fictional author noting a covered-up zombie outbreak being seen on the local news. The following pages are blank entries, presumably for the reader to use as a basis for their own journal; their inclusion furthers the overall feel that the book is a survival guide to a life-threatening possibility.
