What makers the story remarkable is that Mr. Kern retired at 82 years old, and believed that the success of his company only happened in the years that took place after typical retirement age. Mr. and Mrs. Kern took the funds from the sale of the company, and invested them in their philanthropic foundation, where he now works. He also shared the proceeds with employees of long standing, who were surprised to receive significant monetary gifts after his "retirement".

For your summer reading list -- From its British roots to its American contemporaries, the ballad song form has been around for centuries. "The Rose and The Briar: Death, Love, and Liberty in the American Ballad" is a 2004 compilation of essays on the topic, and co-editor Greil Marcus recently spoke with WFUV's Julianne Welby about the book.
