MWV Episode 16 – Canary in a Coal Mine from MicrobeWorld Video on May 01, 2008 33 views
Coral reefs are dying a death of a thousand cuts and their disappearance threatens not only the incredibly diverse ecosystem that depends on them, but also human health and welfare. In this episode of MicrobeWorld Video marine scientists Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Ph.D., chair of marine studies at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia,, and Kiho Kim, Ph.D., director of the environmental studies program at American University, explain the important relationship between microbes and corals, and how this delicate symbiosis that sustains life on and around reefs is facing numerous threats from human interactions to global climate change. In addition, Tundi Agardy, Ph.D., founder and executive director of Sound Seas, discusses the need for public policy and community-based conservation efforts that may help stave off the degradation of these vital ocean ecosystems. According to a 2004 report issued by the World Wildlife Fund, 24% of the world s reefs are under imminent risk of collapse through human pressures; and a further 26% are under a longer term threat of collapse. If nothing is done to protect these resources, many scientists estimate that reefs around the West Indies in the Caribbean will be gone by 2020, while the Great Barrier Reef may only last for another three decades. The Mixed-Up World of Senator Chuck Grassley from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) on April 27, 2008 18 views
US Senator Charles 'Chuck' Grassley (Iowa) is one of the biggest boosters for government subsidies to encourage farmers to grow corn for use as fuel for cars and trucks. Food-for-fuel policies are among the causes of the recent price rises in food prices that is causing hunger and misery among the world's poorest people. This video shows the two sides of Chuck Grassley. First, speaking at a Baptist meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, he says that "turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to world hunger exposes the selfish side of human nature." Grassley then reveals his own selfish side by vigorously defending the crops-for-fuel subsidies during a telephone news conference with agriculture reporters. Defying all economic logic, Grassley denies any link between the diversion of millions of acres of farm land for growing fuel and the rising price of corn and other staple commodities.Grassley is a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee that is currently writing the US farm bill and the Senate Finance Committee that grants tax breaks to ethanol producers and maintains a high import tariff against ethanol from outside the US.As well as being a Senator, he is also a corn farmer from Iowa, the biggest producer of corn-based-ethanol in the US. So that may explain it. Good old pork barrel politics.

Cement - A Dirty Business from KQED's QUEST Science Radio Podcast on April 08, 2008 45 views
Thought California has consigned coal-burning to the scrap bin? Think again! California has 11 coal-fired power plants, all used to heat limestone into cement making us one of the biggest cement-producing states in the country. In addition to cement, these kilns produce 95% of the state's airborne mercury pollution and 2% of its greenhouse gas emissions. Mostly, they've slipped under the radar of regulators, but that is changing fast.

World Wheat Crisis from Global Pulse on April 02, 2008 54 views
In the U.S., pastries may cost a few pennies more. But in Pakistan and Egypt, soaring wheat prices have caused bread riots, and in the poorest countries, babies will starve. The wheat crisis is caused by a nexus of factors - drought in Australia, growing demand in Asia, market speculation, and even the use of food to make biofeuls. The effects make clear that the global economy is, for some, a trap they cannot see, or escape.
