Ralph Bakshi (BSS #214)Ralph Bakshi (BSS #214)
from The Bat Segundo Show
May 21, 2008

Ralph Bakshi is the director of such films as Heavy Traffic, Coonskin, and American Pop. There is also a recent book, Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph Bakshi, now out that collects his work. Condition of the Show: Caught in a musical daydream. Guest: Ralph Bakshi Subjects Discussed: [List forthcoming] EXCERPT FROM SHOW: Correspondent: I wanted to ask you about music in your films. It’s certainly important in American Pop. You pilfered from your record collection for that, as well as the “Maybelline” sequence in Heavy Traffic. And there’s “Ah’m a Niggerman” from Coonskin, which you wrote. I’m wondering if you did this because you have an aversion to Carl Stalling-style orchestral music. Bakshi: First of all, I love music. I’ve always loved music. And I’ve loved various kinds of music. Music is part of our lives. It’s part of the soundtrack that what we all grow up with. Especially in my day. I don’t know today. There’s so many things going on. I’m talking about yesterday and my day, which are the 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. Music is so emotionally important to the movie. It’s just as important as anything else. If the song is emotionally correct for a scene, the scene plays better. Or the scene plays better than it would have with a different song. So music is so critical to movies. I chose songs that I knew emotionally worked with these scenes that I wrote. Because whenever I listened to music while either driving in a car or sitting at a bar or listening to Coltrane or Billy Holiday – you daydream. If you don’t daydream to music, then you’re not listening to good music. (Lengthier excerpts from this program can be found here and here.)

JPH 107: LITTLE FEAT Interview Part 2JPH 107: LITTLE FEAT Interview Part 2
from ` JOE's PODHOLE
August 23, 2007

JOE'S PODHOLE #107: Now is as good a time as any to let all of you new listeners know that I'm always giving away free stuff on this podcast. Head over to www.joespodhole.com to learn how YOU can WIN a copy of Ripe Tomatoes, AUTOGRAPHED by the LITTLE FEAT! You can also win a brand-new pair of little girls' shoes (size 10), autographed by Sam and Fred. My wife bought them for our daughter, but she didn't like 'em. Whatever. Now back to our regularly-scheduled program... Here's part two of two with the band that'll make you move your boogaloo, Little Feat! This whole experince was surreal for me, and doubly-so for Mr. Big. He was as jazzed about interviewing Little Feat as I was about interviewing Anthrax last year! I tried playing it off like it was no big deal, but I'll admit... I was intimidated. These guys are musical legends, to be sure. They've opened for the Grateful Dead more times than Rosie O' Donnell has opened for a Little Debbie Snack-cake. They've done it all, seen it all, and then done it over again... and now they're on Joe's Podhole. During part one of our interview, percussionist Sam Clayton sat motionless with his eyes closed. He seemed to be either ignoring us, or (worse yet) tolerating us. The minute I brought up sex, however, the sleeping giant awoke! During this, the continuation of our Little Feat interview bonanza, Sam continues to tap into what the Podhole is all about. By the way, I kept calling Sam the "drummer" even though I know he's the conga player. No disrespect to Richie Hayward - I was just a little hazy during the interview. Anyway, Fred Tackett also continues to spin yarn after classic yarn of his time well-spent with rock royalty. He and his lovely wife Patricia also take some time to tell you fans how you can truly immerse yourselves in the Little Feat experience. It's called Feat Fest, and it's happening September 14th and 15th in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Get your asses down there to see what this seven-piece jam band can cook up for a crowd of good-time lovin' hippies. You owe it to yourselves. Also, be sure to download Joe's Podhole every week for your 30-minute Defense Of Fun And Music That Doesn't Suck. If you want to see me without my mask, hit the links of the week at joespodhole.com. Exactly 2 minutes into the clip, there we are... Here's the music for Joe's Podhole #107: "Tunnel" by The Blame (partial) "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" by Little Feat "In A Town Like This'" by Little Feat "The Ingenue'" by Little Feat

JOE'S PODHOLE #106: Talking to Fred Tackett of Little Feat is like talking to a wizard. He's like Gandalf The Grey, except without the annoying hobbits running around everywhere. Fred's level of experience in the music business is surpassed only by his ability to rock your ass. But the real mojo is HOW he rocks your ass. Fred does it with subtlety. Fred does it with understated style. Fred does it with a guitar, and a nice-guy smile. You dash to the beer tent, and when you get back to the stage Fred's rocking-ass with a freaking trumpet. He's played with many iconic superstars, but none moreso than those in the band Little Feat. Fred's been with Little Feat for a damn long time, so it seemed appropriate that he be the one to field what could be the greatest Joe's Podhole interview to date. Join Mr. Big and myself as we bring Fred Tackett into the world of Joe's Podhole, and accept his invitation into the world of Little Feat. In this part one (of a two-part extravaganza), we talk at length with Fred about Lowell George. We talk about tomatoes. We talk about Dylan. We talk about Seger. Hell, we even talk about Samuel Jackson. I bet you didn't know that Little Feat came up with an original word to describe their musical style... listen to the show to find out what it is. Here's the backstory on our day in Chicago: Mr. Big and I enjoyed at least an hour-and-a-half of the street festival before hopping on the tour bus and conducting this interview, so it's safe to say we were both lit like Michael Jackson shooting a Pepsi commercial. Mr. Big was so keyed-up to talk to Little Feat (he's a dyed-in-the-wool Feat follower), that he kept tapping my leg while I was trying to ask Fred my questions. All Big wanted was for me to shut up and let him ask his own questions. It was really freaking funny, because neither one of us was in much shape to interview anyone. In fact, I think our "unprofessional" demanor might have been the very reason that legendary Little Feat conga player Sam Clayton decided to join in the interview. For more on that, read the writeup for show #2. We had a blast and wrapped it up just before hitting the front row for yet another killer set by one of the best live bands in the world. Be sure to listen to part 2 with Little Feat, available now for FREE! Just click the banner at the top of the page (the one where I'm surfing the ipod, and look for JPH Episode 107). Here's the music for Joe's Podhole #106: "Tunnel" by The Blame (partial) "Don't Bogart That Joint" by Little Feat "Texas Twister" by Little Feat "Crack In Your Door'" by Little Feat "Ass For Days'" by Little Feat

Answer To Last Week's Trivia Question: Q: This single debuted on Billboardâs Hot 100 on April 19, 1975 and catapulted from #98 to #1 in nine weeks, remaining in the top position for four weeks. The artist also recorded the song in Spanish, and it was released as a single later that year. It also charted, peaking at #49 on the Billboard pop charts that same year, making it the first #1 single ever to chart simultaneously in different languages by the same artist. What was the song and who was the artist? A: This is related to last weeks trivia question. The answer is Love Will Keep Us Together by Daryl Dragon and Toni Tenille, better known as The Captain And Tenille. The only correct answer was from Brian Cowie, who won last week's contest! Kudos to Brian, but no prize award this week. See you next week!
