McClellan: White House gave FOX commentators talking pointsMcClellan: White House gave FOX commentators talking points

This just in from the Department of the Obvious: Scott McClellan admits to Chris Matthews that the White House made a deliberate effort to use FOX News commentators like Sean Hannity and Bill O Reilly to disseminate White House talking points. Download | Play Download | Play Matthews: Did you see FOX television as a tool when you were in the White House? As a useful avenue to get your message out? McClellan: I make a distinction between the journalists and the commentators. Certainly there were commentators and other, pundits at FOX News, that were useful to the White House. [ ] That was something we at the White House, yes, were doing, getting them talkng points and making sure they knew where we were coming from. Matthews: So you were using these commentators as your spokespeople. McClellan: Well, certainly. Straight from the source. Enough with the fair and balanced crap already.

Bill O Reilly has officially lost it. In his warped little mind, bloggers who organize and engage in public advocacy for causes they believe in like universal healthcare and an end to unnecessary and dumb wars are the same as Klansmen who used to lynch black people. Seriously. How can you logically make that connection? Dumb question. Download | Play Download | Play Obama must condemn organizations like MoveOn and DailyKos if he truly wants to run without a race component. These are the people who are dividing Americans along racial lines. It is not a stretch to say MoveOn is the new Klan. Here s a fun game to play in comments, kids. Hip-hop artist Nas is protesting Fox News's coverage of Barack Obama. The rapper joined members of the activist groups MoveOn.org and ColorofChange.org to deliver more than 600,000 petitions Wednesday to the network's New York City headquarters. Nas, whose new album Untitled was released last week, said in a statement that "Fox poisons the country with racist propaganda and tries to call it news." The network responded by saying, "Fox News believes in all protesters exercising their right to free speech including Nas who has an album to promote." Fox also noted that its anchor Bill Hemmer was scheduled to interview Obama this weekend. Last month, Fox News referred in a graphic to Michelle Obama, the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, as "Obama's baby mama." Later, the network said a producer "exercised poor judgment" during the segment. source Nas on The Colbert Report Pt. 2 (Interview) Nas on The Colbert Report Pt. 3 (Sly Fox Performance)

BillO is such a mighty man. He sneered at the LA media critics since they are far left loons how empowering that must be. And he feels so bad for Karl Rove being asked to testify in front of the House Subcommittee about his involvement in the Donald Siegelman case. Since Rover is on the FOX team now, there s really no point to all that malarkey and it s all about dogs. I think . Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) As was reported on 60 Minutes: Now a Republican lawyer from Alabama, Jill Simpson, has come forward to claim that the Siegelman prosecution was part of a five-year secret campaign to ruin the governor. Simpson told 60 Minutes she did what’s called “opposition research” for the Republican party. She says during a meeting in 2001, Karl Rove, President Bush’s senior political advisor, asked her to try to catch Siegelman cheating on his wife. [..] She says she spied on Siegelman for months but saw nothing. Even though she was working as a Republican campaign operative, Simpson says she wanted to talk to 60 Minutes because Siegelman’s prison sentence bothers her conscience. Simpson says she wasn’t surprised that Rove made this request. Asked why not, she tells Pelley, “I had had other requests for intelligence before.” “From Karl Rove?” Pelley asks. “Yes,” Simpson says. I did enjoy Rove calling himself SATAN. Yea, that fits. The Factor Man didn t seem to know anything about the case and didn t bother to tell his audience what it was about as he stumbled with Don s name. Hey, Bill, does this seem like a legitimate reason to call your hero in to answer a few questions? Do you think Rove might have turned his life into a nightmare? O Reilly: They gave you a hard time about not wanting to go testify..uh..in front of the House Subcommittee about Don..Donald Siegelman you know, now who in their right mind, and I m, this is a non-partisan thing, who in their right mind would want to go in to a House committee, which is just a dog and pony show, trying to embarrass whoever it is, you, me whoever has to go, who in their right mind would want to do that? They wouldn t. They won t come on this program, most of those pinheads. Okay. So they give me a hard time about that, and, I guess they re giving you a hard time because you worked in the Bush administration and now you work at FNC? Rove: Yeah, yeah uh well on the first one, you know they were completely, and a lot of the questions were polite, but they were clearly ill informed. They said why don t, why don t you refuse to testify. I said look I ve not invoked any privilege, the White House has invoked privilege. The White House has invoked an Executive privilege to Constitutional authority of the President not to have his aides drawn up to the Hill for any reason that they want and I said but I have been five times offered, through my lawyer to meet with Democrat members, Democrat staff, Republican members, Republican staff, or answer in writing questions that they might want to submit about this in order to preserve the President s prerogatives of separation of powers, while at the same time giving them information that they supposedly want and not foreclosing any options. Non-partisan thing .It s non-partisan to refuse to testify for entrapping a governor to ruin his career so he ends up in jail for no reason.

Why would BillO try to smear Jesse, aren t they old friends? I think not. As he admits, The Factor has attacked looked at him repeatedly including investigating his finances, I mean they were only holding him accountable like they do Bush and Cheney, weren t they? Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) Bill: but we are not out to hurt the man in personal ways. Yea, investigating his finances is soooo impersonal. You see that separates Bill from the vicious media. We lie about Conservatives and Republicans, nut he s a really a fair guy when it comes to liberals and Democrats. Okie Dokie. Rachel Maddow does a segment on Bill s presentation of the Jackson/Obama comment. The part where he says he won t speculate on Jesse s motivations, but then almost immediately he does just that. Flippity-floppity I seem to remember a time when Jesse Jackson quizzed Bill about his Sylvia s restaurant statements. What concerns me is that fear and ignorance, you know, lead to hatred and leads to violence, obviously. And so, to underestimate the civility of blacks was insulting to many people.

Jesse Jackson: "I Wanna Cut Obama's Nuts Off" [VideUhOh]Jesse Jackson: "I Wanna Cut Obama's Nuts Off" [VideUhOh]
from Gawker
July 09, 2008

Bill O'Reilly just aired the much-hyped but apparently very brief video Fox News has of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson saying he wants to "cut [Barack Obama's] nuts off." It sounds like Jackson is upset over the Democratic presidential candidate's position on faith-based federal initiatives. But that's beside the point. First off, what left-wing political activist worth his salt whispers sensitive, private thoughts like these while fully mic-ed at a Fox News affiliate? More to the point, did Jackson learn absolutely nothing from the "Hymietown" fiasco in 1984, when he tried to make off-the-record remarks about Jews in New York to reporters on a campaign airplane flight? Anyway, Jackson has already apologized, and the two guests brought on by O'Reilly didn't think it was a big deal (one because Jackson already apologized, and one because he argues Jackson's not taken seriously anymore anyway) . Video of Jackson's comments and text of his apology are after the jump. UPDATE: O'Reilly also said Fox News has audio of Jackson that is "more damaging that what you heard" but won't air it because it's not relevant and the sensitive network is not out to get Jesse Jackson. Video after the jump. UPDATE 2: Also, Michelle Obama used to babysit Jesse Jackson's son when he was a teenager. THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING, etc. Video of Jackson's comments, either above or via this YouTube: Apology: For any harm or hurt that this hot-mic conversation may have caused, I apologize. My support for Sen. Obama's campaign is wide, deep and unequivocal. In case there was any doubt Fox News will be repeating this thing incessantly, O'Reilly played it three times in the first four minutes of his show. Video of O'Reilly saying Fox is holding back footage of Jackson saying even worse things, and speculating that Jackson is scared of Obama winning because if he becomes president that will mean racism is over and Jackson will be out of a job: These guys are such pros at the art of the smear. You just have to watch and learn: First the gossip and insinuation (as with the non-existent Michelle Obama "whitey" video), THEN the goods, which are totally optional since you can do plenty of damage with just the insinuation part.

Bill O'Reilly Falsely Accuses Times Of Caricature [Shouting Heads]Bill O'Reilly Falsely Accuses Times Of Caricature [Shouting Heads]
from Gawker
July 08, 2008

In response to a Times column about Fox News uglifying a picture of reporter Jacques Steinberg and viciously smearing Tim Arango and other journalists, the cable network's chief rageaholic, Bill O'Reilly, is pretending to be pissed at the Times for caricaturing him in the illustration for a 2007 book review. The caricature, he said during his Fox show last night, even included some kind of devil horn (clip after the jump). But O'Reilly's screaming on-air hatefest is the worst sort of act, because if you actually examine the illustration, reproduced after the jump, you notice two things. 1. There is no "horn" attached to O'Reilly. The illustration includes little dialog bubbles, like in comic books, with pointy parts of the bubbles aimed at O'Reilly's mouth. Maybe the host missed that when his producer or whoever briefed him on his outrage during a break. 2. The illustration is by no stretch a caricature, defined by Merriam-Webster as "exaggeration by means of often ludicrous distortion of parts or characteristics." It is a series of straightforward renderings of O'Reilly as he looks on camera. A variety of unnatural colors are used, but not in the service of exaggerating anything about O'Reilly or making him look bad. O'Reilly's ginned up outrage comes from Roger Ailes' mudslinging, dirty-politics playbook. The idea is to attack the critic, as the network did with our own Hamilton Nolan yesterday and as it has been doing with journalists and other targets for years now. But some of O'Reilly's emotion may very well be real: emerging evidence, as reported by Arango and Steinberg, that this old routine is getting boring and driving away viewers is apparently causing some very real panic over at Fox. June 27, 2008

Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) Bill O Reilly has a checkered history with the Peabody Awards. For years, he claimed that his work on Inside Edition garnered two Peabodys, until he was outed by nemesis Al Franken as having confused the Polk Awards (won after O Reilly was no longer with Inside Edition) with the more prestigious Peabodys. Obviously, that kind of public mistake has to smart a man with as big an ego as his mouth. So it is with no little irony to see him mention the Peabodys on his Thursday broadcast, talking about Bill Moyers receiving one. Funny enough, while I can think of no one in journalism more deserving and Moyers has been awarded 10 Peabodys over his career Moyers was not on the list of winners this year. So why the slam on the Peabodys? You may have heard about the Peabody Award, the prestigious prize given by the University of Georgia to journalists. Seems every few minutes our pal Bill Moyers wins one of those. And we re very happy for him. So happy, in fact, that we looked into the political leanings of the Peabody board. Interesting. There are ten liberals on it, two conservatives. Sounds like Newsweek magazine. Horace Newcomb, the director of the Peabody deal, and a Democrat himself, says he s not concerned. Nor are we, because we re sure the judging is fair and balanced. Party on, Peabody guys. Indeed. Actually, there are 16 members of the Peabody panel, not twelve, and their respective political affiliations seems less than obvious by the list, nor particularly relevant to their bona fides as members of the Peabody board. But hey, why deal in facts when you can get a nice little librul conspiracy action working. You know why I think Bill O Reilly s miffed at the Peabodys? Because guess who won a Peabody this year, basically for acting like Bill O Reilly?

Olbermann Lashes Out Over Russert Rumor [Feuds]Olbermann Lashes Out Over Russert Rumor [Feuds]
from Gawker
June 19, 2008

Keith Olbermann's feud with Rupert Murdoch and his News Corp. media properties reached a bitter new milestone today when the MSNBC Countdown host smacked Murdoch's Post for a forthcoming gossip item that will, he said, allege that fellow MSNBC-er Chris Matthews was jockeying to succeed Tim Russert as host of Meet The Press at a memorial event for Russert yesterday. The item will also reportedly say that Olbermann has threatened to quit if he doesn't get Russert's job himself. Olbermann leapt to sometime-rival Matthews' defense, saying the Hardball host was asked by an acquaintance at the event about succession and immediately shut the conversation down. As for himself, Olbermann denied he had demanded to replace Russert and said he was, in any case, unqualified (though any savvy and honest successor would attach that caveat). The Page Six reporter working on the item, Paula Froelich, was awarded Countdown's "Worst Person In The World" title for the night, which will teach her a very important lesson: Do not call TV people for comment until after their shows have aired. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t BillW) Remember Bill Moyers deft handling of Bill O Reilly ambush producer Porter Barry? I couldn t wait to see how Billo would use the footage, knowing full well that he d never allow the unedited version on his show to prove how superior Bill Moyers is professionally, morally, graciousness, and in all other ways to the whole of the FOXNews empire. In fact, for fun, look at the comparison of coverage of this tête-à-tête between Billo and Olbermann, courtesy of FreePress.net. Billo can hardly contain his disdain for the National Conference for Media Reform. The concept of media reform being apparently a radically leftist idea that can only take shape with funding from George Soros and America-haters like MoveOn and Robert Greenwald. (Have I got all the stereotypical smears in?) His proof that they are radical leftists? Their unanimous contempt for FOXNews. (Bill, bubbeleh, NCMR wants to reform the media obviously the biggest violators of the separation between journalism and propaganda showing up to their conference to do the kind of smear job you proved you would do is going to bring out some hostility. I wouldn t be offering you any m-fing iced tea if you showed up on my doorstep either). How can you tell that FOX News has nothing to work with? They bring out the body language expert. They actually try to claim that Moyers was physically dominating Porter Barry by patting him on the shoulder. Scraping the bottom of the barrel, Bill. FreePress s Tim Karr thinks he knows what scares Bill O Reilly so much. During his Wednesday night broadcast Bill O Reilly called Dan Rather s attendance at this week s Minneapolis conference proof positive that the former CBS anchor was farther than far left. These people are crazy! Crazy! O Reilly said of the more than 3,000 people attending the conference. He s hanging with real nuts! Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Bill W) Scott McClellan got the Judge Judy treatment from Bill O Reilly over his new book which rips the Bush administration on a host of issues. In this extended clip, BillO took exception because Scott had the audacity to indict the press over their horrid coverage of the run up to the Iraq war. And poor Bill tries to spin him into the ground over his admissions that the Iraq war was sold to American people using propaganda. (rough transcript) O Reilly: You said they used propaganda and that is a loaded word McClellan: The White House Iraq group, the White House Iraq group was set up, it s a marketing arm for selling the a war. That was a specific purpose that I talked about in the book O Reilly: Because they fervently believed that the guy was a danger and could hand his weapons off. McClellan: No because the President had a bigger driving motivation which was to transform the middle east. O Reilly: You telling me that President Bush didn t believe they had the, McClellan: No, he did too. He believed that too. O Reilly:That s not propaganda then, that s not propaganda. McClellan: It is when you package it all together over sell it and over state it to the American people. That is propaganda. In Bill s mind it s A-OK that the WHIG was formed to set up a one stop shopping mart to shoot war propaganda directly into the veins of the press which would be passed on to fool the American people into thinking we needed to attack Iraq. However, in BillO s mind it was no big thing because Bush felt it justified. Unbelievable. Scotty was unflappable.

If it s true that an unexamined life is not worth living, there has to be a whole sub-corollary that an unexamined life is absolutely necessary for FOXNews pundits. Or we can cut the philosophy and just call Bill O Reilly the most comically hypocritical talking head on the airwaves today. At least, it would be comical if I wasn t afraid he was about to stroke out. Temper, temper. Obviously, He Who Must Not Be Named has gotten under Billo s incredibly thin skin. But rather than call him out directly, O Reilly opts to declare a jihad against the whole of the NBC News Department. Scott McClellan s revelations in his book that he felt the media was too soft on the White House during the run up to the Iraq invasion has given Bill O Reilly the ammunition he imagines he needs to target NBC: Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) O’REILLY: I’ll tell you what, I wouldn’t work, Bernie, and I don’t think you would either—I don’t know about Jane—for any organization like NBC which is in the tank, dishonest, has been dishonest, and doesn’t deserve any credibility. You’re working for them, you’re part of it! You’re part of it! GOLDBERG: What do you want? You want everyone to quit? O’REILLY: Yeah! I would! I would! HALL: Bill, I still think you can differentiate—you never want to hear me say this—I think he will have a tough interview. The Today Show was okay. That’s different from what he’ll hear on MSNBC. I just think there’s a difference there. I know you don’t agree with me. O’REILLY: You’re wrong. There’s no difference. It’s the same guys running both. There’s no difference, Jane. I know who these people are. You gotta make a decision in life. If FOXNews ever did what NBC News is doing. In 12 years, FOXNews has never told me what to say, how to say it, and never allowed any org…any of us…any of us! to go in the tank and attack one candidate and give the other a pass. That’s what they did at NBC. They allowed Hillary Clinton to get carved up, and they let Obama go. That’s a stain that will never go away. First of all, Bernie The 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America Goldberg cannot be described as fair ever from anywhere other than the deepest bowels of BizarroWorld. But for Bill O Reilly to call being in the tank for one candidate and giving the other a pass a stain that will never go away, well, that s some world-class hypocrisy. Bush-Kerry ring a bell, Bill? And please, spare us the no one tells me what to say, we know better than that. Heather included a later portion of the show where O Reilly lambastes the major network anchors for saying that they had all gotten calls from White House officials, unhappy with particular coverage. I love the logic Bill employs: it can t be valid unless Williams, et al., name the officials involved and it can t be that bad, since Bill O Reilly never got a call himself. Hmm I wonder why that is, Bill. Could it be that the White House considered you an ally?

May 23, 2008

It was just a few weeks ago that Barry Nolan of CN8 in Boston thought it was a travesty that Bill O Reilly was being honored at the local Emmy Awards. He was even going to invite Keith Olbermann to the gala event. Download | Play Download | Play (posted BillO/Shawn Hornbeck attack video) I am appalled, just appalled,” Nolan told the Track. “He inflates and constantly mangles the truth . . . and his frequent target is the ‘left-leaning’ media - the ones who do report the news fairly. And those are the same people who will be sitting in the room honoring him.”…read on. O Reilly also attacks children that have been the victims of pedophiles also which got him kicked out of a speaking engagement in Naples, Florida for The National Center for Missing Kids. But hey, C Their take is that I was insubordinate, Nolan told us yesterday. They wanted me to sit down and shut up. The host of Backstage With Barry Nolan had argued that O Reilly, the volatile Fox News host and former Channel 7 anchor, was unworthy of the Governor s Award. (Past recipients include the likes of Mike Wallace, Ken Burns, and Natalie Jacobson.) The idea of honoring someone who does their job with constant factual errors, name-calling, and mangling of the truth . . . It s ridiculous, said Nolan We re told Nolan was warned by his bosses at CN8 to pipe down, but at the May 10 dinner honoring O Reilly he handed out a six-page document listing some of O Reilly s wackier errors, utterances, and information about the talk-show host s sexual harassment settlement. Seems Comcast was concerned that Nolan s actions could harm the network s relationships with the academy and Fox. He was immediately suspended without pay for two weeks and then fired over the phone Tuesday. CN8 spokeswoman Beth Bacha wouldn t say much yesterday, but she did confirm that Nolan is no longer employed by Comcast. I wonder if Murdoch s threats to NBC and GE over KO s treatment of BillO has been extended to all that would be critics of The Factor man. On the surface, O Reilly s charges revolve around GE s history of doing business with Iran. But the attacks grow out of an increasingly bitter feud between O Reilly and the company s high-profile subsidiary, NBC, one that has triggered back-channel discussions involving News Corp. owner Rupert Murdoch, Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes, NBC chief executive Jeff Zucker and General Electric s CEO, Jeffrey Immelt. Ailes called Zucker on his cellphone last summer, clearly agitated over a slam against him by MSNBC host Keith Olbermann. According to sources familiar with the conversation, Ailes warned that if Olbermann didn t stop such attacks against Fox, he would unleash O Reilly against NBC and would use the New York Post as well. Both Fox and the Post are owned by Murdoch, who complained about Olbermann s conduct in separate calls to Zucker and Immelt. The high-level appeals failed, and O Reilly has escalated his criticism of GE in recent weeks, declaring, If my child were killed in Iraq, I would blame the likes of Jeffrey Immelt. read on
