Huqin ( ; pinyin: h q n) are a family of bowed string instruments used in Chinese music. In Beijing Opera, the importance of Jinghu (One type of Huqin) is very similar to a guitar in rock and roll music. Mr. Shu Jian is the grandson of the famous Jinghu player, Jiang Feng San, who is the principal player for Mei Lang Fang. It is believed that, out of many students, Shu Jian is the one that received complete art of Jinghu playing from his grandfather. Mr. Shu Jian is here to tell his story.

Legend has it that Bertolt Brecht's world was turned upside down by a Chinese opera star. The European playwright, who felt that physicality had more integrity than speech, met a revelation of the body's true mutability in the person Mei Lan-Fang. To Brecht's amazement, Mei could use pure movement to transform himself into a woman -- all while still in male civilian attire. Standards of realism in theater would be forever changed. Mei Lan-Fang, renowned for his uncanny portrayal of "dan," or female, roles, was perhaps the most famous Peking Opera star ever. This interview is about Mei, his work and his contribution to the Peking Opera.
