Jeremy Scahill: Blackwater in Iraq
from Speaker's Forum Podcast June 27, 2008
A former Navy SEAL founded Blackwater Lodge in rural North Carolina in 1997. At first, the company trained local police. But after September 11th, government spending on security spiked and Blackwater USA grew. By 2003, the company had government contracts worth millions, mostly to protect the top U.S. ambassador in Iraq. Now, Blackwater's army rivals that of a small nation. Journalist Jeremy Scahill has tracked Blackwater's rise. He calls the Iraq War the most radically privatized war in U.S. history. Jeremy Scahill has reported from Iraq, Yugoslavia and New Orleans for Democracy Now! and The Nation. His latest book is Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army. He spoke at Town Hall in Seattle on June 18, 2008.

Blackwater and the Private War on Terror
from Weekday Podcast June 18, 2008
On September 16, 2007, Blackwater security guards opened fire in a crowded Baghdad square and killed 17 people. A military investigation found all those killed were civilians and the shooting was unprovoked. Yet it's unclear if any of the shooters will stand trial. Jeremy Scahill, muckraker for The Nation, is here to explain why. Blackwater security guards protect U.S. officials in Iraq, and the State Department says the Iraq mission would be impossible without them. But Blackwater isn't just in Iraq. Jeremy Scahill investigates the company as it enters new markets and provides 'CIA type services' to private corporations. Blackwater and the privatization of the global War on Terror, on the next Weekday.

Barack Obama Pins Bush Economic Woes On John McCain & It Looks Like A Good Fit
from RetroVision Media June 10, 2008
The highlights are: A. Barack Obama's promises to Israel that he may have a difficult time honoring in the future. B. Barack Obama fires first salvo across John McCain's economic bow while only receiving harmless smoke and mirrors in return. Obama has successfully pinned the Bush administration's economic woes on McCain like a tail on the donkey. From our view, he wears it well. C. Country bracing for higher fuel and food prices as farmers fear modest crops this year. With Ben Bernanke signaling an end to rate cuts to stem inflation, the country is in for a rough ride.

RetroVision Theater Presents Held for Ransom 1938
from RetroVision Media June 06, 2008
Blanche Mehaffey heads the cast as FBI agent Betty Mason. At the risk of her own neck, Betty pursues the kidnappers of a wealthy businessman. She also juggles the affection of her partner Morrison (Jack Mulhall) and the victim's son Scott (Grant Withers). After five yarn-provoking reels, the film finally roars into life with a truly exciting climactic shootout. Though Blanche Mehaffey had been in films since the silent days, she never quite attained stardom, and was still being referred to as an "unknown" by the 1938 trade papers. Despite the description, this is not a bad movie.

RetroVision Media's Analysis of Obama's Win and Clinton's Refusal To Concede
from RetroVision Media June 04, 2008
Barack Obama, the nominee of the Democratic Party as of last night’s final primary contest, awakens this morning to the nightmare of a shotgun wedding with Hillary Clinton as his running mate. After clearing every hurdle to achieve what no person of color, man or woman has in the history of American politics, he now has to find a way to placate a bunch of self-centered losers from forcible glomming on to his success. Hillary Clinton failed to do the right thing, the stand up thing, and the proper thing by congratulating Barack Obama on winning the needed number of delegates to capture the nomination. Intentionally, she snatched the door open to hijack her way back into the White House by hanging on to Obama’s coattails. Somehow, she has deluded herself and the fringe element within her core support that the Obama camp gives a rat’s ass about what she wants. America is a country that loves a winner and shuns its losers. There is little room for disgruntled second place finishers.

RetroVision Theater Presents The Lady Says No
from RetroVision Media June 04, 2008
The lady of the title is author Dorinda Hatch (Joan Caulfield), who writes a scathing best-seller in which she trashes all men. Photographer Bill Shelby (David Niven) vows to make Dorinda eat her words, thereby proving the superiority of the male of the species. Suffice to say that he doesn't succeed--at least until the very, very end. The middle portion of The Lady Says No consists of a surrealistic dream sequence in which Dorinda realizes that she loves Bill despite his rampant chauvinism. This film is not a likely candidate for screening at the next N.O.W. meeting. Lady Says No was produced and directed by Frank Ross, who at the time was married to star Joan Caulfield.
