We are pleased to have Steve and Annie Chapman join us on our broadcast today. The Chapman s have been speaking and writing about family life for over 25 years and now have two grown children, Nathan and Heidi. Their music, books and seminars have helped scores of parents fulfill their most important mission in life, passing the baton of faith to their children. Annie has joined us on the broadcast before when we talked about her book, A Woman s Answer to Anger. And today she is back with her husband Steve to talk about two other books they have written, Ten Things I Want My Son To Know, and Ten Things I Want My Daughter To Know. Annie says, For me there are three choices that I believe determine our destination in life. First we must help our children to choose heaven. As a mother I wanted to make sure my daughter understood the blessed gift God had provided through the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. As Heidi was growing up we often spoke about what it meant to be a follower of Christ and when she was five she accepted Jesus as her personal savior. Second I want my daughter to choose happiness. Joy and contentment are born out of an attitude that is grown from the inside and shows on the outside. It is true that circumstances can make us feel helpless, but happiness is always a choice. And finally I want my daughter to choose health. Here s a bit of wisdom I have shared with Heidi throughout her life: Don t let anything you can change limit your life. Steve says, Probably the most sobering responsibility of a father is the realization that as a father you are a builder. When Nathan was born I was keenly aware that God had placed into my care the smallest, most innocent, and most impressionable of His creation. And even more serious, the hour would someday come when He would call the child back to Himself and divinely assess his condition. I knew that if my son reached his adult years, how he used his free will would have the greatest bearing on God s final determination of his soul. Today, the impact of so many claims on a person s time and endeavors steal away from the time needed to assess the condition of your soul. That s why I love to spend so much time out-of-doors. It allows time to reflect and get back in touch with God and His creation it helps establish the really necessary priorities of life.

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.” Genesis 22:1–3 Delayed obedience is disobedience. I once read this poem on obedience: Where our Captain bids us go, 'Tis not ours to murmur no; He that gives the sword and shield Chooses too the battlefield Where we are to fight the foe. Many times we view obedience as doing what we are asked, but obedience is doing what we are asked when we are asked. Author Thomas a Kempis once wrote, “Instant obedience is the only kind of obedience there is; delayed obedience is disobedience.” When God commanded Abraham to offer his only son as a sacrifice, Abraham’s response was immediate obedience. Verse 3 says, “And Abraham rose up early in the morning….” He didn’t complain or make excuses; Abraham simply obeyed God. Romans 1:17 says, “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” Abraham trusted God and immediately did what God had told him to do. No doubt this was a challenge of faith beyond comprehension, but he had full confidence that God would follow through on His promise of a son. Abraham had learned that God never fails. When God commanded him to leave Ur and travel into the desert, Abraham went. When God promised a child, Abraham believed. God proved His promise by providing Isaac as Abraham and Sarah’s son. Abraham had seen that even when he didn’t see a way, God always provided; so he simply trusted God and obeyed immediately. Are you responding immediately to the Holy Spirit’s promptings in your heart? Is there an area of the Christian life where you are delaying in your obedience to Christ? God’s way is always the best way! And immediate obedience always reaps greater rewards. It takes trust, but God is trustworthy. Whatever God has commanded you to do, do it right away.
