Mehdi Hassan sings pure classical ghazal ( Live ) Poet: Farhat Shehzad ***************************** About Singer, Mehdi Hassan, affectionately called Khan Sahib and titled as Shahenshah-e-Ghazal (King of Ghazals) is a legendary Pakistani-Indian Ghazal singer and a former playback singer for Lollywood. He was born in the village of Luna in Rajasthan, British India in 1927 into a family of rich traditional musicians. He claims to be the 16th generation of hereditary musicians hailing from the Kalawant. Kala means Art and Kalawant means artist (in any Indian language). He received his musical training under his father, Ustad Azeem Khan and his uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were classical musicians, well-versed in dhrupad singing. They instructed him in classical music and voice production within the framework of classical forms of thumri, dhrupad, khayal and dadra, from the young age of eight. Hassan started to perform at a young age and the first concert of dhrupad and kheyal with his elder brother is reported to have been held in Fazilka Bungla near Ferozepur[1]. After the Partition of India, 20-year-old Hassan and his family migrated to Pakistan and suffered severe financial hardships. To make ends meet, Hassan began working in a bicycle shop and later became a car and diesel tractor mechanic. Despite the hardships, his passion for music didn't wither and he kept up the daily routine of practice. Career The struggle ended when Mehdi Hassan was given the opportunity to sing on Radio Pakistan in 1952, primarily as a thumri singer, which earned him recognition within the musical fraternity. At the time, Ustad Barkat Ali Khan, Begum Akhtar and Mukhtar Begum were considered the stalwarts of ghazal gayaki. He also had a passion for Urdu poetry and began to experiment by singing ghazals on a part-time basis. He cites radio officers, Z.A. Bukhari and Rafiq Anwar as additional influences in his progression as a ghazal singer. They gave him ample opportunities to display his mastery over the ghazal on radio. He sang ghazals of all the renowned Urdu poets and his innovative style was soon appreciated by both masses and discerning audiences. Hassans voice and unique performance skills in ghazal singing were unmatched in the world of South Asian music. The 60s and 70s can be named Mehdi Hassans decades, as there was hardly any hero in the Pakistani musical scene on whom Mehdi Hassans songs were not filmed. King of Ghazals Mehdi Hassan is universally acclaimed as the finest ghazal singer of his time. His unsurpassed vocal range and his mastery over even the most difficult of raags makes him the undisputed emperor of ghazals. His popularity amongst the masses, appreciation by the masses, and continued success over five decades makes him on par with Noor Jehan in the league of the greatest Pakistani singers of all time. The ultimate tribute to his greatness was from the eternal nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar, who compared his songs to voice of god . he is only the singer whose low note are matchless among all singers of subcontinent. Parvez Mehdi and Talat Aziz are among his famous disciples who took his knowledge and rendition further to audiences. Later career Following a severe illness in the late 80s, Mehdi Hassan stepped down from playback singing. Later due to severity of his illness he completely departed from music. He now lives a secluded life in Karachi which he has made his permanent residence. Nevertheless he often visits Lahore where he spends most of his time with his children and other family members. While he was singing in the Court of Nepal's King Shah Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, he forgot the lines of his song Zindagi mein to sabhii pyar kya kerte hain. Shah, then stood from his seat and start singing the next line. This was really a great tribute to him. Awards He has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions: the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz granted to him by Gen Ayub Khan; the Pride of Performance bestowed on him by Gen Ziaul Haq; and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz conferred by Gen Pervez Musharraf. Besides the Nigar Film and Graduate Awards from Pakistan, he was presented the Saigal Award in Jalandhar, India, in 1979, whereas the Gorkha Dakshan Bahu Award was given to him in Nepal in 1983. Recently, he traveled to Dubai to receive yet another award.

Ghulam Ali - Hangama hai kyon - Ghazal This ghazal was also performed by Amanat Ali in Saregamapa 2007 ******************************** Ghulam Ali(born 1940) is a famous Pakistani ghazal singer Ali was born in the village of Kaleke in the Sialkot district of Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He belongs to a musical family his father was a vocalist and a sarangi player who gave him early training. At the age of 15, he became a student of the legendary Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, who was a master of the Patiala Gharana (Patiala School) of Hindustani music. His actual training was provided mainly by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's three brothers Barqat Ali Khan, Mubarak Ali Khan, and Amanat Ali Khan, in Lahore. All these great teachers of classical music taught him the finer nuances of classical music and his solid foundation of classical music included studying Thumri and learning to sing ragas. Career Ali started singing for Radio Lahore in 1960. Ghulam Ali's father named him "Ghulam Ali" after Bade Ghulam Ali. Along with singing ghazals, Ghulam Ali composes music for his ghazals too. His compositions are raaga-based and sometimes include a scientific mixture of raagas. He is known for blending gharana-gaayaki into ghazal and this gives his singing the capability to touch hearts. He beautifully sings Punjabi songs too. Most of his Punjabi songs have been extremely popular. Though from Pakistan, Ghulam Ali remains as popular in India as in Pakistan. He burst into the Indian scene with a Hindi film song "Chupke Chupke raat din" in B. R. Chopra's movie, 'Nikaah'. Other popular ghazals include "Hungama hai kyon barpaa" and "Awaargi, yeh dil yeh paagal Dil mera", and many more. On being questioned about Indian, Pakistani pop groups, Ghulam Ali replied, "Frankly, I am really bewildered at their style of singing. How can you sing a song by running and jumping around the stage? The stage is meant for performing not for acrobatics." Ali has also sung some beautiful ghazals like Kina Kina Timro Tasveer, Gajalu Tee Thula Thula Aankha, Lolaaeka Tee Thula and Ke Chha Ra Diun in Nepali language with Narayan Gopal, a wellknown Nepali singer, and composer Deepak Jangam. These songs were compiled in an album entitled Narayan Gopal, Ghulam Ali Ra Ma, and are popular among Nepali music lovers to this day. Nahid Akhtar - Dekha Jo mera Jalwa Film: Tallash Released on:January 23rd, 1976 Actors: Shabnum, Nadeem, Babra Sharif, Mumtaz, Masood Akhtar, Allauddin, Arunzeeb,.. Producer: Mirza Ishaq, Pervez Malik Director: Pervez Malik Music: Nisar Bazmi Singers: Naheed Akhtar, Saleem Shezad *********************************** About Nahid Akhtar, Naheed Akhtar (Nahid Akhtar) was born in Gujrat Punjab Pakistan was the most famous singer in Pakistan after Noor Jehan between 1974 and 2000. Naheed Akhtar was discovered by veteran musician M. Ashraf as a teenage sensation in the mid-1970s. She became a threat to Noor Jehan and for a while she dominated Urdu film music. Naheed Akhtar was a successful replacement for Runa Laila, who left Pakistan the same year. Her debut film was "Nanha Farishta" in 1974 and that year she climbed to the top with super hit songs in the film "Shama". Journalist Asif Ali Pota married her in the mid-1980s, when she left the film scene. Naheed Akhtar had talent for singing from her chilhood. Nahid Akhtar remained an unavoidable part of the titles of almost all Pakistani films between the mid-70's to the late 80's. In so many ways, she was the female counterpart of Ahmed Rushdie, even though coming a generation later. Nahid suddenly found her place as one of the most versatile singers around mid-70's when it turned out that she has got an unusually expressive voice that can be suited to so many diverse situations - creating the gloomiest melancholy with her television ghazal Tum say ulfat kay taqazay or Sawan kay din aye (Naag Aur Nagin), boosting the spirits up with such peppy songs as Dil tore kay mut jayyio (Waqt) or Piyar Kabhie karna na kum (Aashie), establishing a touch with spirituality with the devotional Allah hi Allah kya karo (Pehchan) and even getting herself established as the raunchiest and lewdest female voice of the time if need be: Yeh aaj mujkpo kiya hua (Naukar), Dil sanbhala na jaye (Mera Naam Hai Mohabbat), etc. Indeed there was no way escaping her in those good old days of the late 70's. Nahid's voice became for Babra Sharif what Ahmed Rushdie's voice had been for Waheed Murad. Indeed, they retained a kind of symbiotic existence on the screen throughout the following decade. With the decline of the film industry early 80's onwards Nahid had more time for television and did such memorable programmes as Sur Bahar, which gave her opportunity to display her talent in a more classical style (that particular programme was based on the music of Ameer Khusro). She has now retired from singing and lives her life completely off the screen. What a pity. Nahid Akhtar was perhaps the last audio legend of our film industry - the heydays were already over when she left and people had stopped remembering the names of the best film singers. Film:Rangeela Released on:September 11th, 1970 Actors: Nisho, Rangeela, Aqeel, Saiqa, Salma Mumtaz, Munawar Zarif Producer & Director: Rangeela Music: Kamal Ahmad Singers: Mala, Rangeela, Ahmad Rushdi, Tasawur Khanum... -------------------------------------- Tasawwar Khanum recently said. "I sang many famous hits in films during the '60s and '70s, which are still remembered by the music enthusiasts. But it's sad that even after a lot of efforts, I have been unable to convince the film people to employ my voice in their movies," Tasawwar's return to music could have aided the music directors who know Miss Madam Noor Jahan in films. Yet these music directors do not choose to employ her voice. The young singers seem to be very touchy on these matters. They do not want anybody else to take a single song from them. They feel insecure as if they don't have the talent to cling to the ranks! In her heyday, Tasawwar K sang many superb hits which include: Ve sab ton Sohniyan (Rangeela) Agar tum miljao (Imandar) Log diwaney hain (Bin Badal Barsaat) Zindagi mere yaar (Parda Na Utthao) Pyar Ka Mausam (Pyar Ka Mausam) Aesi chal main chaloon (Anmol) Zindagi zinda dili (Aansoo) Main nachoongi le ke (Mastani Mehbooba) Dekhi hai main ne teri chaal (Parde Mein Rehne Do) Barf ke farsh par Others are Vey rus ke tur paey ho sarkar, Thukra rahee hai dunya, Aaaj kal parson, loot liya re man chain etc. A good looking singer, Tasawwar sang a lot of Punjabi and Urdu songs which were lapped up by the audiences in the 70's. Nisar Bazmi employed her voice to best effect in films like Mastani Mehbooba, Anmol etc. She also sang duets. When Anmol's hit titled Aesi chaal main chaloon was first run on the radio, it was such a hit that for months nobody listened to any other song but this Bazmi sahib number, which was picturised well on Shabnum. Aisi chaal is one of the mega-hits of all time in Pakistani films music annals. Similarly, Agar tum mil jao also became a raging hit from Imandar filmed on saucy Nisho. People still listen to it with interest. In the same way her Punjabi number Ve rus ke tur paey ho sarkar also broke records of popularity in its days. Tasawwar Khanum's popularity has a history. After Zubeida Khanum, there was no singer who could bring the same vitality, naughtiness and a village belle's sensuality to the film song,s until Tasawwar came along. She wasn't traditionally gifted with a soft voice, but her songs became popular on the ingredients that were essential for commercial hits. It was difficult for any female singer to make a name for herself amidst such brilliant names like Noor Jahan, Runa Laila and Mala. Yet, Tasawwar managed to hit the jackpot with her own determination and verve. One hopes that some senior music directors of the film industry would realize her caliber and will give her and our dieing film music a chance again to fuse the same spirit in the music. They feel insecure as if they don't have the talent to cling to the ranks! In her heyday, Tasawwar K sang many superb hits which include: Ve sab ton Sohniyan (Rangila), Agar tum miljao (Imandar), Log diwaney hain (Bin Badal Barsaat), Zindagi mere yaar (Parda Na Utthao), Pyar Ka Mausam (Pyar Ka Mausam), Aesi chal main chaloon (Anmol), Zindagi zinda dili (Aansoo), Main nachoongi le ke (Mastani Mehbooba), Dekhi hai main ne teri chaal (Parde Mein Rehne Do), Barf ke farsh par Otehrs are Ve rus ke tur paey ho sarkar, Thukra rahee hai dunya, Aaaj kal parson, loot liya re man chain etc. A good looking singer, Tasawwar sang a lot of Punjabi and Urdu songs which were lapped up by the audiences in the 70's. Nisar Bazmi employed her voice to best effect in films like Mastani Mehbooba, Anmol etc. She also sang duets. When Anmol's hit titled Aesi chaal main chaloon was first run on the radio, it was such a hit that for months nobody listened to any other song but this Bazmi number, which was picturised well on Shabnum. Aisi chaal is one of the mega-hits of all time in Pakistani films music annals. Similarly, Agar tum mil jao also became a raging hit from Imandar filmed as a saucy Nisho. People still listen to it with interest. In the same way her Punjabi number Ve rus ke tur paey ho sarkar also broke records of popularity in its days. Tasawwar Khanum's popularity has a history. After Zubeida Khanum, there was no singer who could bring the same vitality, naughtiness and a village belle's sensuality to the film song, until Tasawwar came along. One hopes that some senior music directors of the film industry would realise her caliber and will give her a chance againto fuse the same spirit in the music.
