People who reach bigg success aren t constrained by the same forces we are. Baloney! It s a myth that we all aren t constrained in the same ways. But there s a bigg difference between the average Joe or Jane and people who ultimately reach bigg success. ___ ___ Remove the constraints! The average person gives in to those constraints. Bigg goal-getters don t see themselves as constrained so they don t allow themselves to be constrained. They don t waste time telling themselves all of the reasons why they can t do something. They focus, instead, on why they can do it and how they will get it done. There s a key lesson for us: By changing your focus from can t to can you open your mind to all sorts of possibilities. Your mind follows your lead Your mind will let you take it wherever you want. Think about why something can t be done and your mind will come up with all kinds of reasons to prove you right! Think about how it can be done and your mind will start figuring out any number of ways to overcome every challenge that holds others back. Sure, some ideas won t work out. You won t care. You know one of them will lead you to bigg success. But if you never get out of the gate if you just assume that you can t win the race you won t. The first part of the killer combo: Child-like imagination People who reach bigg success dream bigg. You must dream again. You must dream the kind of dreams you dreamed when you were young. Your dreams probably won t be exactly the same as they were then. But they will be as bigg as the dreams you saw through the eyes of a child. When the world was your oyster. When there was nothing you couldn t do. When you could imagine all of the bigg things that you would accomplish. When you knew that nothing could stop you. When you couldn t wait to grow up so we could get to all these wonderful ideas. The second part: Experiential wisdom But you re not a child anymore and that s good. You re better equipped now to achieve your bigg dreams than you were then. Combine that child-like imagination with the wisdom you have gained from your experiences. Together, they will help you achieve things that other people only fantasize about, if they allow themselves to think about them at all. That s the difference. That s why you should celebrate your age. You have gained an asset that you didn t have when you were young. You have learned from your experiences, haven t you? Celebrate them! Take joy in all of them the good, the bad and the ugly! You have the killer combination to achieve bigg success! Because of it, the possibility of achieving the impossible is more probable! Believe But too much of the time, we don t think about that. We stopped dreaming bigg dreams. We accepted being average and ordinary. Deep in your soul, you know that you re excellent and extraordinary. You have to believe again! Believe that you can achieve what you can conceive! Then find a way to do it. It only takes one person discovering one way to do anything that s never been done before. Then people marvel at the accomplishment. You re still the one! You are that one person! You were born to dream bigg dreams. You know it because you ve done it. You were born to be excellent and extraordinary. But first you must remove the limits that keep you from dreaming bigg. Dream. Then think of ways to make your dream your reality. Believe that you will win. Did you hear that? You will win. You will achieve your dream. You re still the one! Now, take action and you ll be a bigg success! ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Why Your Partner Must be Two Faced

Bigg Success is two years old today! What a two years it has been! Over the past two years, you ve given us two thumbs up in so many ways. You ve made us one of the regularly featured business career podcasts in iTunes. You ve helped us grow the number of people who visit our site every day. ___ ___ Bigg Success is not a two-seater. We love to hear from you. We re so happy that you ve been here to share your thoughts with us over the past two years. Because it takes two to tango. We couldn t do this if it weren t for you. We thank you so much for all your support. Bigg success is life on your own terms. It s two for the price of one here. We feel so fortunate to be able to work together. That s life on our own terms! Now on to the topic of today s post. There s a two-step in selecting your partner or partners. We got lucky on this one, even though we had two left feet! It naturally happened for us. But don t follow our lead. You probably want to be more intentional. There s a dichotomy at play your partnership must be two-faced. The first face: You and any partner should be like two peas in a pod. Partners must share the same vision and values or they will constantly be at odds with each other. For example, business partners must agree on whether you re in business to create current income or to build long-term wealth. Your strategies will be quite different with these two different visions of success. You also have to share core values. You will face some tough decisions on the path to bigg success. Partners with different core values may respond differently. The second face: Two heads are better than one. It s important to have a shared vision. It s important to have the same core values. However, if you share too many characteristics, your partnership will likely fail. You want a partner with complementary skills. If you both have the same talents and strengths, you would probably be better off with a different partner. There won t be much synergy in your relationship. You also want a partner with a different point-of-view. You want someone who takes a different approach. Otherwise, neither of you gets a critical review of your ideas. You needlessly waste time and money because your bad ideas don t get filtered out before you take action on them. We think these principles apply to any partnership. You can extend it as far as you want. It may apply to your partner in life, a partner in business, key employees or a joint venture partner on a specific project. The key to building partnerships that aren t two-dimensional is to understand this dichotomy when you select a partner. It s critical for creating synergy which multiplies your results more than two-fold. Get this right and you ll get two tickets to paradise partnership paradise, that is. And that s bigg success! Put in your two cents worth anytime. Review our show in iTunes. Leave a comment. E-mail us at bigginfo@biggsuccess.com. Call us at 888.455.BIGG (2444). 5 Steps to Become a Star

U2 is on tour again. They re playing at sold-out stadiums and getting rave reviews. Before a crowd of 60,000 people in Norman, Oklahoma recently, lead singer Bono said something we found particularly interesting, It took us 26 years to travel one mile. ___ ___ He was referring to the band s 1983 performance at the Lloyd Noble Center. There were four to five times as many people in the crowd this time compared to a quarter century earlier. Becoming a star takes a lot of time and hard work Is there another alternative? We heard this story about U2 through a great post by Kris Dunn, the hr capitalist. He said that there is another way: instead of working your butt off, you can eliminate everything that doesn t lead to bigg success. (Okay, we ve paraphrased what he said a little bit!) The problem with the second choice is that it s often hard to know, in advance, what will ultimately lead you to the success of which you dream. You may unwittingly eliminate the thing that will put you over the edge. And we re not talking about The Edge from U2! Overnight success is a misperception Internationally best-selling author Chris Brogan (we love adding that tag to his name) has a great series of posts on being an overnight success. He says in the first one: Overnight success doesn t sleep in. Overnight success doesn t watch a lot of TV. Overnight success doesn t have a whole lot of hobbies right now. We live in a society where we think overnight success is a reality. The problem is that it s almost always a misperception. We need to look behind-the-scenes where bigg success is created. Let s shed some light on becoming a star: Find your delight. Bigg success is life on your own terms. So set your terms and get started on the path to bigg success. But remember that, since you re setting the terms, bigg success will set the price. Paying the price is much less of a burden if you re doing what you love. Keep your eyes on your lighthouse. Fair weather or foul, light or dark, you have to keep going. In your darkest moments, the only consolation you may have is that you can still see your lighthouse. Your vision of success can t be taken away from you. Keep focusing on it to keep going. Work by candlelight. There s one simple difference between people who reach bigg success and people who don t. People who reach bigg success are willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Yes, you have to be willing to work hard. Yes, you have to be willing to work in the face of opposition. Even if the power goes out, you ll light some candles so you can keep on keeping on! Highlight what s most important every day. It s easy to get distracted. It s easy to waste time. It s easy to go nowhere. It s hard to focus all your efforts and energy exclusively on what s most important today to move you closer to your dream life. It s hard to keep it in front of you. It s hard to get right into your next task or project when you complete one. Relight your torch every day. Bigg success is a long journey. You have to fuel your fire. You may get your daily mojovation here at Bigg Success. You may meditate. You may listen to great music while you work out. If it works for you, it works. Just do something anything to keep your torch burning. The bottom line is this: Lightweights don t ever get to step into the spotlight. You have to work hard and smart to become a star. You have to persevere if you want to be center stage. And isn t this ironic you have to risk failure to reach bigg success. ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Beware of Being Too Kind to Your Customers

A recent MSNBC article says there aren t many shopaholics left due to the recession. Then it explores how retailers are responding to frugal consumers for the upcoming holiday season, which accounts for up to twenty percent of annual sales for many of them. Last year, holiday sales were down 3.4%. This year, even more Americans are dealing with job loss, fear of job loss, wage cuts, a drop in home prices and a rise in credit card interest rates. ___ ___ So what will consumers do? What s a retailer to do? Working twice as hard but not making anymore Let s start with retailers. Dropping prices to push out inventory has become the norm since last year. Offering extreme discounts is a tactic many will use to try to get customers in their doors. Here s what that means: Let s say you have a product that costs you $10. You normally sell it for $20, leaving you with a $10 profit. You decide to cut your price by 25% to $15. So now you make $5 every time you sell a product. You have to sell twice as much of this item just to make the same amount of money! In this example, we used a product sale to keep it simple. However, many small businesses sell a service. So think about it this way: Carrying forward the numbers above if you cut your hourly rate by 25% you would have to work twice as much but you wouldn t make anymore. Is it worth it? Would you be better served pursuing another strategy? Consumers are more price-sensitive, but value is still king Now, let s look at those customers. Experts cited in the article say consumers will shop for good value on items they want and need. Note the term value , not price. Consumers are more price sensitive than ever. However, because they have been bombarded with super-low prices, they are beginning to think that those products are worthless. Furthermore, they will pass up an offer even if the price seems too good to be true if they think they just don t need the item. If you cut prices too much, you may kill your business by killing your customer with kindness! 3 strategies for a tight-belt economy: Divide your product or service offerings into three categories must have, need and want. In this economy, focus on the must haves. Which customers must have your must have product? Focus most of your efforts here. Is there a way to bundle a need with a must have or a want with a need ? Offer a special deal on the bundle rather than the individual product or service. You may find that you can sell more without having to work a lot harder. Think about your customer s bottom line. How can you add value to your product or service and boost your customer s bottom line at the same time? For example, is there some essential knowledge that you could impart to help your customer use your product or service to save money? If so, they ll be much more likely to buy even now. How are you compelling your customers to buy your products or services? Share that with us by leaving a comment, e-mailing us at bigginfo@biggsuccess.com or leaving a voice message at 888.455.BIGG (2444). We think you re too kind for checking in with us today. 5 Lessons from Baseball to Be a Hero in Business

With Game 6 of the World Series upon us, we found a fascinating article from Time entitled Sport: A Game of Inches. It s from July 1957. ___ ___ It s about George Robert Tebbetts who gave 53 years of his life to Major League Baseball first as a player, then a scout and, finally, the manager of the Cincinnati Redlegs (as the Reds were known at that time). He is better known by his nickname: Birdie. How did he get his nickname? No, it doesn t have anything to do with the use of his middle finger! The article says that his aunt observed that he had lips like a bird. Wikipedia says his aunt said he chirped like a bird. We don t know which source to believe, but they do both agree that his voice was irritating. According to the article, he got thrown out of a game because, as the umpire said, I have a splitting headache and that voice of yours just kills me. Time awarded him the Manager of the Year honor in 1956 because of the way he had turned around his team. There are all kinds of lessons in this article about baseball, of course, but also about leadership, life and entrepreneuring. There are also a number of great quotes by Birdie in this article. Quotes that make you think and quotes that make you realize how colorful he was. Like his scouting report on a young pitcher, where Birdie said, Major league stuff and a great arm. Screwy in the head. Eliminate head and I recommend. Get good surgeon. But our favorite quote is where the title of the article comes from: Baseball is a game of inches a fellow gets up in the ninth and comes through with a liner between third and short he s a hero. Two inches the other way and he s a bum because he hit into a double play. True in baseball. True in life. True in small business and entrepreneuring. So here are 5 lessons from baseball about being a hero in business: Prepare to be a hero You select your bat. You practice and practice and practice some more. You have to know your competition almost as well as you know yourself. Step up to the plate You ll never be a hero if you don t put on your uniform. You ll never be a hero if you don t get out of the dugout. You have to step up to the plate. You have to risk striking out. A lot of people never take their turn at bat. They have ideas but they never act upon them. They spend so much time preparing that they never get in the game. Pick your pitch You won t be a hero if you swing at every pitch. You ll strike out before the right one comes along. Opportunities are all around you. Most of them aren t worth your time. There are prospects you could pursue. Pick the right ones for you, your products or services and your company. There are projects you could initiate. Select the ones that will advance you the furthest toward your goals. Let the rest pass right by. Don t worry about the result When you re up to bat, you don t know where the ball will go when you hit it. You can t worry about that. You just have to focus on hitting it hard. You can t make a prospect say yes. You can give your prospect your best pitch. You can t force an employer to hire you. You can give them every reason to put you on their roster. Heroes know you can t control results. You can only control your activity. So they focus on the activity and let the results take care of themselves. You may not be a hero today but you can rest assured you will be a hero soon. Inch your way forward. Focus on getting a little faster, a little better, a little smarter every time you re at bat. Take away the lessons from failure and success to hit a grand slam the next time out! Are Entrepreneurs Born or Made

It s another age-old nature / nurture question are entrepreneurs born or are they made? Can the essential skills be taught or do you have to learn from experience? ___ ___ There s a great book by Richard Goossen called Entrepreneurial Excellence: Profit From the Best Ideas of the Experts. He s lined up some of the greatest minds on entrepreneurship. He concludes that you can be taught some things but entrepreneuring is mostly learned by doing. The science of entrepreneuring For years now, colleges have been teaching their students the general principles of management. Colleges apply these principles primarily to managing large companies but the same basic tenets are relevant for entrepreneurs. Lessons can also be taken away from people who have succeeded or failed in an entrepreneurial endeavor. You may not get the specifics, but you can come to understand the general principles that helped them reach bigg success. Finally, you can learn to differentiate between a good idea and a good opportunity. There are a lot of good ideas; there are relatively few good opportunities. You can be taught how to determine if your idea is not a good opportunity. The art of entrepreneuring However, nobody can teach you how to identify specific market niches and determine whether or not you can pursue them successfully. Experience is the only teacher of this valuable entrepreneurial trait. You also have to learn how to transform your passion into a valuable tool than can be used to woo customers, employees, vendors, strategic partners, and financiers. This passion will also help you persevere when you face the inevitable obstacles along the way. You also have to develop an innate belief in yourself. Self-confidence grows with education and experience, but you have to be able to draw deep within yourself as well as upon the support of others. Entrepreneurship is part science and part art. Learn as much as you can about the science of entrepreneuring before you launch your business. The art is something you can only learn by dipping your toes in the water. No storm lasts forever. That s just as true of financial storms as it is natural ones. However, in the midst of a storm, that knowledge may not offer much solace. The news has been full of storm clouds. Among other indicators, unemployment is rising. There is one thing you can do to face challenges like this with confidence prepare for it in advance by keeping your options open. Here are four ways to do that: ___ ___ Visibility Insure that people see you doing what you do best. Is your job outbound so you re clearly visible to customers? If so, capitalize on that relationship. Ask them for a brief note about working with you. It will come in handy at your next evaluation or if you need to look for other work. If your job doesn t expose you to anyone outside your company, then work on your visibility. Get involved in your industry. Look for conferences you can attend. Participate in forums and comment on blog posts about your industry. You might even consider starting your own blog to show off your expertise. Volunteer to work for your favorite non-profit. There are many ways to do it. Get started right away if you re not already doing it. And then do a little maintenance reach out in some way every day. Networking It s amazing how many people land a new job through a referral. It s also amazing how much business results from our networks. What about Facebook and Twitter? Have you joined any industry-specific social networking sites? The contacts you make through these sites will be valuable now. They may prove invaluable should you be forced to make a change. How about combining the virtual with the real? Have you registered on Meetup to find out about local events of interest to you? You ll meet some fantastic people while growing your network at the same time. Marketing It begins by positioning yourself. What makes you unique? How can you communicate that? What opportunities play to your core strengths? Is your resume up-to-date? If not, there s no time like the present! Where would you look for a new job? Who would you contact for referrals? For what services would you pay? For example, would you hire a career coach? As you prepare this plan, keep a couple of things in mind. You may spot some problems. That s why you re doing this now. For instance, at what point might you need to find some part-time work or freelance work to pay the bills? Allow for some recovery time. You re human. It will be emotional. Does Your Career Affect Your Lifestyle or Vice Versa?

Here s a story we ve been told our whole life: ___ ___ You choose a career. You get a job. It pays the bills. Life is good. You live happily ever after. If you re lucky. Because If you re lucky, you love your job. If you re lucky, your work is stimulating. If you re lucky, there is room for growth in your chosen career. If you re lucky, you earn enough from your job to support your desired lifestyle. If you re lucky, your job also affords you time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. If you re lucky, you realize that luck is only a small part of all of these things. As the old saying goes, It s better to be lucky than smart. Lifestyle costs affect career decisions However, smart decisions often increase your chances of getting lucky. And who doesn t like to get lucky? You get a job to support your lifestyle. But how does your lifestyle affect your career? If the costs of your lifestyle put too much of a demand on how much you have to make, you may have to take a job that you don t love just to pay for your lifestyle. If your lifestyle consumes every penny you make, you may have to jump at the first offer that comes along instead of being able to select the job that fits you best. You may have to take a job that takes up all of your time. You have no time to do anything else including things you love to do or spending time with people you love. Find harmony between the two The two are completely interdependent. Your career choices affect your lifestyle. That s certainly true. But the piece that s missing is that your lifestyle also affects your career decisions. In other words, how you spend your money may determine how you earn money. Bigg success is life on your own terms. The five elements of bigg success are money, time, growth, work and play. The bigg idea behind bigg success is that there is synergy between these five elements. You are the entrepreneur of your life. It s implicit in our definition of bigg success. You and you alone are in charge. Successful entrepreneurs understand that their business finances and their personal finances are linked. Their business has to make enough money support them. But that s only half the story. They also have to be careful that they don t put too much of a burden on the business with their personal financial decisions. Even if you aren t an entrepreneur in the traditional sense, it s helpful if you see yourself in business for yourself. You may have just one customer your employer. Your lifestyle affects your career and your career affects your lifestyle. Find the harmony between them and you ll find bigg success! ___ Would you like more tips and tools to live your life on your own terms? In addition, it s amazing how much money many of them give to worthy organizations. A frightening affect on your bottom line This was play time for us, but we recommend integrating work and play. While we were there, we saw something that could help you scare up more profit. Like many Haunted Houses, they often had long lines. People waited an hour or more to get in. So they set up two different prices. You could pay the regular price which in this case was $10 and wait in the regular line. Or you could pay a premium their price was $15 and go right to the front of the line. Now you might be thinking, If I had waited an hour and someone got to go through before me, I would just scream! They did a great job with that. They set their lines up so the people in the regular line really wouldn t know that other people were coming in before them. The express line was camouflaged with corn stalks yes, we re in the Midwest so you really couldn t see it from the regular line. But even if they did, everyone had the same opportunity to purchase the higher priced ticket. ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Bigg Success and the 4 Wicked Witches

Once upon a time, in a land of plenty, there lived a young person named Jordan. Every night, Jordan dreamed of growing up and making a bigg difference in the world. This young person dreamed of bigg success. Then one night, Jordan had a haunting dream. In the dream, there were four witches. One by one, these witches cast a spell on Jordan that kept the young person from reaching bigg success. ___ ___ The Wicked Witch of the North First, Jordan dreamed of promotions, money, fame and glory. Jordan seemed to naturally attract all of them. Life was going as planned. One success piled on top of another. Bigg success was surely on its way. Then, right before Jordan s eyes, the Wicked Witch of the North appeared. With black hat bent, the witch spelled out her curse: You have lived a very charmed life. But now you will face a lot of strife. On this day, I will work my magic. The outcome for you will be quite tragic. The road ahead will be quite rocky. I ll take your confidence and make you cocky. In Jordan s dream, the tide quickly turned. Project after project failed. Jordan hadn t done the same level of research before embarking on these projects. People had tried to tell the young person that these projects wouldn t work. Jordan didn t listen because things had always worked out. Jordan s cockiness quickly turned to fear fear of losing it all. The young person was afraid to be found out as a phony someone who was just a fleeting star. But try as Jordan might, the spiral just kept going down. The Wicked Witch of the South In the dream, suddenly there was a pause. Jordan was back in bed. It was as if nothing had happened. That s when the Wicked Witch of the South flew in on a broom. With a loud laugh, she released her curse: You will try and you will fail. You won t stick with it, you will bail. You won t think about trying again. My magic I ll work, you ll think you can t win. Sure enough, Jordan could see his future. The young person put a tremendous effort into making a business work. Things started off just great. Jordan was having fun deciding on the name for the business, selecting a logo, buying furniture and computers and setting up a web site. It was time to take the product to market. But customers didn t jump on board like Jordan thought they would. It was hard work. Money was tight. Jordan decided to give up. The young person decided being an entrepreneur wasn t all it was cracked up to be. Jordan vowed to never take that kind of risk again. The Wicked Witch of the East Jordan was whisked far away. It was morning and the sun was squarely in the young person s eyes. There appeared to be a figure on the path ahead. As Jordan approached, the figure seemed to grow larger and larger. It was the Wicked Witch of the East. Jordan had never seen such a large person. The old witch leaned over the young person and the sun disappeared. The voice sounded like a roar as it barked out this command: Give up, give up, my little one. Before I m through, I ll have my fun. I ll mix up my infamous brew; a little taste I ll give to you. With one taste, on others you ll depend. You won t take charge; it will be your end. Jordan could see the future appearing on the horizon. Bad thing after bad thing happened to the young person. But it was always someone else s fault. Jordan never took responsibility. So the young person never learned from the experience. As time went by, Jordan became more and more dependent on the goodness of others for survival. Jordan screamed out: This is not me, you wicked witch. Depart from here without a glitch. The Wicked Witch of the West In the dream, this witch was gone. Jordan relaxed, prepared to move on. When suddenly, there was a shimmer of light. The Wicked Witch of the West was in sight. At first glance, this witch was rather attractive. A second look, however, revealed the witch s crinkled nose and the large wart on the end of it. The witch screamed out: Hello, hello, my little friend. I m glad we met, best wishes I send. Stick with me and you ll find gold. I ll share the secret and make you bold. Just give to me some of your money. You will be rich, my little honey. There was a piggy bank on the dresser in Jordan s bedroom. The young person cracked it open. The witch held forth an open hand as Jordan placed the money in it. Then the witch cried out: I waved my wand with my wrist. Now you think you will get rich. You silly fool, do you not know? I will gain; you ve lost your dough. Jordan woke up in a sweat and realized it was all just a nightmare. It was still dark outside. The clock struck midnight the witching hour. Jordan didn t care. This young person wasn t scared of wicked witches. It was time to go back to sleep; time to dream of the bigg success to come. And Jordan lived happily ever after. ___ Would you like more tips and tools to live your life on your own terms? This is our second installment of Music Lessons. Today, we re going to look at a song by Sister Hazel. Their tour starts today so Hazel Nuts are going gaga. Their new album, Release, has been a hit. It s the #1 rock album in iTunes. ___ ___ But our focus today is on an older song of theirs, Change Your Mind. Want to feel better about today? Then change your mind! That s the general message of the song. It sounds so simple, but it really is a great prescription. The song starts out, Did you ever think there might be another way to just feel better, just feel better about today? It highlights that all change starts from within. We have to think there is a better way. We have to think differently than we have before to feel better once more. Decide to persevere The song continues, If you never want to leave to turn and go away, you might feel better, might feel better if you stay. Those may be the most powerful words in the whole song. Change your mind by deciding to stay. When the going gets tough, the tough stay and fight. Doesn t have the same ring as the saying we re used to. But flight is often what keeps us from achieving our dreams. The tough persist. They don t give up. The tough resist the natural, human tendency to see the grass as greener on the other side of the fence. Decide to take it all in The next verse starts with some great questions: Have you ever danced in the rain? Or thanked the sun just for shining? Or the sea? Then they tell you why it s so important to ask those questions: Take it all in, the world s a show. And yeah, you look much better, look much better when you glow. Isn t it true? When troubles mount, when a challenge looms large, doesn t it help to just get away for a few minutes and calm down? When you experience the magnificence of nature, the issues you face seem so much smaller. Decide to give up with a twist There s a great twist in the next verse. They say: If you ve had enough of all your tryin , just give up the state of mind you re in. They don t say to give up. They say to change your mind! Look at things in a new way and try, try again! They continue by saying: If you re tired of fighting battles with yourself, if you want to be somebody else, change your mind. Stop. Stop beating yourself up. Stop wishing you weren t you. You are a special person. Change your mind and show the world your gifts. An unusual call to action They close the song with what may be the most unusual call to action we ve ever seen: What ya say we both go and seize the day. Cause what s your hurry, what s your hurry anyway. Get going. Do it now. But don t get in such a hurry to reach your destination that you don t enjoy the journey along the way. Enjoy the good times and the bad. Enjoy the people you love. Because when you do reach your destination, when you re living the life of which you dream life on your own terms, you ll look back and realize that your journey is part of the prize! Here are two key principles to never forget: 1. You are the entrepreneur of your life; you and only you are in charge of it. 2. If it works for you, it works. ___ ___ With these two principles in mind, you can steer your way through good times and bad to get to your destination. There are natural laws which we can t break without unfavorable consequences. But we also place a lot of rules on ourselves. These rules come from many influencers family, friends, co-workers, Hollywood, advertisers, society at large, and tradition to name a few. Sometimes we need to follow these rules. Sometimes it pays to break them. Here s an example: Fred DeLuca had just graduated from high school. He wanted to go to college and then medical school, but he had a problem. The only jobs that he could get only paid minimum wage. He couldn t make enough to pay for his education. So he approached a family friend and asked him for the money to start a restaurant. He got the money and opened the restaurant. It lost money Fred would have been better off working for minimum wage! But the young man was not dismayed. He did something that we wouldn t do; maybe you wouldn t either. He opened a second store nearby! There was just one problem it lost money too. What Fred did next was downright crazy he opened a third restaurant! Before long, all three locations were profitable because he could advertise all three with the same budget as just one. This is the story of how Fred DeLuca started Subway. His tactic opening more stores in spite of losses may not work for anyone else. It doesn t matter to Fred; it worked for him. With the two key principles in mind, here are the action steps to duplicate the success of bigg winners like Fred DeLuca. We ve put them into an acronym to make them easier to remember: I STEER. Investigation: Match your talent with a specific market opportunity. Strategy: Formulate a plan to get started. Tactics: Break your strategy down into specific actions to be done by a specific time. Execution: Act upon your tactics. Evaluation: Review your progress and make any and all necessary adjustments. Reprise: Repeat these steps in harmony with the knowledge you ve gained. ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Step 5-Find Abundance in a World of Scarcity

Today we ll wrap up our series on abundant living. We re tired of hearing about scarcity so we thought it was time to talk about the other side of things. Before we introduce our fifth and final step, let s talk about something we haven t addressed yet in this series. You ll see how it relates to this last step in a couple of minutes. ___ ___ Should you live abundantly? Would living abundantly make you feel guilty? For some, it may because, especially today, we value frugality. Abundance has gotten a bad rap. Some people equate abundance with excess, excess with greed, and greed with evil. Therefore, they think that seeking abundance is wrong. In light of the current economic crisis, coming out of a period of conspicuous consumption, there may be a tendency to go too far the other way. But we re really talking apples and oranges here and that s an important distinction to make. Bigg success is life on your own terms. In other words, to each their own. As long as you re not hurting anyone by having abundance, then enjoy it. And as we ve discussed, abundance usually comes to those who find ways of helping others win as well. So with all that in mind, here s our fifth and final step to finding abundance in a world of scarcity: Share more and you ll have more Want to feel like you re living abundantly? Then give something away! Seems counter-intuitive, doesn t it? If you can t afford to share, you re not seeing abundance. When you give your money or your time away, you re signaling to your brain (and your soul) that you have more than you need. Research shows that sharing has benefits as great as receiving. Allan Luks, the Executive Director of the New York chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters, coined the phrase helper s high in his book: The Healing Power of Good. Giving creates an endorphin rush similar to working out. This is the helper s high. Give is a verb. Verbs mean action. So take action today give! You can t afford it? Can you give something you don t use any longer? You may be able to give and de-clutter at the same time! Do you have any canned goods you could donate? Can you give your time instead? Give your attention to someone who s lonely. Sometimes it s not, Buddy, can you spare a dime? It s Buddy, can you spare some time? It s funny how those who are most critical of people with abundance are often the last people to share any of theirs. To twist a line from Seinfeld, can you spare a share? It s the final step to finding abundance. That s bigg success! ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Bad news is the news. We hear a lot about the scarcity. We don t hear so much about the abundance. That s why we re talking about steps you can take to live abundantly. We re ready for Step 4: ___ ___ Eliminate zero-sum thinking One of the reasons we don t feel more abundance is because we ve bought into the mindset that everything is a zero-sum game. Somebody has to lose in order for anybody to win. Hollywood says so. Our media tells us that it s the case. Politicians don t get it. Successful entrepreneurs get it. Bigg success is life on your own terms. Implicit in that definition is that you are the entrepreneur of your life. You own it. You are in charge. There s something successful entrepreneurs understand that many people including the elite in our society just don t get. Entrepreneurs know that they win second. In order for them to win, at least some portion of society must win first. They create fortunes because they understand that there are very few zero-sum games in the world. Think about it. In most cases, we do business with people because it s mutually beneficial. If it weren t, we would stop doing business together. So if we take the zero-sum attitude, we won t create value. If one party has to lose so the other party can win, nothing is added to society. Bill Gates got it. He became the richest person in the world because a large number of people felt that Microsoft s products made their lives and / or their businesses better. Some argue about his contribution. That will be true of your contribution as well. You will face critics if you do anything of any significance. But you won t care. You will let the market vote. You will know that you have helped people win because they will vote with their dollars. They choose to work with you because you make their lives better in some way. Warren Buffett got it. Like Bill Gates, he has ascended to the top of the list of the richest people in the world. He did it by delivering returns to his investors that they couldn t achieve on their own. To live abundantly, we must first discard the zero-sum game mentality. ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Subscribe to the Bigg Success Weekly it s FREE! ___ Create wealth by creating value The best way to do that is one relationship at a time. We must adopt a win / win attitude in every relationship we have. When we do that we create value. The value of any relationship is the emotional goodwill you have created in that relationship. The sum of the value of all of your relationships is the value of your network. Now and in the foreseeable future, the greatest wealth will be created by people with the best networks. Create value and therefore abundance for other people and you ll find abundance in your own life. Now, please understand that it doesn t happen instantly. In the economy of a previous generation, you had to plant in the spring if you wanted to harvest in the fall. It may take days, weeks, months, or even years for you to see the result. However, if all you see when you look at people is dollar signs, you won t harvest the opportunities presented in the years ahead. You won t create wealth. You won t feel abundance. Put other people first. Look for a win for them with all the fervor you look for a win for you. That s a mindset that leads to bigg success. We re thrilled that you checked in with us today. We re right in the middle of a five-part series. First we talked about feeling fortunate. Last time, we discussed the importance of building a reserve in your schedule and in your finances. Defining what bigg success means to you what it means to live your life on your own terms is a critical component of building a reserve. It s also a part of the third step which we ll discuss today. Step 3 is ___ ___ Conquer Clutter There are two kinds of clutter physical (the one we most often think about) and mental. As long as you have clutter, you won t feel abundance in your life. Physical clutter There are three levels of physical clutter, according to Julie Morgenstern, author of Organizing from the Inside Out: Level 1 clutter means simple mistakes that are relatively easy to fix. Have a place for everything that s easily accessible. If you don t have a place, get it out of your space! Level 2 clutter is about outside forces. You may simply have too much responsibility. You may be going through a transition. Maybe you don t have the space you need. It could even be the person with whom you live! Level 3 physical clutter stems from deeper issues. Some people fulfill their need for abundance by having an abundance of stuff . Others like the thrill of the hunt. It may symbolize a lack of goals. Maybe there s some sentimental attachment to the stuff . It can even indicate a perfectionist, believe it or not. Mental clutter It s also important to clear out the clutter in our minds. We get bogged down in the past. Holding grudges holds us back. Forgiveness frees up our minds and spirits to press forward. Not only do we need to forgive others, we need to forgive ourselves. In fact, if you can t truly forgive yourself, how can you possibly forgive others? Cut yourself some slack, for crying out loud! You deserve a break today! We also need to learn the right lessons from the past. As kids, we put our hands on a hot stove and got burned. So we didn t put our hand on a hot stove again. As adults, we ve put our hand on a symbolic hot stove and gotten burned. How did we respond? We don t turn on the stove anymore! Life is full of risk. Try as you might, you can t avoid it. More importantly, you shouldn t avoid it! Bigg success comes to those who take calculated risks. Sometimes it works out; sometimes it doesn t. Either way, learn from it and then turn that stove on again and cook up some bigg success for yourself! Finally, it s important to understand our strengths and weaknesses. But we clutter our mind with our weaknesses. Then we reinforce those thoughts by telling ourselves all of the reasons why we can t do something. Stop telling yourself what you can t do. Focus on what you can, and will, do! We need to believe that we can do it so we will find a way to get it done. Then we will find abundance. That s bigg success! ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Subscribe to the Bigg Success Weekly it s FREE! ___ Thanks so much for the gift of your time today. Oil supplies are running out fast. Our water supply is going down the drain. Money is tight. Credit has dried up. Don t try to get a loan now. Job losses are permanent. Many of them will never come back. ___ ___ These are a sampling of some headlines we found while researching this post. Scarcity is in the news. It smacks us in the face every time we turn around. Here s our take on it: opportunity is everywhere. There s never been a better time to find yours. Do you doubt it? Then it won t happen for you. When you don t believe you can change your position in the world, you can t. When you do believe it, you re one step closer to making it happen. Yes, we re blasted daily with stories about financial trouble. But we have to overcome stinkin thinkin because we re fortunate to live in a time when there is so much opportunity. Yes, you heard that correctly. Right now, there is so much opportunity! And here s the best news of all the opportunities of today and tomorrow don t require a lot of money to create a lot more money. They do require you to think abundantly. So we thought we d do our part by doing a series of posts five in all on finding abundance. Here s the first step: Start creating a fortune by feeling fortunate. We tend to focus on what we don t have. We beat ourselves up because we haven t accomplished everything we planned to. We experience regret, anger and depression because of our lot in life. We compare ourselves to others and get upset because they seem to be living better than we are. We think they re the fortunate ones. We re wrong. We are the fortunate ones. So we must be different. We must feel fortunate. Start every day by focusing on what you do have. Be thankful for the wonderful people in your life. Congratulate yourself for how far you ve already come. Feel excited about the opportunities, and yes, even the challenges, that you have before you. You ll find that after a couple weeks of this daily session you ll feel fortunate the beginning of living abundantly. When you feel fortunate, you ll find your fortune, however you define it. It appears that fall is here. The leaves in the trees are starting to change colors in our area of the world. We saw the most beautiful fuchsia a couple of days ago in a tree. No painting could possibly capture it. ___ ___ ___ I love the coolness in the air as it hits your face. There s sort of a crisp, clean smell to it. I love fall! ___ ___ Well, I m a summer girl. This fall has been particularly cool and damp. It s been so cloudy that, when you look out the window, it seems more like winter except the leaves are still on the trees. ___ ___ I think the coolness of the fall helps me sleep better. Maybe I haven t evolved enough. My genes date back generations to the time before we had air conditioning! ___ ___ The season doesn t much matter to me. I think it s my parent s fault. When I was a kid, they made me go to bed early, like around 8:30. My room was in the front of the house where I could hear all the other kids outside still playing. I don t go to bed early to this day! So I m not a morning person! ___ Here s our point: sometimes, for some people, waking up is hard to do. Are you one of those people? When the alarm goes off, would you like to smash it? ___ When I did morning radio and I was on the air at 5 a.m., the alarm would go off at 4. I definitely wanted to smash it! It was painful for me getting up at that time of the day. But I know some morning disc jockeys for who it is no problem at all. ___ ___ I feel very fortunate. With the work we do now, most of the time there s no need for an alarm. I find that some days, I wake up incredibly early and then the next day, I ll sleep a couple of hours more. ___ What we ve been told Of course, there seem to be some societal expectations about when you should get up. We ve all heard the ancient proverb, The early bird gets the worm. ___ Who wants to eat worms? ___ No less an authority than Benjamin Franklin said, Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. ___ Well, I m a woman and you ll hear me roar if I try to get up too early. ___ Some people say that if you don t jump out of bed ready to go, it means you re not happy with your work. Maybe it just means you re not a morning person. What works for you works Bigg success is life on your own terms. For some people, that means going to bed early and getting up early. For others, it means staying up late and getting up late. Do what works for you. You have a certain natural body clock. Get in sync with it for your bigg success. You toss a small pebble into this bigg body of water. As it splashes into the water, it creates a ripple a ripple that flows out from the center where the rock hit the water in all directions. ___ ___ The same thing can happen in your schedule. You have your day all mapped out. Then something unexpected hits it. It ripples out and can affect your whole life, for the day or longer. In our interconnected world, it may be a ripple in someone else s schedule that creates a ripple in yours. Your spouse has to work late so you need to make dinner. A co-worker has a sick kid so you need to double up on a project. A client calls and you have a great opportunity but the work has to be done right away. That s exactly what happened to us recently. We had too many projects on the table already. We had another who needed a proposal revised. Work can affect home. Home can affect work. If you re not careful, a little ripple in your schedule can create a tidal wave in your life. If you schedule yourself for every minute of every day, a little ripple can create a tidal wave. Plan for the unplanned. Allow time in your schedule to react to the inevitable situations that will arise. Similarly, if you don t allow for extra time on every project, a little ripple in your schedule can create a tidal wave in your life. Plus X your schedule. Budget more time than you think it will take. Bigg goal-getters tend to be a pretty optimistic bunch. We think we can do more than is humanly possible. Try to discover your natural optimist bias. For example, you may find that you think it will take two hours but it actually takes three. You think it will take two days; then you do it in three. By tracking expectations and comparing it to the actual, you ve learned that you need to plus 50% your schedule. If you get done earlier than you thought, you know you won t have any trouble finding something to do. If you don t give yourself some down time, you can expect a little ripple to create a tidal wave. Rest and relaxation are extremely important. Variety is invigorating. Give yourself some time to recover. Even so called wasted time just pure do-nothing downtime is valuable sometimes. Similarly, if you don t take care of yourself, a little ripple in your schedule can create a tidal wave in your life. Do something, anything, physical. It can make a tremendous difference in your ability to deal with ripples. If you re like us, we often grab a quick bite to eat while we keep working. You may do that now and then, but force yourself to get away from it all once in a while. And give yourself some time to wind down before you go to bed. Otherwise, it s hard to shut the brain off. If you don t tend to all areas of your life, a little ripple can create a tidal wave. If you re so busy doing everything you do, you may not be tending to important relationships. When a little ripple comes along, the connection is missing that keeps it a ripple. So it turns into a tidal wave. There will be ripples on your path to bigg success. Ripples make calm waters more interesting. Keeping them from turning into tidal waves leads to bigg success. How do you deal with ripples?
