TRUTH!above $147 a barrel By MADLEN READ, AP Business Writer 1 hour, 22 minutes ago NEW YORK - Oil prices spiked to a new record above $147 a barrel Friday, as rising hostilities between the West and Iran and the potential for attacks on Nigerian oil facilities gave investors reason to rush back into the energy markets. ADVERTISEMENT Another drop in the U.S. dollar also lured buyers. The resurgence in crude prices not only raises the concern that $4-a-gallon gasoline is here to stay for U.S. drivers — it also means that heating homes could get significantly more expensive this winter. Heating oil futures surged on the New York Mercantile Exchange to a record of more than $4.15 a gallon, and natural gas also rose. "If you think your gasoline bills are expensive now, wait till you get your home heating bill this winter," said Stephen Schork, an analyst and trader in Villanova, Pa. The problem is that while U.S. consumer demand is waning as people try to save money, other factors are keeping energy costs high. Those factors include the weak dollar, refineries cutting back on production and relatively resilient demand for diesel fuel. Diesel is a distillate fuel that is produced and distributed similarly to heating oil, so diesel demand often affects the price of heating oil. The other big reason gasoline and heating bills are likely to stay high: unrest in the Middle East and Africa. "The bulls are still able to spin a bullish case on this — not based so much on the fundamentals, but on a lot of 'What if?' scenarios," Schork said. Iran, which has long been under U.N. scrutiny for its uranium enrichment program, has been testing missiles this week, including a new missile capable of reaching Israel. On Thursday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned the oil-producing nation that the United States will defend its allies, and Iran responded with another missile launch. Neither the United States nor Israel has ruled out a military strike on Iran. AP Stock decline as Fannie, Freddie fall sharply Friday July 11, 10:29 am ET By Tim Paradis, AP Business Writer Stocks tumble in early going amid worries about Fannie, Freddie; oil sets fresh records NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks tumbled Friday as investors focused on troubles at mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and watched oil prices climb further into record territory. Fannie and Freddie at times each lost more than 40 percent on growing speculation that a government bailout is needed. A collapse of the two financiers would cause further shock to the financial system, and trigger more losses to banks and brokerages with significant holdings of mortgage-backed securities. ADVERTISEMENT Global banks and brokerages have scrambled to sell assets and raise capital in an effort to offset nearly $300 billion of write-downs linked to the credit crisis. Citigroup Inc. announced Friday it will sell its German retail banking operation to France's Credit Mutuel for $7.7 billion. Meanwhile, oil continued its ascent on supply concerns. A barrel of oil vaulted to a record above $147. The confluence of negative news offset a mostly positive quarterly report from General Electric Co. The conglomerate that owns everything from television network NBC to jet engine plants reported second-quarter profits that met analysts' expectations. However, the outlook across its business lines was mixed. In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 102.91, or 0.92 percent, to 11,126.11 after being down more than 180 points in the early going. Broader stock indicators also lost ground. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 8.39, or 0.67 percent, to 1,245.00, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 19.97, or 0.88 percent, to 2,237.88. Light, sweet crude rose $4.82 to $146.47 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Behind the rise are concerns about a disruption to tight global supplies amid tensions over Iran's launch of test missiles and the possible renewal of oil-related violence in Nigeria. Bond prices fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.84 percent from 3.80 percent late Thursday. The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices rose. In corporate news, Freddie Mac fell $3.26, or 41 percent, to $4.74, while Fannie Mae tumbled $4.74, or 36 percent, to $8.46 as investors worried about their stability. Piper Jaffray analyst Robert Napoli lowered his price targets on both companies, and said in a note to clients investors should "not be in a position that only two government-sponsored lenders are willing to make mortgage loans and, without them, our economy would collapse." Citi rose 18 cents to $16.45 after saying it will book a $4 billion gain from the sale of its German retail operation. The deal is part of a plan by Chief Executive Vikram Pandit to sell up to $500 billion in assets to help boost profitability. Investors remain cautious about the entire financial sector, especially ahead of second-quarter reports due next week from major names like JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Merrill Lynch & Co. JPMorgan declined 63 cents to $33.88 and Merrill fell 33 cents to $28.38. There are also new reports that InBev NV raised its takeover offer Anheuser-Busch Cos. The maker of Budweiser, Bud Light and other beers is expected to approve the new offer, which values the company at $70 a share, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Anheuser-Busch rose $4.97, or 7.3 percent, to $65.70. In economic news, the United States' trade deficit narrowed in May as exports -- including industrial supplies and consumer goods -- climbed to all-time highs. The Commerce Department said growing exports drove the trade gap down to $58.8 billion, a 1.2 percent decrease from April and the best showing since March. Investors are also examining a better-than-expected reading of the mood of consumers. The Reuters/University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index rose to 56.6 for July from 56.4 in June. It had been expected to decline. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 5 to 2 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 295.3 million shares. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 2.59, or 0.39 percent, to 667.85. Overseas, Japan's Nikkei stock average fell 0.21 percent. In afternoon trading in Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 1.40 percent, Germany's DAX index declined 2.36 percent, and France's CAC-40 fell 1.94 perce Author: DOUGLASBICKFORD99 Keywords: Fannie mae freddie collapse fall stocks douglas bickford truthtv commentary analysis political commercial news grassroot Added: July 11, 2008

P Oil down more than $8 in 2 days Tuesday July 8, 11:34 am ET By Adam Schreck, AP Business Writer Oil sheds more than $8 in 2 days as traders take profits and supply worries dissipate NEW YORK (AP) -- Oil prices fell as much as $6 a barrel Tuesday, bringing crude down $10 this week and hurling prices back to levels not seen since June 26. Traders, keeping a wary eye on the global economy, cashed in gains from oil's recent rally. ADVERTISEMENT A barrel of light, sweet crude for August delivery fell $6.23 in morning trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, following a $3.92 slide on Monday, and later traded down $5.79 at $135.58. The market's bearish turn this week erases, at least for the time being, the effect of a rally that pushed prices past $145 in a string of record-setting sessions before the Fourth of July. Analysts attributed much of the recent sell-off to profit-taking, saying traders were cashing in on the previous week's gains. At the same time, concerns about supply disruptions subsided and fears that the economic slowdown is spreading moved to the forefront. "Sagging global equities, which are tipping a lack of confidence in economic growth in both developed and emerging economies, helped trigger the retreat in the energy markets," Addison Armstrong, director of market research at Tradition Energy, said in a research note. Still, analysts warned the pullback could be fleeting, saying it is a correction that could quickly shift and send prices bolting higher. Trader and analyst Stephen Schork said the expectation just a few days ago that crude prices would touch $150 this week now "does not look like the proverbial done deal." "Be that as it may, we have seen this movie before, i.e. crude oil weakens a little and the bubble-bears jump in," he wrote in a daily market commentary, suggesting the price respite might be temporary. A decline in oil prices wouldn't translate to a pullback at the gas pump for some time. Retail gasoline prices in the U.S. held steady at a record $4.108 a gallon, according to AAA auto club, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. Diesel continued to advance, rising more than half a penny to a record $4.807 a gallon. Oil hit a trading record of $145.85 on last week before settling at a record close of $145.29 a barrel. On Monday, prices tumbled $3.92, or about 2.7 percent, to settle at $141.37. Concern over the unruly oil market was a top priority Tuesday at a summit of industrialized powers in Rusutsu, Japan with leaders calling on petroleum suppliers to boost production and refining and to increase investment in oil exploration and output over the medium term. The G-8 -- which groups the U.S., Britain, Japan, France, Germany, Canada, Russia and Italy -- also called for diversifying sources of energy and further efforts to improve energy efficiency. Bush welcomes new US citizens on 4th of July By PETE YOST, Associated Press Posted: 2008-07-04 10:59:29 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - President Bush invoked the memory of Thomas Jefferson Friday in welcoming new U.S. citizens at a naturalization ceremony at Monticello, saying "I'll be proud to call you a fellow American." On his final Fourth of July as president, Bush told an audience at the home of the Declaration of Independence's author that he was honored to be present for the naturalization. Shouts from protesters were heard during Bush's remarks, and the president responded by saying he agrees that "we believe in free speech in the United States of America." The last six Fourth of July holidays have taken place amid continuing violence in Iraq. Bush's addition of 28,000 U.S. troops last year in Iraq helped foster a measure of stability in what is now the sixth summer of the war. Bush mentioned neither the war in Iraq nor the battle against terrorism in his speech, other than to say that "we pay tribute to the brave men and women who wear the uniform." For the people assembled with him at the naturalization ceremony, he said: "When you raise your hands and take your oath, you will complete an incredible journey. ... From this day forward, the history of the United States will be part of your heritage." "Throughout our history," he said, "the words of the declaration have inspired immigrants around the world to set sail to our shores. ... They made America a melting pot of culture from all across the world. They made diversity a great strength of our democracy." "Those of you taking the oath of citizenship at this ceremony hail from 30 different nations," Bush noted. " ... You all have one thing in common - and that is a shared love of freedom ... and this is the love that makes us all Americans." Said Bush: "This is a fitting place to celebrate our nation's independence. Thomas Jefferson once said he'd rather celebrate the Fourth of July than his own birthday. To me, it's pretty simple - the Fourth of July weekend is my birthday weekend." Before his brief remarks, the president was given a tour of Jefferson's home including the room where the author of the Declaration of Independence died on July 4, 1826, the same day as the death of Jefferson's predecessor, John Adams. Salad Dressing Floods Ohio Homes AP Posted: 2008-07-03 22:03:28 Filed Under: Weird News COLUMBUS, Ohio (July 2) - An Ohio EPA official said creamy ranch dressing mixed with sewage and storm runoff flooded the basements of at least 10 Columbus homes. Alisa Jones, WBNS-10TV/div Storm waters mixed with sewage and salad dressing left behind a mess on this basement floor of a Columbus, Ohio, home. For more coverage, visit 10tv.com Sewage from T. Marzetti Co., a Columbus-based salad dressing maker, overwhelmed the Columbus storm sewer system during heavy rains last week. A resident reported the problem to the state's Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday. The EPA's Michael Dalton said the agency suspects that the factory's pipes merge with nearby homes, but aren't wide enough to handle extra water during a storm. Neighbors have complained to the EPA over the last 30 years about discharges from the city sewage line that serves Marzetti into a creek. Lowell Berry, the company's director of human resources, said Wednesday that the company had no comment. Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. By NINIEK KARMINI, Associated Press Writer Thu Jul 3, 6:28 AM ET JAKARTA, Indonesia - Anti-terror police arrested 10 suspected Muslim militants and seized a large cache of high-powered bombs, foiling a major attack targeting Westerners in the Indonesian capital, police and media reports said Thursday. ADVERTISEMENT Among those detained was a Singaporean who met several times with Osama bin Laden, a senior police officer told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The arrests highlighted the lingering terror threat in Indonesia, which has been hit by a string of suicide bombings blamed on the regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah since Sept. 11, 2001, including the 2002 attacks on Bali island that left 202 people dead, many of them foreign tourists. There were no immediate details about the timing or the exact location of the planned strike in Jakarta. Some of the suspects told police during interrogations that they had initially planned to attack foreign tourists on Sumatra Island, but shifted their target to Jakarta after realizing too many Indonesian lives could have been lost, TVOne quoted anti-terror police as saying. The militants canceled a planned attack on Kafe Bedudel, a small cafe in the hilly resort town of Bukittinggi in West Sumatra, police spokesman Abubakar Nataprawira told reporters Thursday. The Indonesian government has won praise for arresting and convicting hundreds of Islamic militants since the Bali attacks, leaving the terror network severely weakened and isolated, with the most recent strike occurring more than 2 1/2 years ago. Citing improvements in security, the United States lifted a travel warning early this year that had been in place since 2000 and there were no immediate plans to reverse that decision. "The Indonesian government's response to the threat has improved," said Tristram Perry, the public diplomacy officer at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta. "If anything, these busts validate the lifting of the ban." At least 22 bombs were seized during raids Wednesday in Palembang, a coastal city on Sumatra. Some were packed with bullets to maximize the impact of the blast, Nataprawira said. Many were ready to use, he said, adding that dozens of pounds of explosive powder, grenades and several types of electric detonators also were recovered. The arrests began Saturday in the Sumatran village of Sekayu when police captured 35-year-old Singaporean terror suspect Abu Hazam, who allegedly met with bin Laden on several occasions and received training in Afghanistan, the police said. "He admitted giving bomb-making training to a number of Palembang residents implicated with the terror network," said Nataprawira. The reports said the man, also known as Omar, tipped police off to the whereabouts of two other suspects, Abdul Rahman and an unidentified alleged bomb-maker, who were arrested Monday. Six others were netted Wednesday and a seventh before dawn Thursday. All but one of the men were flown to the capital, their faces covered by black masks as they disembarked from the police aircraft.
