This Edition of Prime Time Radio Daze brings you four programs from radio's greatest detectives. First, The Adventures of Sam Spade, played by Howard Duff. This is called, The Cheese Cake Caper. Next, from April 12th, 1949, Dick Powell stars as Richard Diamond in The Man Who Hated Women. Then, from July 24th, 1949, Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. This program is called, Who Took The Taxis. Finally, from March 26th, 1945, Basil Rathbone stars as Shelock Holmes in The Book of Tobit. Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish-born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning while using abductive reasoning inference to the best explanation and astute observation to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Sherlock Holmes himself, and two others are written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890, respectively. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. Conan Doyle, when asked if there was a real Sherlock Holmes, always maintained that Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Sherlock Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations. Dr. Bell was also interested in crime and assisted the police in solving a few cases. According to one theory, the character of Sherlock Holmes was inspired by Wendell Scherer, described in a 1971 article in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine as a consulting detective in a murder case that received a great deal of newspaper attention in England in 1882. However, the London 'Times' online edition has no reference to a Wendell Scherer between 1875 and 1905, and other authorities suggest different derivations. As Always, Enjoy!

After five yarn-provoking reels, the film finally roars into life with a truly exciting climactic shootout. Though Blanche Mehaffey had been in films since the silent days, she never quite attained stardom, and was still being referred to as an "unknown" by the 1938 trade papers. Despite the description, this is not a bad movie.

A young woman is on death row for the murder of a man who was blackmailing her family, although she claims she was framed. Her fiancée, a doctor who is conducting experiments on reviving the dead, also happens to be the state's executioner, and is assigned to pull the switch when she is strapped into the electric chair. A New York Couple is a long way from their home in Brooklyn when their truck breaks down. The two run into one of those goofy fairs, and are forced to sell their only valuable possession. Jose the fair owner sees that Bunny could save his struggling side show but secretly wants the business to fail and does everything to screw up the sale and the love that is developing among the fairs crew for bunny. Crazy tale of some poor sap having too much to drink and finds himself married to a married woman. Similar to Barack Obama awakening this morning finding himself being forced into a shotgun wedding with Hillary Clinton as his running mate.

The lady of the title is author Dorinda Hatch (Joan Caulfield), who writes a scathing best-seller in which she trashes all men. Photographer Bill Shelby (David Niven) vows to make Dorinda eat her words, thereby proving the superiority of the male of the species. Suffice to say that he doesn't succeed--at least until the very, very end. The middle portion of The Lady Says No consists of a surrealistic dream sequence in which Dorinda realizes that she loves Bill despite his rampant chauvinism. This film is not a likely candidate for screening at the next N.O.W. meeting. Lady Says No was produced and directed by Frank Ross, who at the time was married to star Joan Caulfield. A Boy and His Dog is a short story by Harlan Ellison which was also the basis of a 1974 post-apocalyptic science fiction film of the same name directed by L. Q. Jones. The story was first published in 1969. A revised and expanded version was printed in Ellison's 1976 story collection The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World, and Ellison continued the story in the graphic novel Vic and Blood. The film version is often cited as an inspiration for George Miller's Mad Max though Miller has said he didn't view Jones' film until after he had completed his own [citation needed].
