Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp. The day starts with an intense climb. The Barranco Wall, also known as the breakfast wall because it is the first thing you climb out of camp, is a 300m/1,000ft vertical climb on narrow mountain goat like trails up this cliff. It's never too technical, but hands are needed now and then for ballance and the porters often need to pass their load up to make little climbs.

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp. Climb high, sleep low is the order of the day. We will gain almost 1,000m (3,000ft) to Lava Tower at 4,693m (15,380ft). Lava tower is a little jut of cooled magma just off the trail, an optional climb and the most technical part of our trip. After reaching the peak of Lava Tower, it was a 900m descent to Barranco Camp for the night. It felt counter productive, but I'm sure we all slept better in the thicker air and was part of our being able to tackle the heights awaiting the next day.
