"Yes I am emotional about torture SIR!" Shami Chakrabarti SAVAGES UK Minister Geoff "Buff" Hoon

Shami Chakrabarti SAVAGES UK Minister Geoff Buff Hoon over the US attempts to BLACKMAIL Britain into silence over evidence of Torture. Binyam Mohamed, a British resident held at the American base, has launched a legal challenge in the High Court in London for documents detailing his treatment to be made public. However, two judges ruling on the case said that David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, had advised that releasing the documents could lead to America withdrawing intelligence co-operation. This, it was warned, could lead to Britons facing a very considerable increase in the dangers they face from terrorism. The judges reveal that the secret documents at the centre of the case give rise to an arguable case of torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. It is also disclosed that a British intelligence official may have been present when Mr Mohamed alleges he was tortured. The judgement raises the prospect of criminal charges being brought against British officials.

Israel was born out of Jewish Terrorism Tzipi Livnis Father was a Terrorist Astonishing claims in the House of Parliament. SIR Gerald Kaufman, the veteran Labour MP, yesterday compared the actions of Israeli troops in Gaza to the Nazis who forced his family to flee Poland. During a Commons debate on the fighting in Gaza, he urged the government to impose an arms embargo on Israel. Sir Gerald, who was brought up as an orthodox Jew and Zionist, said: My grandmother was ill in bed when the Nazis came to her home town a German soldier shot her dead in her bed. My grandmother did not die to provide cover for Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian grandmothers in Gaza. The present Israeli government ruthlessly and cynically exploits the continuing guilt from gentiles over the slaughter of Jews in the Holocaust as justification for their murder of Palestinians. He said the claim that many of the Palestinian victims were militants was the reply of the Nazi and added: I suppose the Jews fighting for their lives in the Warsaw ghetto could have been dismissed as militants. He accused the Israeli government of seeking conquest and added: They are not simply war criminals, they are fools.

Maps of Meaning 13: The Force Within
from Nick Gisburne on May 29, 2007
Duration: 1750
Duration: 1750
This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 13th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com). Theme: Although unbridled encounter with chaos can be overwhelming, the nervous system is actually calibrated to encourage gradual but still transformative contact. The individual finds him or herself engaged in such contact, unconsciously, whenever the activities of life are sufficiently interesting and meaningful to temporarily eradicate self-consciousness. Under such conditions, the individual is inhabiting the "spiritual" space that exists on the border between chaos and order. This space is equivalent to the kingdom of god. The facilitation of permanent existence there is the unstated purpose of religious practice.Warning: although interest and meaning may serve as a guide to "the kingdom of god," those subjective phenomena will become pathologized in the experience of the individual who is a chronic liar. Under such conditions, possession by meaning will lead not to heaven, but to hell.

Maps of Meaning 12: Truths that Matter

This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 12th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com). Theme: Because life is uncertain, complex and terrifying, people require a shield or substantive individual strength. Culture and social identification provide a shield. Voluntary contact with the chaotic, unknown and terrifying, by contrast, provides specifically redemptive information, and helps the personality develop enough genuine strength to overcome existential terror, vengeful response to that terror, and the pathologies of ideological identification.

This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 11th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com). Theme: The movement beyond cultural schemes of meaning (religions and ideologies) can produce stasis and desperation, as the disenchanted individual once again confronts unstructured chaos. Alternatively, identity with a rigid and totalitarian ideology may be adopted. However, such identification eventually deprives life of its spontaneous and sustaining meaning, and turns the ideological adherent towards vengeful destruction.

Maps of Meaning 10: Figuring Evil

This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 10th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com). Theme: Two fundamental reactions to the terrible and uncertain conditions of life obtain. The first is dramatically represented by the figure of Cain in Genesis. The second is represented by Abel. Cain is resentful and unwilling to change, even though he is suffering and even though he has been told by the divine that the unbearable part of his suffering is self-generated. Abel, by contrast, follows the dictates of his conscience, makes the proper sacrifices to necessity, and establishes an acceptable relationship with the conditions of existence. Cain's refusal to admit to his error ultimately makes him vengeful, homicidal and destructive, as he rebels agains his self-produced fate. Cain is the father of all torturers and tyrants.

Maps of Meaning 9: Becoming a Self

This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 9th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com). Theme: The individual begins his or her life as pure, vulnerable potential, shielded in optimal circumstances by maternal care from factors beyond individual control. If such care is provided, the developing individual is then socialized into the broader cultural world. Such socialization provies order and purpose as a buttress against chaos. True individual development, howeve, means movement beyond the maternal and the cultural, and voluntary personal contact with the chaotic unknown. Such contact generates wisdom, and frees the individual from possession by ideology.

Maps of Meaning 8: Dwelling on Paradise

This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 8th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com). Theme: Our beliefs provide structure for the micro-worlds of certainty that we all inhabit. Because there is always something lurking that we do not understand, we always feel that this certainty is incomplete. Because we are curious, and capable of indefinite abstraction, we always bring those fixed paradises tumbling down. The true paradise, so to speak, must therefore be something dynamic: something associated with our capacity to bring many paradises into being, sequentially.

Maps of Meaning 7: Contemplating Genesis
from Nick Gisburne on May 29, 2007

This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 7th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com). Theme: The ancient text of Genesis provides a very sophisticated dramatic representation of the emergence of order from chaos, as a consequence of the action of consciousness or Logos, and also presents the emergence of human self-consciousness. Such emergent self-consciousness is a paradoxical gift: although it brings with it the terrible knowledge of limitation, madness and death, it also enables the voluntary and redemptive adoption of a heroic stance towards the conditions of life.

Maps of Meaning 6: Submitting to Order

Duration: 1685
This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 6th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com).Theme: Order is the antithesis of chaos. The domain of order is the domain of culture, of the previously explored and understood. Order inhibits fear, and aids in the establishment of harmonious relations between people who would otherwise fight. The discipline of order is also a precondition to freedom. However, too much order stultifies, and prevents the development of genuine creative individuality.

Maps of Meaning 5: Grappling with Fear

This half hour video from the University of Toronto was broadcast on TV Ontario (Canadian Public Television) in 2004, as the 5th of a 13-part series dealing with mythology and neuroscience. It is based on the book, Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (www. mapsofmeaning.com).Theme: The chaos out of which the world is generated is first encountered during contact with the anomalous, unknown, misunderstood or threatening. Things that are not understood are dangerous and vague. Retreat from such things is one option, but such retreat does not allow for growth or leaning. Retreat means that the unknown stays both unknown and frightening. Voluntary approach, by constrast, generates information. From that information the personality is generated.
