Food Wishes Video Recipes Wins "Best Video Blog" at 2009 Foodbuzz Blog Awards!

It's with much joy, pride, and humility (well, two out of three ain't bad) that I officially make the announcement this blog has won the "Best Video Blog" at the First Annual Foodbuzz Blog Awards! I think Homer Simpson put it best when he said, "Woo Hoo!" I can't express how much all your support over the last year has meant to me, not because I can't find the words, but because I'm way too hung over. I also have to run off to the last event of the weekend, a farewell brunch at Restaurant LuLu, featuring a make-you-own Bloody Mary(s) bar, which should really help with this headache. Speaking of which, I haven't had the time or brain waves to find any real photos of the event, so I grabbed this picture of some guy named Rick Best posing with a borrowed Oscar statue at 1989 Academy Awards to simulate the scene. A million thanks to Foodbuzz and everyone involved. Stay tuned for a recap and links to the other winners! Here is the actual iPhone video footage I took of the announcement: Photo by Alan Light

Here is an outtake from my recent video shoot down in LA with BNE. From watching my videos, most of you probably think I'm a nice guy who would be a fun and gracious co-worker, but nothing could be further from the truth. Call me a total diva, but if I have to perform to such an incredibly high level of excellence -- basically being awesome all the time -- then everyone around me needs to raise their game up to the same level -- from the Executive Producer all the way down to the lowly sweat patter. CONGRATULATIONS to BNE Executive Producer, Jude, and her husband Greg, who had a beautiful new baby girl this morning! Harper arrived at 3:55 AM, and weighed in at a healthy 7 lb 13oz.

Heading Back to San Francisco after Four Days in Foodie Heaven at the Food & Wine Classic
from Food Wishes Video Recipes on June 22, 2009

I'm flying back into SFO tonight after experiencing my first, and hopefully not last, Food & Wine Classic in Aspen. With so many famous cooks all crammed into this beautiful, but very small town, the best way to describe this event would be to call it a "celebrity chef petting zoo." By the way, I highly doubt any of the participating chefs would mind being objectified in the petting zoo analogy. If fact, I'm hoping they start using the phrase, and I get credit for coining it! The chefs that come to Aspen for the Food & Wine Classic know the drill. Sure they're there to cook, lecture, and party with their fellow foodies, but more so they are there to be photographed with fans, asked questions, patted on the back, and told repeatedly, "you're my favorite chef!" The food and wine were amazing, but what I will remember most about this event are all the interesting exchanges between the various participants. Ming Tsai and Jacque Pepin I had a classic Smackdown, which I just blogged about on my American Food site on About. There were Top Chef winners everywhere, and they certainly enjoyed chatting and joking with each other, as well as rubbing elbows with the cult-like fans of the show. The old guard – Jacque, Ming, Bobby, and Mario (you don't need the last names do you?), all appeared in multiple venues around the event to large adoring throngs. I have a bunch of articles lined up to appear on About.com, so I'll be sure to post links here when those go up. In the meantime, if you would like to see a few hundred photos I shot while there, I just created a photo album with Google Picasa. The shots you see here are some of my personal favorites. I haven't had time to write any captions yet, or remove bad and/or redundant photos, but they still may be fun to take a peak at to get a glimpse of my Food & Wine Classic experience. I also shot a small amount of video footage with my very low resolution Flip Cam. The video you see here is a short excerpt from a very entertaining demo by Iron Chef Michael Symon called "For the Love of Pork." How was I going to miss that one? The sound isn’t great, but you should be able to hear him relay a funny story of how Tom Colicchio help him with the subtleties of naming a dish. Enjoy, and stay tuned for more. And yes, I will be back in the kitchen soon!

Temporary Showreel
from KMOGVIDEO.net on June 01, 2009

Here s a temporary showreel i put together in Premiere Pro, just a simple compilation of some of the past work i ve done for my presentation at my universities end of year show. I dislike the idea of putting a showreel together because i always think that the video i create after will be something i like and would have wanted it present, so have been putting it off for a while and still even only label this one with temporary The audio choice may seem strange for a showreel but i found it hard finding something that could fit both the darker and lighter side of my videos without seeming too out of place. So i went with Spylacopa s Together We Become Together which i think work s out well. So i ve pretty much finished uni now, it s kind of scary but am kind of excited to begin some projects i ve been wanting to do for a while, one of which is well underway, the website is already looking good for it, all i m gonna say is it s gonna be a two part project with both an audio side and a video side to it and it ll be a bit more literal than some of my past videos and music. I m also well into the development of the new design of this site (i know it hasn t been long since the last) i ve decided to ditch to k2 frame-work and start from scratch and create something that s really form fitted for what i want to do here. This time around there s going to be both a blog for written posts and video posts (the video posts will be quite similar to how they re set up now) it ll all be based on the one wordpress install but there will be multiple feeds if you only want to subscribe to the videos, written and of course both. If you care to see a screenshot of what it ll looking like live online right now click here. I m hoping to get it live soon, but having some troubles with cross browser compatibility, i m releasing this screen shot now as the design is gonna be a little different when it s done but the frame work layout etc.. should stay the same, more soon!

Trader Joe's Meatloaf - Do As I Say, and Occasionally Do
from Food Wishes Video Recipes on April 06, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
This video recipe for Trader Joe's meatloaf was produced for a few reasons. First, I like meatloaf, and Trader Joe's (a chain of great little grocery stores) has some wonderful ingredients that make this recipe easy and delicious. Secondly, I would love to be hired as a sort of video spokesperson for them - showing off their products for the benefit of my foodwish faithful, as well as the benefit of my feeble checking account balance. Since I really use and love their products, it seems to be a perfect fit. The only problem is I don't think they know about me yet. I have people working on this, but I thought their job would be made easier if I had a few examples they could refer to. Regarding the actually cooking of this meatloaf; I've always told people to cook their meatloaf to an internal temp of 155 degrees F. I've begged them to get a quality meat thermometer and use it religiously. I've told them the cooking times given in meatloaf recipes are only an approximation that will vary greatly. So, it's with some shame that I now confess I haven't followed my own advice. I feel like the cardiologist who gets caught buying fried pork rinds at the mini-mart… "They're… err… for my friend." Since I usually use the same amount of meat (2 pounds) and fixings, I just cook my loaf for one-hour and ten minutes at 325 degrees F, and it comes out beautifully moist. But, for whatever reason, when I removed this lovely loaf o' meat from the oven, I decided to pop in a thermometer to check. As you can see from the completely un-edited photo here, the final internal temp was…155 degrees exactly. Enjoy! Ingredients: 2 tbsp butter 3 cup diced onions, carrots, celery 2 lbs ground beef 1/2 cup roasted tomato salsa 1/2 cup milk 1 egg, beaten 3/4 cup fine breadcrumbs 1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper 2 1/2 tsp salt pinch of cayenne 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce For the glaze: 1/2 cup roasted tomato salsa 3 tbsp brown sugar For the sauce: 1/2 the cooked veggies 1 tbsp butter 2 tbsp flour 3 cups beef broth salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Some "Fat Tuesday" Temptations Before Your Lenten Fast

Okay, so you're probably aren’t fasting for Lent, at least not in the traditional sense, but that doesn't mean you still can't indulge for Mardi Gras (French for "fat Tuesday" …and it's not called that for nothing!). The official motto of Mardi Gras is, "Laissez le bon temp rouler" (pronounced lazay-la-bon-tom-roulay), which means, "let the good times roll!" With that in mind, I've linked below to some New Orleans-inspired classics I've posted before. I hope you give them a try. Enjoy! This is a test. The link below will allow you to download the salmon recipe I posted yesterday to your iPod. I'm not a big technophile, so I don't fully understand the impact of this, if any. What I'm hoping is you, my loyal visitors, tell me what this means. Is this a big deal? Will you cook with headphones on while watching an iPod movie? Can I make money with iPod videos? What is the difference between a podcast and a iPod movie? Can someone make me an App? Okay, enough with the questions. Get to work. Enjoy! Cheese Cupid's Arrow Points Out Pairings You'll Love
from Food Wishes Video Recipes on February 02, 2009

My wife Michele worked in retail cheese sales for many years, and her favorite part of the job was helping customers with choosing the perfect cheese for the occasion, as well as matching the cheese to the drinks being served. With so many cheeses, and so many beverages, this can be a daunting task for a host. Since I have exclusive rights to Michele's extensive cheese pairing knowledge, I'll have to tell you about the Cheese Cupid. This interactive, animated guide was created by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board to promote their regional cheeses. It is one of the better online cheese pairing tools I've come across. We took a trip up to Aaron Jonas' "Chef Within" Cooking School in Petaluma (future site of some Food Wishes film production), so I could do a few tests with my video camera. Since I had some lovely cheese samples sent to me from the aforementioned Wisconsinites, I thought I'd film Michele testing some of the cheese and beverage pairings. You'll see the Cheese Cupid in the brief video clip below. It's simple to use, has cool graphics, and even features a (very) friendly female voice. Not only does she try and seduce you into falling in love with these cheeses, she also pronounces the names for you, so you can sound like a real gourmet at the store. Enjoy! For tips on setting up a cheese plate, check out this video I did for About.com last year. Also, you can contact Aaron Jonas at the "Chef Within" Cooking School in Petaluma for more information about his upcoming classes and events.

Two Point Zero!

Well it s been a long time in the waiting (for me at least), but here is the newly redesigned site. I was hoping to launch it along with my latest uni project, but opted into making this silly little teaser for the site instead because i want to spend more time on that project over the next month or so (it s driving me crazy). Anyway, this site isn t in it s final stage of the design as i have a few more things i want to incorporate whenever i have chance, including a toolbar under the video players with digg, del.icio.us, reddit etc buttons. Some people may know that i was planning on releasing this as a free videoblog theme once it was finished, i think that modding K2 isn t the best way for me to do that, i m instead going to start from a different open source theme which is less bloated with options and unused code (it will have some similar aspects as this one but will be a brand new theme in it s own right), i will also post a screencast which will show you how simple it is to post a video with this new theme platform! If you have any feature requests comment them below, contact me, or add me to skype: kmogvideo. Also i would like to thank Chris Coyier for his help with the featured content slider, not only did he create it, but he helped me customize it to dynamically pull my featured posts. I have a quite ambitious year planned ahead regarding these online projects so stay tuned for more. Check out this article i wrote for Moovy.ca on my workflow! p.s. some of the minor posts are temporarily disabled.
