Filed marks for the male Mallard are the green head and white neck-ring. This is not their normal habitat but when the temperature turns bitter cold and the local ponds freeze, the ducks swim by.

Field mark for this dovelike gull is the black ring encircling the bill. Notice the pale greenish legs (not pink) of the one walking on the rock.

In mid autumn there are not as many shorebirds around. On a sunny day there are always seagulls. This common ring-billed gull is marked by the black ring encircling the bill.
