In his Regina Coeli address in St Peters Square on Pentecost Sunday, Pope Benedict spoke of the Holy Spirit as being the soul of the Church. He said that without the Holy Spirit the Church would have been reduced to a large historical movement, perhaps a humanitarian kind of agency. The church in reality, the Holy Father went on to say, is continually moulded and driven by the Spirit of God. It is a living body, whose vitality is the fruit of the invisible divine Spirit. After inviting everyone to learn from the example of Mary, Marvellous icon of the Church, the Pope expressed his delight at an initiative of solidarity by the San Lorenzo International Youth Centre in Rome which involves car ...

A procession took place on Saturday in the Vatican Gardens marking an end to the Marian month of May. The Rosary was recited from the church of the St Stephen of the Abyssinians to the Cave of Lourdes. A sea of lights welcomed the arrival of Pope Benedict, after the short liturgy of the Word, recited by the Vicar General of Vatican City, Cardinal Angelo Comastri. In his meditation the Pope stressed the relationship between Mary and the Holy Spirit, pointing to the coincidence of the conclusion of this Marian month and the eve of Pentecost. Mary, said the Holy Father, had a privileged and unbreakable relationship with the Holy Spirit and was together with the disciples in the Cenecle awaiting its arri ...

He went on to say that the two images used to describe the importance of this feast are that of the storm and the fire. The Pope explained that the fire was the Holy Spirit which was brought to earth by Jesus. The way to receive this fire continued Pope Benedict was through the ...

Although walls can easily be built, we all know that they do not last for ever. They can be taken down.During the farewell ceremony in Bethlehem, the Pope once again made a renewed call for openness and generosity of spirit, for an end to intolerance and exclusion. To eliminate divisions, it is above all necessary to remove the walls that we build around our hearts, the barriers that we set up against our neighbors. No matter how intractable and deeply entrenched a conflict may appear to be, Benedict XVI concluded, There are always grounds to hope that it can be resolved, that the patient and persevering efforts of those who work for peace and reconciliation will bear fruit in the end.

Jews, Muslims and Christians alike call this city their spiritual home. How much needs to be done to make it truly a city of peace for all peoples.Benedict XVI reiterated this during the homily of the Mass celebrated on Tuesday, May 12th, in the Valley of Josaphat in front of the Basilica of the Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives. There should be no place within these walls for narrowness, discrimination, violence and injustice. Believers in a God of mercy whether they identify themselves as Jews, Christians or Muslims must be the first to promote this culture of reconciliation and peace, however painstakingly slow the process may be, and however burdensome the weight of past memories. The dep ...

I hear, the Pope said, the cry of those who live in this country who invoke justice, peace, respect for their dignity, security, a daily life free from fear and foreign threats and ...
