Studies: Iraq a $12 billion-a-month war (msnbc) Economists project a much higher ‘burn rate’ than government estimates The Associated Press The flow of blood may be ebbing, but the flood of money into the Iraq war is steadily rising, new analyses show. In 2008, its sixth year, the war will cost approximately $12 billion a month, triple the burn rate of its earliest years, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and co-author Linda J. Bilmes report in a new book. Beyond 2008, working with best-case and realistic-moderate scenarios, they project the Iraq and Afghan wars, including long-term U.S. military occupations of those countries, will cost the U.S. budget between $1.7 trillion and $2.7 trillion — or more — by 2017. Interest on money borrowed to pay those costs could alone add $816 billion to that bottom line, they say. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has done its own projections and comes in lower, forecasting a cumulative cost by 2017 of $1.2 trillion to $1.7 trillion for the two wars, with Iraq generally accounting for three-quarters of the costs. Variations in such estimates stem from the sliding scales of assumptions, scenarios and budget items that are counted. But whatever the estimate, the cost will be huge, the auditors of the Government Accountability Office say. In a Jan. 30 report to Congress, the GAO observed that the U.S. will be committing significant future resources to the wars, requiring decision makers to consider difficult trade-offs as the nation faces an increasing long-range fiscal challenge. These numbers don t include the war s cost to the rest of the world. In Iraq itself, the 2003 U.S.-led invasion _ with its devastating air bombardments — and the looting and arson that followed, severely damaged electricity and other utilities, the oil industry, countless factories, hospitals, schools and other underpinnings of an economy. Untold economic damage No one has tried to calculate the economic damage done to Iraq, said spokesman Niels Buenemann of the International Monetary Fund, which closely tracks national economies. But millions of Iraqis have been left without jobs, and hundreds of thousands of professionals, managers and other middle-class citizens have fled the country. In their book, The Three Trillion Dollar War, Stiglitz, of Columbia University, and Bilmes, of Harvard, report the two wars will have cost the U.S. budget $845 billion in 2007 dollars by next Sept. 30, end of fiscal year 2008, assuming Congress fully funds Bush administration requests. That counts not just military operations, but embassy costs, reconstruction and other war-related expenses. It has cost more than 4,000 American lives and ten’s of thousands of Iraqis. The bottom line may be that today many in the US view the Iraq invasion as a mistake they don t want to see repeated. Troubles in Iraq appear to have fed a desire on the part of some ordinary Americans for disengagement with the world. We are in a period of rising isolationism, just as we saw a bump in isolationism after the war in Vietnam in the 70s, said Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center, at a Center for Strategic and International Studies. Six years ago, America, as well as Iraq, was a different place. Virtually every major poll showed US majorities in support of military action. On another point, national opinion seems clearer: In hindsight, a majority of Americans view the decision to invade as a mistake. Moreover, interest in and knowledge of the situation in Iraq are declining among US citizens, in part because news coverage is diminishing. Public awareness of the number of US military fatalities in Iraq has declined sharply. That does not mean Americans do not support their troops, of course. In fact, unlike the situation during the Vietnam era, there appears to be widespread realization that a small slice of US society, the military, is bearing a disproportionate burden. Americans are generally wary of foreign entanglements and worry about the ramifications of long-term commitments overseas, concludes an analysis of public opinion on Iraq by Karlyn Bowman, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington. Word in the streets is that last night around 2 am at Club Esko in Detroit, Jim Jones, who was about to perform, was rushed and beaten by at least 20 Detroit natives. Reports claim that three individuals were shot. (World Star Hip Hop) Trick Trick is also addressed the rumors of him being shot saying he was nowhere near the club during the alleged incident. He told WKQI-FM (95.5) on Monday morning that he was at home restin and chillin . I m at home. I ain t left this house since Saturday. Trick told WKQI s Mojo in the Morning program Monday morning. Trick said he received a concerned phone call from his mother early Monday, after she had heard a report on television that her son had been shot. After he told her he was safe at home, Trick said his mother called WDIV-TV (Channel 4) and told them to stop reporting the story. As for why he had been linked to the shooting incident that reportedly left two wounded, I m still trying to figure that out, Trick said. Ten men rushed the Esko Lounge on Michigan Avenue near Shelby Street, according to Detroit police. The men got into a fight with rapper Jim Jones and shots were fired. Two men were hit, including a man police identified as Christian Mathis. Local 4 confirmed Mathis was taken to the emergency room at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He is in serious condition. The other man s condition is unknown. Police are looking for the gunman. Thousands of modelling hopefuls were queuing outside a hotel in Manhattan, New York, when bedlam broke out. Police cancelled the audition but could not say what had sparked the panic. Banks and the show s producer Ken Mok said: We are concerned by the events. We still don t know all the details of what triggered the incident. They added: We appreciate the efforts of the NYPD and will assist them in any way possible in this matter. US capital blighted by HIV/Aids City authorities say they are fighting the problem with vigour (bbc news) The US capital is suffering an epidemic of HIV/Aids worse than some African nations, with 3% of over-12s infected, the city s department of health says. Its report suggests the hardest-hit sections of the population are black men, and people aged between 40 and 49. The infection rate puts Washington DC on a par with Uganda. But one factor may be a drive towards more HIV/Aids testing, and the city government insists much is now being done to tackle the problem. According to the report, both the United Nations and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have historically defined an HIV epidemic as generalised and severe when the overall percentage of disease among residents of a specific geographic area exceeds 1%. In the District, nearly every population group and age is experiencing a substantial epidemic, the report says, with the greatest rates of infection among black men (6.5%), Hispanic men (3.0%), and white men (2.6%). In terms of age, those aged 40-49 are the worst affected (7.2%), followed by those aged 50-59 (5.2%). The main mode of transmission is men having sex with men, followed by heterosexual sex and infection through drug use. Actually 5% The chief medical officer at the Whitman-Walker clinic, one of Washington s biggest HIV organisations, told the BBC that the real figure could be even higher. When they ve tested large groups of the District population it looks like the prevalence is actually about 5%, which is higher than the 3% but a lot of the people haven t been tested yet, said Dr Raymond Martins. I think we re seeing the increase recently because the new director of our HIV/Aids administration here in Washington has put a large push for everyone to get tested and so with that testing you re discovering all these people that are HIV-positive that didn t realise they were. The report says the city s Mayor Adrian Fenty and the department are following a three-pronged strategy to tackle the epidemic, by promoting testing for the virus, preventing transmission by providing free condoms and needle exchanges, and doing more for those already living with HIV/Aids.
