142,784 Views - In the summer of 1992, a bitter Clark Hagins had been going around the South Bay, and angrily telling anyone within' earshot that it was 'his' hard working three piece band ...that 'trully really' started the 'grunge' rock sound revolution as G.e. had long been well known around Los Angeles for their show organizing and local tape sellings at all the record stores,...and sometimes Higgins would go down to Torrance and 'burn out' beach in Redondo and literally sell tapes out of the trunk of his car as he handed out flyers to yet 'another G.e. concert performance' as G.e. would play with as many local bands as they could. From Prop 13 to the White Kapz to Death G.e. played with them all ! And quite often, G.e. weren't just 'part of' the show; THEY 'WERE' THE SHOW ! Suddenly,..on mtv and in the media of kroq and magazines like Rolling Stone, Hagins' beloved 'underground' music had become all the rage of the land across the United States,..yet Hagins felt he had nothing; not only no label deal ...either major or indie but infact suddenly no real band either as long time G.e. bassist Rick Carmody was slowly phasing out of G.e. in favor of other punk rock and more funner 'jam bands' around the South Bay of Redondo Beach,... So in June of 1992, hagins decided to lash out.. In his own melodic crazy way,.... The June 1992 'Agenda' cd went on sale at practically every record store in Los Angeles County as funded and financed by Hagins alone...and of the 8 songs was this new 'ahead of its time classic epic' called simply; THE BALLAD OF KURT COBAIN NOW, try to imagine this song coming out in June of 1992 !! With Cobain's popularity running super-high,..but not with the tiny but determined Hagins.... "I'll never forget what the guys at Goboy Records said when they heard this song,..they were like - what the fuck is this ???? (Laughs)" says Hagins THE BALLAD OF KURT COBAIN has to be one of the most bizarre songs by Greenhouse effect what with it's Ventures like Surf tinged vibe that then suddenly breaks into Rush's "Natural Sciense' in the middle bizarrely quite indeed ! the song also contains a clumsy 3/4 drum patterned part that recalls the 1989 G.e. song itself '3/4'....before then going back into the melodically infectuous surf like 'mellow' song again - that really has nothing lyrically to do with Kurt Cobain,..... Ofcourse the insistant hagins would then mail copies to Flipside Magazine getting assurances that the song 'will' make its way to Cobain himself as well as mailing copies to Geffen, sst, and sub pop records, and many other zines too - "all those fanzines or 'zines' were very important to g.e. - we really loved this magazine called FACTSHEET FIVE " remembers hagins "Flipside magazine and BEN IS DEAD ZINE were important too - sometimes they really hated us ,..but quite oddly,..we would get 'good reviews' in these too sometimes - ....and ....they better say nice things about g.e. 'cause i never forget (Laughs) " says hagins Ofcourse its well known now that "WHITE BLACK THANG' is a part of the 8 song 'Agenda' album as well as "Search and Destroy" and "People - that won't back down".... Only one more cassette would come out from G.e. - the final one; 1992's BIG TEEN DOLLAR$ - ANOTHER BRAZEN ATTACK UPON COBAIN and Nirvana ,..before G.e. split in November of that year In 1994, G.e. issued the "Fountain" weird cd and then in 1995 THE ROCK OPERA WHITE SUBURBAN LIAR$ - NOW A CLASSIC as it contains the track "Misogynistia"...... ========================== ---------------------------------- No Greenhouse Effect song is better known and discussed like 1991's AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL from 'Going Legit'. This 1976 era Genesis 'A Trick of the tail" meets 1972 'Captain beyond' meets 1977 Rush -like song is one of the best and most talked about by South Bay (Redondo beach/ Torrance) Grunge rock Super Stars of 2009 GREENHOUSE EFFECT. "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL' was the central theme song of the rock opera "Maury - A lad insane" and the original 1990/91' era movie script ,...about a San Pedro transient - just back from the war against Saddam in iraq in 1990....only to find himself homeless, drunken, and writing poetry in the streets,...as society passes him by,.... "I just wanna fly but together we can die - very high" extolls Clark Hagins "You don't like goin' to work but you don't like bein' at home,... The drum bashing by Clark hagins here in the studio version is nice but to fully understand this song, you probobly had to see it performed live as with drummer Marty Silva (Crucial note; the live footage at the 'reactre' club in Manhattan beach California with Silva is mandatory G.e. viewership,....g.e. 'always' played this song live in their setlist - and it was always one of the most important songs in the 'story' that was and 'is' G.e. ! ============== --------------------- Awe the classic. Of all the songs in the huge illustrious G.e. catologue, there is probobly no bigger classic than the stirring "Addicted"from 1992. This song (and ofcourse it's epic video detailing the life of Clark the famous Shark) rocks so well and so good with it's Doors-meets-Batlord-meets-Bowie meets Strawberry Alarmclock weevings that it has grown to be one of those tracks "more known than G.e. is known itself!",....Like 'White Black Thang" and "Brandy",...'Addicted' is a gripping piece of serious songwriting without an ounce of cheese or suck ANYWHERE near it !! This 'accoustic' meets drumming song moves along in a way similar but no to "People(that won't back down)"......THE ANGST FILLED COLD LYRICS ARE INTENSE MY FRIEND; "i CAN'T STRAY FROM YOU - i'M ADDICTED,...i MUST OBEY STRICTLY - i'M ADDICTED" - ,...and when i pray darlin' - i'm addicted,...and as i say this; I'm addicted,..... This classic song goes well way past G.e. into the territory of "I'm only sleeping' or "Nowhere man" by the Beatles indeed ! Its got it all; Great playing, atmosphere, ambiance, passion, Dark cold emptyness, death, alone-ness, and a 'feel' unmatched,.... The David Bowie-like accoustic aura is spell binding indeed,...and this song is not anywhere near a garage unlike lotsa G.e. that we know of -all too well... A stunner A classic ! Notes; the crucial keyboard breakdown in the middle By Bill Krodel was written by Clark hagins and it adds a Doors meets Bee Gees meets Roy Orbison vibe that is unreal indeed ! ================== ----------------------- The Song "Actor" by Greenhouse Effect. The "Cheesey" slow 'metal-like ballad' is so unusual for G.e. as this very 'cringe-worthy ' classic mulls along almost like White Snake or some really really LAME Deep Purple or Zep cover band (which is what G.e. really 'was' in their beginning stages),...Fortunately, this is probobly the last song of its kind by G.e. as Phil Keegan plays some beautiful Glam metal to Rush like choral wrythm guitar to go with the anstfully bad lyrics and singing from Clark Hagins....but, ofcourse, ..what is 'always' so weird about G.e. is how they turn a dud into lemon-ade for; AT GOOGLEVIDEO.COM 'THIS' IS ONE OF GE'S MOST DOWNLOADED AND SOUGHT AFTER SONGS - FOR WHAT-EVER REASON,...likely it is because of the cheesey Zeppelin White Snake gay 'metalness' of this slow track,...and as we all know; there is alot of rednecks out there that like and consume pure shit....hence the success of Greenhouse Effect's very early "Actor" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ==================== -------------------------------- IN early 1989, Greenhouse Effect began working on their second recording project and the sound that they would achieve with "The four song E.P." would be far different from February 1988's GLOBAL WARMING CD. and tracks like "Precarious", Racers, and the Magic Man.... Guitarist Phil Keegan would come up with four very interesting new song foundations but the drumming patterns of Clark Hagins would also aid heavily in the new direction of G.e. "3/4" - a song played in 3/4 time signature with sad pathetic lyrics about losing a love meshed along well with Keegan's gloomey grungey guitars and overdubs....Six feet under - which is a bluesy cut...now is one of ge's all time favorites ,..as Keegan handles virtually all of the production on the track - ,...the very marvelous song "Snake' is a fine cut - what with it's lyrics about a guy being 'set up' on fake rape accusations,..but the obvious most wonderous cut has to be 1989's 'A CURRENT AFFAIR' a song played in Hagins' bizarre 5/16 drum signature time and made into a classic by the muddy heavy wah wah guitar of Phil Keegan,..."Don't kill one,..You must kill many" exclaims Haggins in this very political apparent 'pro death penalty" song which today in 2009, Hagins says is among Ge's greatest tracks ever - AND IT IS !! ======================== GREENHOUSE EFFECT HAVE landed recently in the top categorys of 'Grunge rock' and 'Emo' with the aid of the help of tracks like 1992's MANIPULATION and the crucial 'AGENDA' CD Produced by Bill Krodel and Mark Nathanson and released In June 92' by Massachusetts Indie Label 'Rock City Productions' and executive Producer jeffery Snowe. This bizarrely interesting tracks rocks out as if the FOO FIGHTERS - BUT THIS THING was recorded in the summer of 1991 - even before knowledge of the coming NIRVANA !! WITH EACH record, G.e. would constantly 'evolve' their guitar driven garage sound and by the time they got to the summer of 1991 and May 91's beating of Rodney G. King, G.e. had come up with even more great material - enough even to top the opera "Going Legit" !! ' A WHITE BLACK THANG' would be a track long ago written by Hagins as early as 1990 and laughed at as 'silly' by G.e's first guitarist Phil Keegan (Dr. Phil). Hagins would hold onto the demo idea ...and again present it to Rick Carmody during the 'Going Legit' sessions in December 1990 through February 91'.....Carmody, too, thought that the song with the broad chorus and light then heavy guitar parts was too 'commercial and cheesey' sounding so Hagins then took his 'advanced' ideas of now high tech 'grunge rock' to the major labels - once more..., playing a demo version of 'White black' to several "A "I'm no angel,..this i admit" extolls Keegan as he tears into the Entertainment industry in this four minute very political rant (typical for the edgy G.e.) "looking back at 'Six feet under' - it has become more than a G.e. cult classic - it is like our own "Boris the spider' to the Who " says Clark Hagins "the song is so brilliant with the angery terse lyrics that are so mean and political,...Dr. Phil takes no prisoners here - he hunts for the head and gets it" says Higgins ...and true enough ; today in 2008 and 2009 "Six Feet Under" is one of Ge's most known and downloaded songs at Google Video.com ,...even some weeks challenging the mighty White Black Thang and BRANDY !!
