#134 - Silken Buttocks, Quincy Jones and Movie Adaptations.

#134 - Silken Buttocks, Quincy Jones and Movie Adaptations.

from The Paul And Spike Show Podcast on November 20, 2009
Duration: 0
00:00 After a brief schedule update - and a plug for the new PaulAndSpike.com website, it's right into the fray with all the usual gubbins, including a sore forehead. 02:24 The Internets - all of them - have been ablaze about Obama's ghastly middle east mistake. He bowed to a foreign leader, when he was supposed to have been rude and condescending. Get with the program, Barry Hussein! Spike reads out some hilarious feedback from an LA Times article about the breach of protocol. One of them includes the phrase silken buttock line - but not as a compliment. 10:52 Both of The Boys have several orders in for Sarah Palin's new book; one for the toilet, one for the Kindle, and one to hold up a shaky table leg. Some AP sharks have been doing opposition research and were shocked... SHOCKED to find that some facts were wrong. 21:44 The New Musical Express have released a list of the Top Albums Of The Decade ! See how many (if any) The Boys recognize from the top ten. (hint: at least one... but not many more.) 26:50 Car parts in the yard, a house on blocks, dogs chained up outside and the sweet, sweet smell of meth wafting gently across the trailer village as the week's news and current affairs are examined in full detail via Pickin' And Grinnin'! 30:56 This Week In Stuff , the segment of the show where The Boys share their media week, in order to help you make better reading/watching/huffing decisions. And let me tell you, this week's is HORRENDOUS!! ...no, wait. TREMENDOUS! Paul has been busy; he got to go outside before the crack of dawn to watch meteors (sorry ladies, he's taken) and bought an album - legally! REALLY! - unheard, from so-called Supergroup Them Crooked Vultures . Two more movies get crossed off the Ebert list: La Dolce Vita and Bonnie and Clyde . Ebert wasn't kind this week, sadly. 41:44 Spike's media week has been less thrilling - he watched The Execution Of Gary Glitter and had a fit of hysterics over the Michael Jackson Seance and an episode of The Steve Wilkos Show. Also - Dr Who in high definition? Believe it! ...but was it enough to turn the hardened HD unbeliever over to the sharper side? 55.35 This week sees the release of the new Twilight movie. I bet you didn't know that, did you? Honestly, someone should do some promotion for it! The Boys discuss where the scales tip between an over-saturation of Twilight and Harry Potter being annoying, and being products that are tearing today's teenagers away from their File-o-Faxes and Dreamcasts and discotheques and making them read books again. 59:53 Inspired by the 'Twilight' situation, The Boys and the Paulandspiketeers discuss the most over-rated movie adaptations and the most under-rated adaptations, in Over/Under . -------- Spread the word! Now, the best place to get hold of the show is at the new www.PaulAndSpike.com - with the most recent show, the archives and various other examples of whatnot. ------- Want to contribute to the show? You're always welcome to; email 'em at The Usual Address, or follow twitter.com/spikester and/or at facebook.com/thespikester to find out about future topics. ------- If you fancy being a guest on the worldwide radio phenomenon known as The Paul And Spike Show, get in touch via the usual address. ------- The Paul And Spike Show airs weekly, every Friday night on the mighty Radio Six International, from 11pm UK time and 6pm US eastern time. It also airs on 88.5 World FM in Wellington New Zealand on Sunday afternoons, local time. You can listen online, wherever you are in the world. #133: Sesame Scandals, Kurosawa, Death, and Big Yellow Taxi.

#133: Sesame Scandals, Kurosawa, Death, and Big Yellow Taxi.

from The Paul And Spike Show Podcast on November 13, 2009
Duration: 0
A mixed bag this week, as the show swings wildly from scandal to banjos, from life-changing movies to life-ending dramas, and from Sticky Fingers to a Big Yellow Taxi: 00:00 Paul is teetering on the edge of his eighteenth nervous breakdown, thanks to a Volkswagen-sized hole in his front yard. Spike, as always, is just plain boring. The Boys discuss reasons (and methods) of starting a heroin habit top help them cope and to pass the time. Never claim that TPASS isn't educational... 08:41 Some great stuff going on in the news; Glenn Beck loses a lawsuit but gets what he asked for, and Sesame Street is 40 years old and riddled with scandals. 31:43 What better way to cover the serious topic of international news and current affairs than to do so with banjos and puns? It's Pickin' And Grinnin', boy howdy. 34:05 This Week In Stuff, the segment where The Boys share their media week, in order to recommend/warn you and help you make better decisions. In theroy. (I think they just like talking about themselves, personally...) Paul's Ebert Movie Of The Week is Akira Kurosawa's Ikiru ; a movie that's not only entertaining, it's LIFE-CHANGING! Something that wasn't life-changing, but was terribly disturbing, was Pan's Labyrinth - not to be confused with the early 1980s David Bowie movie. ...or was that The Dark Crystal ? Plus, freebies!! Paul, as you know, is a resident blogger at Kindleville, and was sent some free e-books from Book View Cafe. Lucky dawg. 53:45 Spike's media week is part remake, part forward-looking: he took in the recent rehashing of The Taking Of Pelham 123 (cue jokes about how he had never seen the first hundred and twenty four of them...) with the express (no pun, etc) intention of making fun of it on the show, but finds a whole different outcome. He is very much looking forward to watching two awesome pieces of television. A live seance by so-called medium Derek Acorah to try and contact Michael Jackson, and a what if? drama set in a fictional Britain where the death penalty has been re-introduced. Its first victim... Gary Glitter. 1:10:42 Following on from a conversation The Boys had a few weeks ago, the topic for discussion is albums. Have ipods and CD changers messed up the artform of the LP? Is the hard work the artist and producer do sculpting the perfect running order gone forever thanks to the shuffle culture? They talk about the last albums that they listened to end-to-end. Paul fell in love with the Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers , and Spike found a new appreciation for Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left . What's the last album you listened to end to end? Let 'em know at The Usual Address. Furthermore, the fact that frthey paved paradise, put up a parking lot. With a big hotel, a boutique and a swiiiiinngin' hot spooootrd to ignore. Right? Yeah, you bet. ------- Want to contribute to the show? #132 - £4m, Dwarves, Rape? and Obama's First Year

from The Paul And Spike Show Podcast on November 06, 2009
Duration: 0
00:00 When is this douche ever going to get the show's web addresses right? 02:34 Whoa, has Spike won the lottery? Maybe he has, but a couple in England scooped a very nice chunk of change, but refuse to move out of their government subsidised council house. Should they? Furthermore, what sort of lottery winners would The Boys be? Bugger it all or It ain't gonna change me, mate ? 14:14 The judge who refused to marry the mixed race couple has resigned, but claims no blame. They got married anyway, should he have quit his job over it all? 17:19 Why are The Boys smarter than the average bear? The Boys discuss a recent study that suggests curmudgeons out live smiley folks. 19:00 Pickin' And Grinnin', where the week's current affairs are dissected over a tall glass of country music. 21:00 After a brief alco-check, it's on to This Week In Stuff where The Boys discuss their media week, in order to help you make better viewing/reading/playing decisions. Paul has finally seen the early 70s creeptastic Nigel Kneale classic The Stone Tape . Tropical! In between bouts of Mario And Sonic At The Winter Olympics on the DS, he's dropping spoilers of The Wire's season four all over the place, and having a daddy daughter bonding moment over Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on Blue Ray. Or is it Dwarves ? Get ready for a gear crunch, as he goes from Snow White to Drag Me To Hell . Hopefully his daughter was out of the room by the time that one started.... 38:15 What a suspiciously porn-centric week Spike's been having. He wants to put filth into Google Wave, and was thoroughly creeped out by Dan Savage's podcast, where a feminist caller had trouble dealing with wanting to be... well... raped. By a rapist. Not really a rapist, but Spike's convinced she's playing with kinky fire. In another crunching gear change, Spike has discovered a personal Holy Grail; a genuinely funny comedy show for kids. It's the BBC's Sorry, I've Got No Head , an adult-written and performed hybrid of The Fast Show and Little Britain . Add in a few lazy, so-called ironic racial epithets, and it would be an adult comedy show! 48:45 It's been a year since America did the unexpected, and elected a non-white man as President. The Boys (both Obama supporters a year ago) discuss whether O's first year has been a success or a disappointment, and whether their initial enthusiasm was unfounded. #131 - Halloween Special, with Two Men And A Ghost

#131 - Halloween Special, with Two Men And A Ghost

from The Paul And Spike Show Podcast on October 30, 2009
Duration: 0
In this Halloween spectacular (yes, I avoided saying spooktacular on purpose) The Boys are joined by Two Men And A Ghost. The Two Men in question, Mike Kazybrid and Andrew Wooding have been working in comics for over 30 years and have written and drawn characters such as Spider-Man, Desperate Dan, Transformers, Bananaman, The Bash Street Kids, The Tick, Count Duckula, Do-Do Man, Savage Sidney, Shaun the Sheep, and many, many more. Recently, they've turned their talents to the supernatural, and are searching Sheffield for the truth about local ghostly legends... that's if they remember their flashlights, of course. 00:00 Good LORD above, does the technical torment never stop with these two? More computer issues? It might be the ghosts that are messing with the Paul And Spike Show equipment, or - Occam's razor - it might be operator error. 05:41 Neither of The Boys are going to go and see This Is It! , the Michael Jackson movie (ee-hee! oohhh!), but Rush Limbaugh gets fished in by a thesis that turned out to not have been written by Barack Obama, and refuses to deny it's hoaxeyness, so there's that to talk about in a slow news week. 14:45 Wait, did we say slow news week ? Not bloody likely - there's plenty to talk about, via the gift of banjos, mandolins and crystal meth, in Pickin' And Grinnin'! . 17:06 You know that This Week In Stuff is the segment of the show where The Boys disclose their media week in order to help you make better TV/movie/literature decisions, right? Well! This week, it's Celebrity This Week In Stuff as the British comic industry's finest artist slash writer combo Andrew Wooding and Mike Kazybrid join The Boys. Andrew's looking to the future and has Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus and the new season of The Sarah Jane Adventures to see. Marvel artist Mike's had a rip-rolling time with the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie, and has a very interesting story about how an ex-Time Bandit almost became his uncle... Poor Mrs Higginbotham; she's being driven crazy thanks to Paul's re-discovery of Fleetwood Mac, and he has crossed another Ebert movie off the list; Gates Of Heaven - a documentary about pet cemeteries. Yes, you read that right. As for Spike, another week listening to South African talk station Talk Radio 702 has provided him with the greatest piece of radio I have ever heard in my life . His South African accent's not gotten any better, though. 41:36 Some listener mail poses interesting discussion points: does Morrissey have a dark appetite for tofu ? Can The Wizard Of Oz get any more garish? Does The Nightmare Before Christmas count as a Halloween movie, or a Christmas movie? Or both? Has Andrew's Mom ever been proposed to by Sneezy? And how does one put a record turntable into shuffle mode? 46:37 You simply won't believe what the Two Men And A Ghost have found roaming around Sheffield after midnight. Between shining lights into private residences, muddy trousers and police helicopters, it's only a matter of time before they end up in jail. 57:00 What are ghosts? Are they the wandering souls of dead people, are they hidden recordings, or are they hallucinations conjured up by electrical energy? The Two Men and The Boys discuss their beliefs, but what do you think? Let them know at The Usual Address. 1:11:10 It being Halloween and all, The Boys and The Men discuss their picks for best movie or TV show to get someone in the mood for the spooky holiday. #130 - Balloon Boy(tm), Katherine Hepburn, Fox News and Jan Moir

#130 - Balloon Boy(tm), Katherine Hepburn, Fox News and Jan Moir

from The Paul And Spike Show Podcast on October 23, 2009
Duration: 0
What a show this week. If it's not balloons, it's people whose heads are like them. 00:00 What a way to start the show! Clean gutters and a clean Linux install! What could possibly go wrong? 07:29 Come on, now. I know you're sick of the Balloon Boyâ coverage, but wait. Paul's words of wisdom regarding media coverage is based on - wait for it - baseball coverage. Really. Oh, and also - a fleeting appearance by Paul's daughter. Aww!! 20:20 The week's news didn't all revolve around Balloon Boyâ (although it sure as hell felt like it), so The Boys discuss the current affairs of this past seven days via the magic of the banjo, in Pickin' And Grinnin'. 22:00 Drink check! What are you drinking as you enjoy the show? Or tolerate the show? Let 'em know at The Usual Address. 24:24 This Week In Stuff; the segment of the show where The Boys talk about their media week, so that you know what to avoid or embrace. Paul's been watching an under-rated John Carpenter movie, and the picturesque, if scant, Days Of Heaven. Cue Katherine Hepburn impressions. Don't ask. On the Blue-Ray, Patton ! HD, you magnificent bastard. Spike's watched a more traditional JFK doco, is still loving the ABC's podcasts and has become attached to Talk Radio 702 out of South Africa. If you ask me, he needs to listen more so his South African accent sounds less like a Pakistani/Welsh/Icelandic hybrid, boyo. Listen to Talk Radio 702 live here. Paul's had a great idea for a future show; is the art of the album lost? We listen to music on shuffle mode now, you listen to the gui-tar on the mp3 (look at them yo-yos, that's the way ya do it) and on CDs instead of experiencing the album as a whole, track by track...? Email your thoughts to The Usual Address, and we'll talk about it in depth in a future show. 41:16 In the past week, the Whitehouse has made it clear that - by policy - the Fox News Channel is not to be recognised as a bona fide news organisation but, instead, an ideology channel. In the UK, Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir's article about a former boyband member who was found dead aged 33 spurned controversy over her thinly veiled homophobia regarding his death. The Boys talk about whether the media has a right to be controversial and say incendiary things. Thoughts? Disagreements? Agreements? Jot 'em down in an email to the usual address. ------- Want to contribute to the show? #127 - No news, patrick Swayze/Benny Hill, and what you miss about the 90s.

from The Paul And Spike Show Podcast on September 25, 2009
Duration: 0
A very retrospective show this week. See if you can count the number of times the phrase we've spoken about this before is used. We don't, however, recommend you make a drinking game out of it. Alcohol poisoning isn't fun. 00:00 A little housekeeping and a parodical intrusion from Auntie, and we're away... 04:10 Aaaaaaand they're off. A charming (read: dull) anecdote about The Boys' halcyon days in old fashioned radio and how they filled a no-news day. 09:10 A touching tribute to room temperature actor Patrick Swayze. What better way to remember the man's vast cinematic resume, than to compare him to Benny Hill? ...wait, what? 17:46 Correspondence Catch-Up! Two letters; one with a late entry for last week's question, and another admonishing The Boys for insulting a celebrity. 23:50 Pickin' And Grinnin'; if this trailer's a-rockin', do come a-knockin'... for international news! 26:25 This Week In Stuff; the 'public service' section of the show, helping you make better media decisions. This week - hey, Manhattan! Here he iiissssss: Paul caught a Woody Allen movie, and The Lady Eve , thanks to his progression through His Royal Highness Roger Ebert's list of 100 important movies that film fans must see. Also, he's been jammin' to some Clutch. (not Clutch Cargo .) Spike's had a geek week, reveling in a recently discovered 1979 episode of the legendary kids' show Tiswas , reading blogs that feature a treasure trove of local tv and ghost hunting, and gets mad that a low-quality interloper is taking The Paul And Spike Show's place in the iTunes top 100 podcasts. 52:17 The big question on Twitter and Facebook this week was: What - if anything - do you miss the most about the 1990s? As always, an awesomely overwhelming response from the Paul and Spiketeers whose suggestions ranged from music to movies to youth to hair. Yes - hair. Big apologies to RynoWV - technical difficulties mean that his message didn't get included. So, we'll print his answer in full here: RynoWV - miss about the 90's? Sports dynasties. Pistons, 49ers, Braves, Yankees, Bulls, Cowboys. Teams I hated or loved, no middle. sorry for the typical American answer to your 90's question. I also miss seeing Tracey Gold on Growing Pains! There ya go. If you have a suggestion for a question, an Over/Under or even a response to a previous subject, get in touch via the usual address. #126 - with special guest, blogger All Click from allclick.blogspot.com

from The Paul And Spike Show Podcast on September 18, 2009
Duration: 0
This week, The Boys are joined by blogger All Click, who says, Hey, I really enjoyed being on the show. At one point I laughed so hard, beer almost came out my nose. No joke! Beer nose. Can you get a better recommendation than that? ------- 00:00 But first, a word from our sponsor, wink wink. 02:00 Alright, that's more like it. Off we go, and Paul has taken your advice and watched a show that a lot of you recommended. But to make room for something new, something old must be sacrificed, which means Paul has taken the which counterproductive fads have you ditched? quiz. 09:42 The Boys talk about how the podcast being once a week (as opposed to their old three-hour daily AM talk show) means they miss talking about the big stories when they break. Congress' most objectionable member, Joe Wilson (not Frank Zappa, as Spike seems to think) has made his opinion heard. But does it, as former prez Jimmy Carter inkles, suggest an undercurrent of racism? And what causes The South to act as it does...? 23:20 Oh sure, discussing individual news stories in depth is all well and good, but sometimes what you need is a quick overview of the week's global news stories. That's what Pickin' And Grinnin' is for, and it does it admirably. With banjos. 25:48 Guest time! Soon-to-be award winning blogger (when we make one up for him) All Click joins The Boys to discuss their weeks in stuff. Fellow emigrant Clickers has giving zombies some much-needed what-for in Resident Evil 5 , and he's been digging some late-night Hitchcock action (not a euphemism). Clickers' NetFlix pal Paul (get a room!) knows what he did last summer, and that he's been watching Be Kind Rewind . Spike's been perving over Kim Basinger's toolbox (both a euphemism and not a euphemism) with the utterly ghastly/hilarious While She Was Out . Paul, meanwhile, has been reading A Tale Of Two Cities and watching a doco about the Manson family. Should we be worried...? 57:20 The big question this week was about video games; the bestest and the worstest. The replies from the Paul and Spiketeers was, as always, overwhelmingly awesome and ran the gamut between old systems and new, popular games and hidden gems. At least one game appeared on one person's worst list and another person's best, one game acted as a laxative, and one almost caused a divorce. Thoughts? Additions? Subtractions? Get in touch at the usual address and let 'em know. To get prior warning of ensuing weeks' subjects, check Spike's Twitter or Facebook out on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. ------- Thanks again to Clickers for being such an awesome guest. If you fancy being a guest on the worldwide radio phenomenon known as The Paul And Spike Show, get in touch via the usual address, and let us know. Paulson The IMF is uniquely positioned to identify best practices for sovereign wealth funds, building on existing guidelines for foreign exchange management, Mr. Paulson said in the text of remarks to be delivered before the IMFs policy-steering committee, which is convening as part of the annual meeting of the IMF — and its sister organization the World Bank — in Washington this weekend. Sovereign wealth funds, government-owned pools of capital, have attracted attention of policy-makers as the size of their assets has exploded and their activity in equity investment has grown. Developed countries, the recipients of much of the investment from sovereign wealth funds, are worried growing cross-border investment could feed protectionism. They want the funds to commit to transparency and market-based investment principles.
