Review: Pirate Radio

Tethered to reality by only a slender thread, Pirate Radio quickly cuts loose and floats off into its own imaginary layer of the Earth's atmosphere, where only good-hearted, pleasant-thinking, die-hard romantics can survive. Welcome home, Richard Curtis, where have you been? Writer/director Curtis rose to fame on the basis of his screenplay for Four Weddings and a Funeral, featuring an ensemble of quirky yet appealing men and women chasing love and happiness, followed, notably, by his script for Notting Hill, but he's been writing off-kilter comedy sketches and episodic television for many years. Pirate Radio proves that his gift for writing witty one-liners and creating funny situations remains intact. His skills as a film director and shaper of material are a little more fuzzy and undefined, however. As with Love, Actually, his previous directorial effort, Pirate Radio (AKA The Boat That Rocked) is filled with episodes that feel randomly assembled, knit together by proximity and happenstance more than narrative necessity. For all the laughter and positive feelings that Pirate Radio generates, it's a lightweight treatment of a potentially heavyweight subject.Filed under: Comedy, Music & Musicals, New Releases, Theatrical Reviews, Focus FeaturesContinue reading Review: Pirate Radio Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Pirate Radio' Salutes Rebel Rock Broadcasters

Filed under: News, Movies While the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks and the Who may have all ruled US airwaves in the '60s, the UK played only an hour or two of rock 'n' roll on the radio each day. Some radio DJs rebelled against the government and broadcasted from boats just off the UK territorial waters, and a new film sheds light on one of these renegade stations. Robert Curtis -- writer and director of 'Love Actually' and screenwriter of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Notting Hill' -- dug deep into his childhood and wrote and directed his new comedy, 'Pirate Radio.' The film follows an eclectic group of rock DJs who broadcast live 24/7 from an old tanker that's been anchored in the North Sea and fight to stay on the air despite the British government's plans to shut them down.

A feature-length adaptation of the classic Japanese manga, Astro Boy now comes equipped with a recycling message, both in its story and with its screenplay. Parts feel pieced together here and there from other, better, sometimes darker films, aligning the film itself less with our young protagonist and his knack for salvaging old robots and more with the villain's ability to simply assimilate other devices until it becomes one ungainly mass. That said, there's plenty of color and spunk to keep the kids interested; they'll just have to wade through some atonal waters in order to get to the fun.Filed under: Action, Animation, Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Theatrical Reviews, Family Films, Comic/Superhero/GeekContinue reading Review: Astro Boy Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Pirate Radio' Star Tom Sturridge Snubbed Paul McCartney

Filed under: News, Exclusive, Holy Hell, Movies British movie hunk Tom Sturridge may have grown up listening to the Beatles but his true allegiance lies more with sports stars than music icons. At the recent London premiere for his film 'Pirate Radio,' which tells the story of a band of DJs broadcasting a British radio station aboard a ship, Sturridge literally brushed Sir Paul McCartney aside to meet his Irish rugby idol. "During the premiere of 'Pirate Radio,' I met Paul McCartney which was kind of cool," Sturridge tells Spinner. "He tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Hey, loved your film,' but there was this guy at the premiere called Brian O' Driscoll who is the captain of the Irish rugby team. [O'Driscoll] was standing behind Paul and I literally had to push Paul McCartney aside because Brian O' Driscoll is probably one of the greatest heroes of my life! Now Paul doesn't like me and didn't like that, so we're not going to be having dinner together anytime soon. I was a Beatles fan but Irish rugby is very important to me."

Pirate Radio is the high-spirited story of how 8 DJs love affair with Rock n Roll changed the world forever. In the 1960s this group of rouge DJs, on a boat in the middle of the Northern Atlantic, played rock records and broke the law all for the love of music. The songs they played united and defined an entire generation and drove the British government crazy. By playing Rock n Roll they were standing up against the British government who did everything in their power to shut them down. The band of rebels is lead by The Count, played by the Academy Award Winning Philip Seymour Hoffman, Quentin the boss of Radio Rock, Gavin the greatest DJ in Britian, Midnight Mark, Doctor Dave and Young Carl who comes of age amidst the chaos of sex, drugs and rock n roll. The film features an unbelievable selection of music including The Beatles, The Stones, Beach Boys, Dusty Springfield, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Smokey Robinson, David Bowie, Otis Redding, Cat Stevens just to name a few. The film is laugh out loud funny and speaks to the rock n roll rebel in all of us.
