Cormorant shakes off the water

After having spent the last half-hour diving underwater catching fish, this Double-Crested Cormorant takes a break on a nearby rock. Cormorants around here are often seen standing erect, neck in an S curve and wings spread. This one vigorously shakes off the water for the quick dry. The field mark for this bird is the orange-yellow gular pouch.

Great Egret shows off some fishing skills

On the north shore of the Long Island Sound near the Thmble Islands, this Great Egret looks for food and then catches a fish for dinner. This white heron primarily eats aquatic life and a sunny, warm, late afternoon low-tide is pretty good for catching fish. We know this is a Great Egret due to the yellow bill and the long black legs.
