National Memory Screening Day

National Memory Screening Day

from recent posts tagged foundation - blip.tv (beta) on November 19, 2009
Duration: 53
As research continues to mount about the effectiveness of memory screenings and the benefits of early detection of memory problems, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) held its 7th annual National Memory Screening Day on November 17. The event coincided with National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, observed during November. More than 2,100 sites across the country offered free, confidential memory screenings and educational materials about memory concerns, successful aging and local resources. The face-to-face screening, conducted by a qualified healthcare professional, took about five minutes to administer and consisted of a series of questions and/or tasks. Sites included doctor's offices, senior centers and assisted living facilities, as well as 1,030 Kmart Pharmacy locations nationwide as part of the chain's GoldK Day. Screeners emphasized that the test results do not represent a diagnosis and encouraged individuals with below-normal scores as well as those who still had concerns to pursue a full medical exam. AFA believes screenings are appropriate for individuals concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning signs of dementia; whose family and friends have noticed changes in them; who believe they are at risk due to family history; or who want to see how their memory is now and for future comparisons. "We must break through the enormous stigma and denial about memory problems that still exist today," said Eric J. Hall, AFA's president and chief executive officer. "It's a message that the nation as a whole and aging baby boomers especially need to heed." Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems. Other member problems might result from causes that are not currently reversible, such as Alzheimer's disease. Warning signs of Alzheimer's disease include forgetting people's names and events, asking repetitive questions and confusion over daily routines. In a report, "Memory Matters," released last December, AFA noted that current research supports screening as a "safe, cost-efficient intervention that can reassure the healthy individual, promote successful aging and, when indicated, direct individuals to appropriate clinical resources." The Sure Cure for a Sinking Spirit

The Sure Cure for a Sinking Spirit

from Be Unstoppable: The Essential Laws of Fearless Living on November 17, 2009
Duration: 336
Show Notes: In this podcast, Guy Finley talks about how resistance to any negative state such as anger, anxiety, or fear does not help diminish the state, but instead actually causes the state to gain mass and strengthens the illusion that it has any authority. Highlights: Our spirit is not meant to sink. At any given moment, we can tell what we are living from by the way we see the world around us. We are not meant to live with a heavy heart, but at present we do not know what else to do. There is no denying the fact that, at times, life can weigh heavily upon our hearts and minds, but we can remain aware of the heaviness instead of consenting to live under it. But as we are now, we do not really want to be conscious our heavy, sinking feeling when we wake up in the morning or whenever that state happens to be present. And yet that sinking feeling is there whether we are aware of it or not. There is an alternative to resisting the way that you feel. Resisting how you feel does not change anything about the way you feel. Resisting does not prove that you are different from the feeling that you have. Resistance to a heavy heart is how that state keeps itself in place and adds mass to itself. Anything that is resisted gains mass. The more that you resist a sinking feeling by coming up with plans to make yourself feel better, the more you sink. But knowing what happens to you when you resist a negative state, and then acting on what you know is a whole other story. As a true aspirant, you need to be awake to yourself more often so that you can begin to see with greater and greater clarity the truth of yourself, instead of agreeing with the parts of yourself that do not want to be what you are. The Importance Of Accreditation In Breast Cancer Treatment

The Importance Of Accreditation In Breast Cancer Treatment

from recent posts tagged american - blip.tv (beta) on October 26, 2009
Duration: 235
More more info visit www.newsinfusion.com A new survey found most women don t understand the importance of accreditation in breast cancer treatment centers. Surprisingly, new research from the American College of Surgeons found two-thirds of women (66%) admit they were not aware or did not know if breast cancer treatment centers and facilities can be accredited. However, where women choose to get breast cancer treatment can impact the care they receive, and ultimately the results they achieve. To be accredited, breast cancer centers must follow a comprehensive and consistent set of standards for treatment based on medical guidelines and evidence. They must also support patients social and emotional needs. Accredited centers are screened by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program of the American College of Surgeons and advised by leading patient groups and professional medical societies. After a brief overview of accreditation what it means and why it is important women overwhelmingly find it to be an important aspect in choosing a breast cancer treatment facility. Dr. David Winchester, medical director for the College s cancer programs, talked about the importance of accreditation and what women need to know about accreditation. He was joined by a breast cancer surgeon and a patient and they discussed the results of the survey that revealed women s lack of awareness of accreditation, the importance of choosing an accredited institution and the facilities available in your area.
