Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland on a 31-year-old statutory rape charge earlier this year, and many Hollywood stars immediately rallied to his defense. Celebrity trials aren't new to us, but the particular ugliness of rape and child abuse still seem to get glossed over when there's a big star standing accused. But do we all learn something from public trials and the public discussions that come in their wake? As Polanski remains under house arrest, we ask Trish Kinney, author of Silver Platter Girl , Michael Musto,Village Voice columnist and author of Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back , and Dominic Lawson, columnist for The Independent, if any good can come of a trial, and why stars seem to be given a free pass on horrific behavior. Historian Howard Zinn's most famous works, A People's History of the United States, and its companion volume, Voices of A People's History of the United States , have inspired millions to take a different look at their history. The documentary The People Speak, airing on the History Channel this Sunday, December 13, brings those voices to life. Actors Harris Yulin of Scarface and Q'orianka Kilcher of The New World were two of the many actors who participated, and they joined us to discuss the film. We also have clips from The People Speak featuring Marisa Tomei and John Legend performing with Benjamin Bratt. The Copenhagen climate talks are still going on, and Jessy Tolkan, executive director of the Energy Action Coalition, joins us from Copenhagen to talk about her work with youth fighting for a clean, just energy future. Senator Bernie Sanders put a hold on Obama's renomination of Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke for a second term. In this clip from Brave New Films, Sanders calls once again to break up the big banks -- that have gotten even bigger under Bernanke -- and calls for transparency from the Fed. With the holidays approaching, it's time for heartwarming movies on the television. But the real world isn't a very heartwarming place these days -- people are still losing jobs and struggling to buy food, let alone gifts. We know who had a wonderful year, though, with our money: big banks. We have video from BanksterUSA reanimating a classic holiday story that isn't so far from our own situation.

Sarah Palin's book, Going Rogue: An American Life , comes out tomorrow, and the corporate media has been all Palin, all the time. We wonder just what it is about the former Alaskan governor that keeps people coming back for more. Is it her folksy ways, her sex appeal, her gender, or her willingness to completely disregard the advice of well-intentioned handlers?Richard Kim, senior editor at The Nation, is co-editor of a new book timed for release along with Palin's. Titled Going Rouge: Sarah Palin, An American Nightmare, the book collects essays from around the progressive media analyzing the mysterious appeal of Sarah Palin. Richard joins us along with contributors Rebecca Traister of Salon, Max Blumenthal, author of Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party , and Shannyn Moore of Smart Radio in Alaska to talk about the books, the Right, and why Palin just won't go away. While Sarah Palin blankets the mainstream media, independent media tries to cover all the stories that are getting missed. Independent radio and television pioneer Amy Goodman has been creating a different kind of news program for years with Democracy Now!, first on Pacifica Radio and now on television. She joined Laura in the GRITtv studio to talk about her new book, Breaking the Sound Barrier, making independent media, and her struggles with the health care system while dealing with her mother's recent illness.Speaking of health care, Senator Bernie Sanders breaks it down for our viewers: what's in the House and Senate plans, what's good, what needs work, and what's absolutely unacceptable? (Hint: we covered it a bit last week.)In San Francisco, hotel workers at the Grand Hyatt, many of them Chinese immigrants, were recently told that their new contract would require them to pay for their own health insurance. The workers went on strike, protesting that this decision would make them choose between paying for health care and putting food on the table. From Syracuse, New York this weekend, a protest of drone aircraft, including Kathy Kelly of Voices for Creative Nonviolence and Daniel and Jerry Berrigan, gathered outside of the Hancock Air National Guard Base. Thanks to New America Media, Brave New Films, and EssentialDissent for the video.

Senator Bernie Sanders has been a leader in Congress in the movement for single-payer health care, or Medicare for all, but he's also working with the Senate leadership to ensure that the bill that does pass, while it won't be single-payer, will contain more positive steps than negative ones. In this segment from Brave New Films, Sanders lays out the good (more coverage, no preexisting conditions), the bad (proposed tax on existing benefits), and the ugly (the Stupak amendment) in the current House and Senate plans.

Bernie Sanders, the Congress's longest-serving independent, takes a question from a citizen on the necessity of extending the military commitment in Afghanistan. Sanders says that Americans need to be thinking about what are goals are in Afghanistan, and notes that we don't want to be continuing this discussion years from now. Thanks to our friends at Brave New Films for this video!

The muted response to Van Jones resignation says volumes about where progressives stand in the Obama administration and whether so-called outsiders have a role to play in shaping the administration s policies. Judging by just how quickly the administration surrendered to Glenn Beck s assault Jones wasn t really worth defending. What does that say about his ideas?A recent story in AlterNet explores some of the ties between Astroturf groups and the FOX news campaign. Jane Hamsher at Firedoglake offers her take on why liberal institutions have distanced themselves from the whole affair. So what s really at stake? And what does the Van Jones story reveal about American politics?Ludovic Blain, Project Manager of Closing the Racial Wealth Gap Initiative, Rory O Connor, co-founder of Globalvision and the author of Shock Jocks: Hate Speech and Talk Radio , Tim Wise, the author of Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama , and Jane Hamsher, the founder of Firedoglake discuss the recent developments and what their impact might be.Then, Elmar Wigand, a German labor organizer, on European labor struggles and how the IWW has managed to organize the staff at Compass Group, a global catering company and the 20th largest employer in the world. They aren t exactly a household name but they have roots here in the United States as well. Finally, the Huffington Post Investigative Fund on the healthcare crisis in rural Virginia. A free clinic last month drew thousands of people seeking care. Even if healthcare reform is achieved this year, they say, millions will be left without insurance by the end of the decade. Another argument for single payer? Thanks to the Real News Network, Brave New Films and Bernie Sanders, and Rev. Billy for video in tonight s show.
