Diafora from Robert White on Vimeo. Fusing Video, Time-Lapse and Still Photography, Diafora is a film which places an equal response for the creation of a meaning on the viewers, as well as the makers. The interplay between music and image is never prescriptive, requiring the audience to bring their own interpretative powers to mix. This open-ended approach to the meaning of the film allows it work on several levels; should the audience member choose, then the film can be viewed on a purely aesthetic level, enjoying the atmosphere created through colour and composition of the images, the changing soundtrack, and the combination of these through editing. When the audience decides to take a more active role in their viewing, they are give the choice of either attempting to decode the filmmakers' intentions, or allowing their own interpretations to form. Mevlana (Rumi) said 'from emotion, thought and enthusiasm I beget my being' nearly 830 years ago. Today 9 echoes, remembers, confides in Mevlana. His version of the Map of the Universe is incomparably accurate both in word + image, sound + image correlations. Despite the 8 centuries between his book Mesnevi and Map of the Universe in sound . Yes, he has mapped the Universe. A low-fi acoustic performance of a part from the 9th song of the album; Hypnotic serves as the base of a few poems from Mevlana, translated in today's terms.

James Toback spoke with Cinematical at Cannes about the genesis of the project, the challenges of dealing with Tyson as a subject instead of as a friend, and about the ongoing negotiations with his 8-year old son over a possible part in his next film. An interloping parrot chashes the party, apparently determined to have the guest of honor as a snack. But the audience is not about to give up the object of their collective affection so easily, and one heroic bug manages to torch the parrot's tail and rescue the damsel in distress, which is, of course, a good excuse to continue the fiesta on into the night. Freling did partial remake of this cartoon the following year with flies and a spider standing in for the roaches and parrot in Bingo Crosbyana (1936). (IMDb)
