During the mid-1960's, right out of college, I worked as an ID checker, bouncer, maitre'd, and bartender at Big John's, a popular blues club in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood two miles north of the Loop. We featured a mix of Chicago blues artists: Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Mike Bloomfield, Howlin' Wolf, Barry Goldberg, Buddy Guy, Steve Miller, Willie Dixon, Corky Siegel, Otis Spann, Jim Schwall, Otis Rush, and a few others. Big John's was packed night after night, often with lines outside stretching around the corner, even in the winter. Most customers were white; about 10-15 percent were black. One of our regulars was Marshall Chess. Marshall Chess lived two blocks south of Big John's. His father, Leonard, and his uncle, Phil, founded and managed Chess Records. Over the years, Marshall has done well as a record company executive. You can learn more about him on Wikipedia: During those years, I often spent my nights off visiting blues clubs on the south and west sides of Chicago. Most, like Big John's, were neighborhood bars with a small stage near the back. They were usually packed. I never met Etta James. I never even heard of Etta James until I saw the movie "Rain Man" (1988) starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. There is a moving scene where Tom Cruise's character is teaching his brother, Dustin Hoffman's character (an autistic savant), how to slow dance to Etta James version of "At Last." In the years that followed, her recording of "At Last" eclipsed Glenn Miller's version, becoming the anthem for a new generation, a new era. It has been featured in movies and TV shows ever since. Not many younger people have ever heard Glenn Miller's version. That is why Etta James claims the song as her own. She has enjoyed considerable fame and success ever since. Sadly, in earlier years, her career was marred by drug addiction and imprisonment, but she bounced back -- especially after the release of "Rain Man." Etta recorded "At Last" for Chess Records in 1960. You can learn more about her on Wikipedia, too. Beyoncé's version is a remake of Etta Jame's version that she performs in "Cadillac Records" (2008) in which she plays Etta James. Etta James disses Beyoncé and President Obamaat a Jan. 28, 2009 concert in Seattle (Courtesy of TMZ) In early February 2009, Etta James told the New York Daily News that "I didn't really mean anything" by attacking Beyoncé for daring to sing her signature song for the Obamas at one of the inaugural balls. What do you think? Was Etta James just expressing "that comedian kind of attitude," as she told the Daily News, or did she mean it when she said in reference to President Obama and Beyoncé: "I tell you that woman he had singing for him, singing my song, she gonna get her ass whupped." President Obama and our First Lady, Michelle, danced to "At Last" at every one of the Inauguration Balls. Beyoncé performed at one of them and sang "At Last" for them. I really enjoyed seeing her do so. But not Etta James. But it saddens me that Glenn Miller's version of "At Last" has been lost in the shuffle in recent years. Top 40 stations wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole! Most disc jockeys and most reporters don't have a clue that Harry Warren and Mack Gordon wrote this song for Glenn Miller in 1941. You hear a snippet of it in "Sun Valley Serenade" (1941) and the entire version with Pat Friday and Ray Eberle at the beginning of "Orchestra Wives" (1942). It remains one of my favorite Miller songs after all of these years. Pat FridayRay Eberle I'd like you to listen to their versions and decide for yourself which you prefer. In my Inbox this morning.... Good afternoon Mr Spink! It's not the first time I get in touch with you, I often have the chance to listen to your beautiful Palomar Station, it's lovely music and I never get tired of it, it's always the first time. To me, this happens just listening to Glenn Miller, the Beatles and a few others. Great. Yesterday I watched on tv the first hours of Mr. Obama as President of USA. It's been deep emotion, after a long time we found again the word Hope in the future. Now it's just an emotion , that's true, but that, anyway, is something new, and we trust in it. Between the lines, through the live images from USA, we could see something special. In his speech the spirit of that country was back again, true and clear. Something old and something new. In that moment I had a sudden feeling: in that spirit I felt that a great soundtrack could have been "in the air". I said: You can say whatever you like, but in some ways, here, Glenn Miller's music may be "the perfect soundtrack" for this all. It may be perfect. To my great amazement, today, turning on the tv to hear the news...the Italian newsreel started with the words "........President Obama and wife last night danced to the sound of - AT LAST - I was speechless, you see, I was right!. Music IS magic. At LastGlenn Miller and His Orchestrawith Pat Friday and Ray Eberlefrom Orchestra Wives (1942) We trust in your new President. Too many people here in Europe had a bad image of America for such a long time. This has to change, and it has to change now! We hope so much. Thanks for your patience! God bless you and America.
