Salmon Swimming Free – Rainforest Dispatches, chapter 7/9

from Choogle On! with Uncle Weed - Renegade documentaries on November 05, 2009
Duration: 0
Visiting again with friend Kevin, Uncle Weed discusses the negative impact salmon fish farms impart on the local aquaculture. Specifically, Atlantic salmon living in pens attract hazardous sea lice, are unable to spawn, are fed with small fish imported from South America, and are dyed to appear more attractive in the supermarket. Further the politically controversial fish farms add little benefit to the local economy. At the headquarters of Friends of Clayoqout Sound advocacy organization, Uncle Weed talks with Kevin Bruce, a concerned citizen newly arrived in Tofino to work as the office coordinator for the FOCS. With the sound of passing cars and buses, they discuss the economics of logging, stumpage fees, value of wilderness, conundrums of interconnectedness and property lines, the memorandum of understanding, logging on First Nations land and ways to help attain the Friends goal of ending all old-growth clearcuts on public lands. Scientific Panel Biosphere Reserve Clayoquot Green Economic Opportunities Project Vol 1 (1.3 MB PDF) Clayoquot Green Economic Opportunities Project Vol 2 (3.7 MB PDF) About Clayoquot Sound from FOCS What Is Clayoquot Sound? Clayoquot Sound is a magnificent, biologically rich, mostly wilderness area on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. It encompasses 350,000 hectares of land and ocean. A view of Clayoquot Sound Photo by Diego A. Garcia The land portion of Clayoquot Sound is 265,000 hectares (2,650 square kilometers or 1,000 square miles), comprising about 8% of Vancouver Island. It is covered with ancient temperate rainforest, a globally rare forest type. The remaining 85,000 hectares of Clayoquot Sound consist of ocean narrow inlets of the Pacific Ocean, into which empty rivers and lakes. Clayoquot Sound occupies a straight-line distance along the coast of 90 kilometers, between Barkley and Nootka Sounds. It reaches a maximum of 35 kilometres inland, up to the crest of snow-capped mountains. These mountains are part of the central spine of Vancouver Island and form the headwaters of the rivers that drain Clayoquot Sound. The Sound portion of the region s name indicates an indented section of coastline, with numerous inlets and islands. Clayoquot pronounced Klak-wot comes from Tla-o-qui-aht, the name of one of the First Nations tribes who live here. There are 5 communities in Clayoquot Sound: the town of Tofino and 4 First Nations reserves inhabited by Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations tribes. The total population of these 5 communities is about 3,000 (in 2005). Two well-known parks lie in Clayoquot Sound: the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park, and the southern portion of Strathcona Provincial Park. These and other parks protect one-third of Clayoquot s land area and less than one-quarter of its productive ancient forest. Industrial activities such as logging and fish farming have occurred and continue to occur across the landscape and ocean waters of Clayoquot Sound, but most of the Sound is still wilderness intact forest and wild ocean. The spectacular scenery attracts about one million tourists to Clayoquot each year. Clayoquot Sound—A Summer of Protest by Luke Moore Reading the injunction at Clayoquot Sound protest. Photo: Luke Moore. Over the past summer, the Kennedy River Bridge entrance to logging operations on Clayoquot Sound became the site of one of the largest civil disobedience campaigns in Canadian history. The protest followed the B.C. government s decision on April 13 to allow MacMillan Bloedel to proceed with a harvesting plan that will see the eventual cutting of another 51 percent of the area s old-growth forest. The B.C. government, perhaps coincidentally, is the largest single shareholder in MacBlo. Twenty-three percent of the forest has already been harvested. Although industry refers to logging as general integrated management, and there is a lot of rhetoric about improved forestry practices, large scale forest management remains environmentally unsound. If there is any improvement, it is that the future clearcuts will be smaller. Since the government decision, a brand-new 125 hectare clearcut graces the side of a mountain visible from the Kennedy River Bridge. The forest around Clayoquot Sound is one of the largest remaining stands of old-growth forest in North America. This is an irreplaceable cradle of rainforest biodiversity, and it can only be saved if the government will reverse its decision. Peace camp established To press for that reversal, a peace camp was set up by the Friends of Clayoquot Sound (FOCS), a Tofino-based environmental group which has fought for the protection of the forests for fourteen years. The camp served as a base for protesters, who blockaded the Kennedy River Bridge until the camp was closed down Oct. 4. To Zionists, everyone who opposes, or even just disagrees with, Zionism is not only anti-Semitic but "terrorist". Zionists see "terrorists" everywhere and in everything. By the same token, anything and anyone Zionists attack or kill must have been involved in "terrorism", according to the Zionist way of thinking. The only Zionist responses to anyone who opposes Zionism are the Old Testament methods of blockade, bombardment, devastation and slaughter. The only future that Zionism can offer is a sea of blood.

http://www.instablogs.com/ Gaza on the verge of humanitarian catastrophe Palestine It had been 20 days now since Israel decided to put its strong closure ever on Gaza Strip. For the first time in its history, Gaza suffers huge shortage in all basic needs. Nothing had entered Gaza Strip during this period except some few trucks once 10 days ago for UNRWA. Situation has badly developed in terms of food and other supplies. All bakeries in Gaza city are closed due to the absence of flora. Population in Gaza city (around 550,000) are the most infected and influenced population among Gaza Strip population in other areas. Population in Gaza city receives electricity 2 or 3 hours a day. Linking to the power supply, water supply, especially for multi-story and high buildings, is 4-6 hours a week. Interpol launches investigation Interpol announced Wednesday it is sending a team of investigators to Mexico to investigate the possibility that its communications systems and databases are not being used for legitimate purposes. The prospect was raised after the arrest of Ricardo Gutierrez Vargas, director for International Police Affairs at Mexico's (AFI), Federal Investigative Agency and the head of Mexico's Interpol office. The arrests came amid "a war of master proportions" between authorities and narcotics traffickers that have left more than 4,500 dead so far this year. Due to corruption at the highest levels of the Mexican government, and the almost effortless infiltration of security forces by the cartel, an ultimate victory by the state is far from certain. This is a huge industry with an extraordinary capacity to corrupt and intimidate the country. There's no easy solution , unless you put an end to the criminalization drugs, and that's not going to happen. Save the children campaign Internationally renowned organization Save the Children has pressed on Pakistan's government to revise child and family laws in the country in order to provide better protection to children against violence, abuse, and neglect both within and outside the family. According to available statistics, more than 5000 children suffered from violence in the year 2007 while many more cases go unreported. Save the Children has recently launched a national campaign in Pakistan, calling for early enforcement of the Child Protection Bill that was presented in 2006. The campaign aims at putting an end to all kinds of violence against children including corporal punishment in learning institutions. Alan Keyes non citizenship theory Alan Keyes the black Republican candidate who lost to Obama in the 2004 Senate race, is now trying to sue Obama, claiming that the new president-elect was not born in the U.S. Keyes filed suit in California Superior Court in Sacramento to stop the state from giving its electoral votes to Obama until evidence is shown to prove Obama was born in the U.S. Keyes was the presidential candidate of the American Independent Party in the 2008 election and was reportedly listed on the California state ballot. He has run for office several times before and never won. The story is old news for the Obama campaign. The Washington Post investigated months ago and debunked the non citizenship story. And FactCheck.org, an independent research project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania, also proved that Obama is, in fact, a natural born U.S. citizen. The facts: Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on Friday, August 4, 1961 at 7:24 p.m. http://www.instablogs.com/

http://www.instablogs.com Jordanian protest against Gaza blockade Hundreds of Jordanians walked through the streets of Amman in two different marches this week protesting against the siege of Gaza. The protests were organized by Islamic action front and permitted by the Jordanian authority. The two protest attempted to direct the international community attention to non humanitarian conditions in Gaza who s shutting down of cargo crossing and consequently preventing food medicine and fuel to going in. fuel shipments held from being sent to Gaza s main power plant has caused daily electrical blackouts for many of the Palestinians living there. This siege around Gaza has caused the death of more than a hundred people due to diseases untreated as well as death of animals due to unmet nutritional needs. Mexican crime reporter shot dead Armando Rodriguez said goodbye to his wife and two of their children and climbed into the car with his oldest girl, Ximena. As Rodriguez warmed up his car, an unknown gunman fired repeatedly into his body as Ximena watched . Increasingly, such murders are an ordinary part of life for Mexico's reporters. The country is now one of the world's most dangerous for journalists. Rodriguez had worked for El Diario Newspaper in Cd. Juarez, the heart of Mexico s drug war. No one knows who murdered Rodriguez, but it is obvious those behind Rodriguez's death clearly intended to frighten journalists, newpapers and electronic news outlets into avoiding coverage of cartel crime and terrorism. The implications are enormous. If reporters like Armando Rodriguez can be silenced without punishment, Mexican civil society will be forced accept the cartels' version of reality. Angered by India s over cautious approach Tibet has been an emotional issue for India, especially after Dalai Lama fled here in 1959. Walking the diplomatic tight rope Nehru cited his decision to give asylum as a sentimental move and not political. Since then political realities have changed. China has emerged is the new Asian giant that every nation wants to befriend and not annoy, so does India. Our relations with China have improved and even our bilateral trade is improving. Why should we spoil this developing relationship by raising an issue which everyone else has given up? Why should India choose to fight for Tibetan independence when Dalai Lama himself is ready to settle down with autonomy under the Chinese. Last month Britain dealt the Tibetans a deadly blow by announcing unconditional recognition of China's absolute authority over Tibet. Either ways an Independent or an autonomous Tibet is an outdated concept, no use beating the dead horse. Kenya eyes Telemedicine Telemedicine is not a common term in the Kenyan medical sector however not so new.And with the escalating cases of misdiagnosis in Kenyan hospitals, telemedicine has been cited as the only way to bring to an end such cases. This year, Kenya has had three major cases of amputation because of wrong treatment. There have been unreported cases of deaths especially among children, after doctors administered drugs without identifying the real cause of the children s illnesses. The plan involves connecting all hospitals in Kenya with the Internet, partly to help doctors make informed diagnoses and even consult their colleagues via secured Internet traffic before they administer any drugs. With the new initiative, doctors manning rural dispensaries will be able to order medical supplies directly from the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa) at the touch of a button. This will largely benefit rural areas which have had a history of poor medical coverage. http://www.instablogs.com

Year after year these heros face down the US government as they tour America, gathering the supplies, and then blatantly take another shipment across the border to deliver it to the Cuban people. Steve weaves their story in with glimpses of a Cuba Americans are prohibited by our own government from seeing. http://www.ifconews.org Be the Media! Little Angel

Little Angel

In late 2006, the partners of Blockade got together and decided that we needed a proof of concept to support the idea of using game engines and assets to produce linear animated content. We had access to Gearbox's "Brothers in Arms" game assets, so the decision was made to produce a short film set in WWII. Working with Rhythm and Hues writer/director Bill Kroyer, our production team was given some very tight parameters for its production: 30 days for production, from concept to delivery in HD, using the Brothers in Arms assets but re-purposing the assets to look nothing like the game, and using a team of only eight people. The goal was to showcase a range of emotions, dramatic tension and top 3D animation within a pre-existing game environment under normal TV restraints. In short, we played to our weaknesses, so that we knew where to build for strength in the future. The Little Angel project taught us that the game engines and assets were extremely limited when it came to facial animation - something we have since improved upon. Beyond that, we saw only huge opportunity before us. We are proud of Little Angel as our first effort, and believe that it will come to represent a notable benchmark in animation.

Grannies and Grandpas Shut Down Military Recruiters in Portland Oregon

Grannies and Grandpas Shut Down Military Recruiters in Portland Oregon

from Change the Future on April 04, 2007
Duration: 821
Today, March 30, 2007, members of the Portland Community opposing the war in Iraq protested the military recruiters office on NE Broadway. When I arrived, there were about 20 people present and three elders in rocking chairs blocking the doorways, refusing entry at one point to an 18 years old who had an appointment inside. The young man was affable and not at all enraged or indignant about being refused admittance, though the same could not be said for Officer Schaffer who verbally engaged the protesters for several minutes before pushing elders aside to gain entry both in and out of the offices. This officer, though short of abusive, insisted repeatedly that the young man had the Constitutional right to make the choice to enter the building and serve his country. Though the officer was able to physically push his way past the Grannie blockade, the young man showed much more respect and consideration for those who were trying to save his life, or protect him from contributing to the massive war crimes being committed daily in Iraq. On hand was Col. Ann Wright (ret.) a 29 year Army veteran and diplomat who resigned in opposition to the invasion of Iraq, local members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Pace, Chapter 72, Code Pink for Peace, and Portland Peaceful Response Coalition. Ann Wright was an inspirational speaker who engaged the crowd a couple of times, offering her perspective and her experiences with the resistance to the war taking place in Washington D.C. The 13 1/2 minute video includes a 5 minute or so interview with her as well as footage of the arrests. Two officers eventually appeared and queried the grannies blocking the door if they intended to get arrested. They replied that they would not remove their rocking chairs from the doorways. The officers left, but returned with reinforcements, who arrested the elders seated in their rocking chairs, cuffed them and escorted them to the car, amidst cheers and refrains from, "we shall overcome." Another small group of protesters entered the building from a side doors, which quickly brought officers to that part of the building. Two or three of this number exited the building, while one woman was arrested and escorted to jail. I think the total was five arrests. I don't know the count, but during the three month campaign, scores of elders have been arrested, and insist that these weekly blockades will continue until the Occupation is ended. This, as with the weekly www.defundthewar.com campaign at the offices of Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith, is an ongoing presence for Peace in Portland Oregon. We can all do something!
