Kelsey Smith Briggs lost her life before the age of three due to Child Abuse at the hands of Mike Porter. It is a Tragic story but one that must be shared.Hopefully Kelsey's story will touch your heart and you will be willing to step up to the plate and help children who can't help themselves. Please Read her story below... Kelsey Smith-Briggs was born in Oklahoma on December 28,2002 after her parents Lance Briggs and Raye Dawn Smith were divorced. Lance had abused Raye Dawn and caused their first child to miscarry after he punched her in the stomach. Witnesses say she had many black eyes throughout their marriage as well. At the end of 2004 Raye Dawn Smith started dating a man named Michael Lee Porter and Kathie Briggs, Kelsey's paternal grandmother, got visitation. Bruises started appearing on Kelsey after her visits with the Briggs. The first reported incident of suspected child abuse regarding Kelsey was made on Jan.17,2005. Kelsey Smith Briggs grandmother Kathie Briggs was granted custody Jan.24,2005. Raye Dawn Smith married Michael Lee Porter on April 18,2005. On May 3,2005 Kelsey was taken out of her grandmother's care by OKDHS because Kelsey's legs were broken while in her care and she and Lance became suspects in the abuse. May 4,2005 Kelsey was moved to her maternal Grandmother Gayla Smith. Kelsey had lost weight and hair while with Kathie and she thrived with Gayla. The two instances of argued abuse that happened to Kelsey from January 2005 to the day she died were the abrasions and bruises on her bottom in January 2005,and the two spiral breaks to her legs in April 2005. She had been with Kathie, Lance, and Raye Dawn on both occasions. June 15,2005 Judge Craig Key sent Kelsey back to her mom and stepfather. Mike Porter was not a suspect in the abuse until after her death and DHS said they the only person they didn't want Kelsey returned to was Kathie Briggs. Kelsey was visited by five agencies on almost a daily basis. Her biological father, Lance Briggs, was in Iraq from the end of May to August or early September. He was undergoing care for either his addiction to pain pills or because he wife was leaving him at a treatment facility in Fort Benning, GA. On October 11,2005 Kelsey was sexually assaulted and murdered by her Stepfather Micheal Lee Porter.Raye Dawn left to pick up Mike's daughter from school which took 36 to 50 minutes while Kelsey napped. Two weeks later Porter was arrested on first degee murder, later, the charge of sexual assault was added when a second autopsy confirmed a tear in her rectum and vagina and child porn was found on Mike's computer. Kathie Briggs teamed up with Mike when he was released on bond and emailed, called him, and met with him; all to have Raye Dawn charged with Kelsey's murder. Raye Dawn was charged with enabling child abuse after Kathie harassed and threatened the DA into charging her with something. On February 2,2007 a plea negotiation was entered and approved by the Briggs family. The stepfather plead guilty to a reduced charge of Enabling Child Abuse and received 30 years in prison. He has no possibility of parole for 25.5 years. He will never have to register as a sex offender. The DA wanted to take him to trial, but Lance Briggs asked the DA to offer the plea. Kelsey's mother Raye Dawn Smith went on trial July 9,2007.She has since been found guilty of enabling child abuse,she was sentenced by a tainted jury to 27 years in prison. She will get an appeal. The District Attorney Richard Smothermon says she knew,or should have known about Kelsey's abuse. She thought the abuse was coming from the Briggs and once Kelsey was away from them, she thought she had a medical condition. She did not know Mike Porter is a pedophile. From "Understanding Aging - Biomedical and Bioengineering Approaches" held at UCLA June 28th whether this can be extrapolated to include human organismal aging itself is not yet known. The correlation between telomere length and age is very strong and shorter telomeres directly correspond to shorter human life expectancy, but "cause and effect" are still debated. Finding ways to prevent telomere shortening could be an ideal way to address these issues and answer the question once and for all: Does prevention of telomere shortening extend our lifespans? It is unfortunate that anything that is done to extend the lifespan of our cells will also extend the lifespan of our cancer cells. Excision of the telomerase gene and genes involved in the "Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres" (ALT) pathway is one way to overcome this cancer issue. But our lifespan will be limited more than ever by the length of our telomeres. This leaves us with the irrefutable conclusion that we will be unable to significantly extend our lifespans without finding a cure for cancer that doesn't limit our ability to extend the lengths of our telomeres. In hopes that the cure for cancer will be forthcoming, several biotech organizations and academic institutions have accepted the challenge of finding ways to prevent telomere shortening by transiently inducing the activity of telomerase. The purpose of this presentation will be to review the current progress, including the recent discovery of several small molecules that induce telomerase activity in normal human cells.

Kelsey Briggs grandmother Kathie Briggs was granted custody Jan.24,2005. Raye Dawn Smith married Michael Lee Porter on April 18,2005. On May 3,2005 Kelsey was taken out of her grandmothers care by OKDHS. Kelsey was put in protective custody because of her leg injuries. At that time Raye Dawn was having unsupervised visitation with Kelsey,sometimes in the presence of Mike Porter which went against the court order. During this time Raye and Mike had Kelsey alot more than Kathie did. May 4,2005 Kelsey was moved to her maternal Grandmother Gayla Smith. Kelsey suffered months of documented abuse,which included two CONFIRMED cases of abuse.The two instances that were Confirmed abuse were the abrasions and bruises on her bottom in January 2005,and the two spiral breaks to her legs in April 2005.June 15,2005 Judge Craig Key sent Kelsey back to her mom and stepfather.The judge stated,"Kelsey's abuser was unknown." Kelsey was visited by a social worker every week. Her biological father Lance Briggs was a soldier in Iraq he was undergoing care at a treatment facility and was in the process of checking out from his duty in Fort Benning,Georgia.Lance was schedueled to be home within days. On October 11,2005 Kelsey was murdered by her Stepfather Micheal Lee Porter.Raye Dawn and Michael Porter were the only ones around Kelsey in the hour leading up to her death. Raye went to pick Whitney up from school.Whitney is Mike Porter's Bio daughter from a previous relationship. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the abdomen,it was ruled a Homicide. Kelsey Briggs died just days before her father was to return. Two weeks later Porter was arrested on first degee murder. Her mother was later charged with two felonies of Child Neglect and Enabling Child Abuse. In April of 2006 Kelsey's body was exhumed for a second autopsy where sexual abuse was documented. The Stepfather's charges were amended to add the sexual abuse. Porter and Smith divorced after Kelsey's death. On February 2,2007 a plea negotiation was entered and approved by the paternal family. The stepfather plead guilty to a reduced charge of Enabling Child Abuse and received 30 years in prison. He has no possibility of parole for 25.5 years. Kelsey's mother Raye Dawn Smith went on trial July 9,2007.She has since been found guilty of enabling child abuse,she will serve 27 years in prison.Without the possibility of parole for 23 years. The District Attorney Richard Smothermon says she knew,or should have known about Kelsey's abuse. Alot of people failed Kelsey.Remember her story the next time you think a child is being abused.Please report it,if you don't, that child may suffer the same fate as Kelsey.Please don't let that happen. A new law has been named for Kelsey in Oklahoma to prevent this type of failure in the Oklahoma State System.
