The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog Copyright - Elektra Records "I Wanna Be Your Dog" is a 1969 song by The Stooges, featured on their self-titled debut album. Its memorable riff is composed of only three notes (G, F# and E), and is played continuously throughout the song. The 3-minute-and-9-second long song, with its raucous, distortion-heavy guitar intro, and steady, driving beat, is a shining example of the Stooges' inventive heavy metal and punk sound. The song has been covered by many artists, including Slayer, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Sex Pistols, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, Swans, Uncle Tupelo, Magic Dirt (who played it backwards), Emilie Simon, The Andalusian Dogs (German Avantgarde-Trashband) and many others. Slayer recorded a tribute parody called " I Am Gonna Be Your God" for their Undisputed Attitude album. The song is featured in Guy Ritchie's hit film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels as well as the films Friday Night Lights it is played after half-time in the state championship game, The Crow: City of Angels (in which Iggy Pop played the role of Curve, one of the villains) and Crimson Rivers II: Angels of the Apocalypse, the skateboard video by Flip, entitled "Sorry", an episode of TV show Skins (Episode 2.9) and in an episode of the TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother (Episode 2.16: Stuff). It was also used in the games Vietcong and Grand Theft Auto IV, the latter of which features Iggy Pop as a DJ. In 2007, R.E.M performed this song with Patti Smith in their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "Life on Mars?" is a song by David Bowie first released in 1971 on the album Hunky Dory. The track featured guest piano work by keyboardist Rick Wakeman. When released as a single in 1973, it reached #3 in the UK and stayed on the chart for 13 weeks. The song re-entered the UK charts at #55 over 30 years later, largely because of a TV show by the same name that used the song. The song has its origins from an occurrence when Bowie was asked to write English lyrics to a French song ("Comme d'habitude"), the song he came up with was titled "Even a Fool Learns to Love". The Canadian songwriter Paul Anka bought the rights to the original French version, and rewrote it into an English song called "My Way," later made famous by Frank Sinatra. Bowie's version was never released. "Life on Mars?" was Bowie's riposte to losing out on a fortune; it has a similar chord progression to "My Way," and as Bowie explained in an interview with the BBC, it is a "modernistic take" on the Anka/Sinatra song. In February 1999, Q magazine listed the single as one of the 100 greatest of all time, as voted by the readers. It has continued to chart in the Q 'best of' polls, featuring most recently in 2006 at #45. A BBC Radio 2 poll in 1986 crowned it as the best David Bowie song of all time. The song's second verse is made up entirely of social observations, with Bowie discussing the faults with American cultural imperialism and the state of Britain.
