Aero-TV Visits With Rod Machado For A Serious Talk About Flight Safety (Part 3)

Rod Talks About In-Flight Emergencies One of the better reasons to attend the popular aviation events around the nation is the opportunity to enjoy the wit and wisdom of some of aviation's true experts... but no one plays as well to an aviation crowd as aviation humorist, flight instructor and safety advocate, Rod Machado. Rod is a professional speaker who travels across the United States and Europe delighting his listeners with upbeat and lively presentations. Machado truly loves mixing it up with the audience. His unusual talent for simplifying the difficult and adding humor to make the lessons stick has made him a popular lecturer both in and out of aviation. Rod s presentations include topics as diverse as Risk Assessment, Defensive Flying and Handling In-flight Emergencies. His non-aviation topics include: Safety Awareness programs, Humor as a Communication Tool and The Lost Art of Thinking. Flying since 1970 and instructing since 1973, Rod has over 8,000 hours of flight time earned the hard way one CFI hour at a time. Since 1977 he has taught hundreds of flight instructor revalidation clinics and safety seminars and he was named the 1991 Western Region Flight Instructor of the Year. Rod holds all fixed-wing (powered) flight instructor ratings as well as an airline transport pilot license. He also owns an A36 Bonanza. He is AOPA s National CFI spokesman and a National Accident Prevention Counselor appointed by the FAA in Washington DC. But most of all, he is a passionate and positive spokesman for aviators everywhere and an excellent proponent for all things aviation. We caught up with Rod at the 2008 AOPA Fly-In, last June where he gave an extensive preparation dedicated to a stirring discussion on in-flight emergencies. The seminar notes opined that, "With a little caution, good judgment, and reasonable equipment, you can expect to fly safely for most of your piloting days. Once in a great while, you may run into a rare in-flight emergency. This is when knowing exactly what to do to solve the problem is most important. Rod will provide you with ideas for successfully avoiding and coping with some of the most serious airborne problems. To fly confidently means to be knowledgeable about potential problems and knowing their solutions." The Air Safety Foundation's David Wright Updates Aero-TV On All Things ASF

ASF's Vice President of Operations Talks About Air Safety Programs AOPA... well-known as the 600 pound gorilla of aviation associations, has a cousin that isn't as well-known... though it should be. Cognizant of the issues involved in aviation safety -- and the many controversies surrounding how to deal with them, the Air safety Foundation has NOT sat on the sidelines of this issue... but instead has taken a leading role in the examination of a myriad of safety issues and the subsequent education of the pilot population so that those issues might be better understood, throughout the industry. The AOPA Air Safety Foundation is 'a nonprofit, tax exempt organization promoting safety and pilot proficiency in general aviation through quality training, education, research, analysis, and the dissemination of information.' Aero-TV sat down with several ASF and AOPA staffers over the last few months to get a feel for the organization and the people that staff it... this time catching up with David Wright, ASF's Vice President of Operations. David joined ASF in November 2002 and serves as the vice president of operations. In that role he is responsible for all of ASF s day-to-day operations in support of the Foundation s strategic objectives. He also contributes to the live and online ASF safety seminars that reach more than 100,000 pilots yearly with updated flight safety information. He holds an MBA from the University of Maryland and a bachelor s degree in aeronautics from the University of North Dakota, and has been both lead flight instructor for UND and an airline pilot with USAir Express. He holds an FAA commercial pilot certificate, is a flight instructor with both instrument and multi-engine ratings, and has logged about 2,500 flight hours. Aero-TV: AOPA's Greg Romano Talks About The 'Mission'

Duration: 416
AOPA's VP Of Public Relations 'Hails' (Pun Intended) From NOAA Phil Boyer has served admirably as the figurehead and decision maker for one of aviation's most productive and progressive organizations... but one man (even the leader) does not an organization make. Late last year, Greg Romano recently joined AOPA as its Vice President, Public Relations, bringing more than 20 years of public relations experience -- most recently at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - and a strong aviation background to the position. We have worked with Greg during his tenure at NOAA on weather issues related to aviation, said AOPA President Phil Boyer. His depth of knowledge and passion for his work will make him an asset to AOPA. In addition, Greg is an instrument-rated private pilot with a true understanding of general aviation. Romano is overseeing AOPA s Media and Public Relations department, with responsibility for promoting a positive image of AOPA and general aviation to the public, presenting AOPA s position on issues through media interviews and outreach, and managing AOPA Project Pilot and AOPA s presence at aviation events and airshows. Prior to joining AOPA, Romano was Director of Public Affairs at NOAA s National Weather Service, where his responsibilities included working with aviation organizations on weather-related issues, serving as the National Weather Service s spokesman to national and local media, and managing crisis communications, news conferences and other media events. His public relations career has spanned more than two decades, working primarily with major public relations firms in Los Angeles before relocating to the Washington, DC, area in 2003. Upon taking on his new responsibilities at AOPA, Romano said that he considered his new position at AOPA a dream job. Aero-TV sat down with Greg several weeks ago, when his chair was barely warm and chatted with him about the mission of AOPA and the work he sees ahead both for himself as well as the organization itself. Aero-TV Surveys AOPA Members: 'How Are Sky-Rocketing Fuel Costs Affecting Your Flying?' (Part 2)

The Second Of Our "Three-Question" Event Surveys From The 2008 AOPA Fly-In ANN's ever-mobile Aero-TV crews had a BALL at the recently concluded 2008 AOPA Fly-In.... especially since the torrential rains of years past failed to make an appearance and we got stay dry for a while. We mingled with hundreds of AOPA members, gauging their concerns and reactions to a number of questions and topics we raised... giving rise to the second question in our infamous "Three-Question" survey of AOPA members... namely, 'how are the sky-rocketing fuel prices aviation is experiencing affecting YOUR flying?' Check out the second of our three survey questions posed at the 2008 AOPA Fly-In to see how the costs of fuel are impacting the aviation world. Each year, as a "thank you" to its 415,000++ members, AOPA hosts an Annual Fly-In and Open House. As in past years, some 100 aviation exhibitors were available for viewing, as well as over 40 display aircraft. Seminars on aviation safety were offered, including presentations by Ron Machado and AOPA President Phil Boyer. Tours of the AOPA headquarters and non-stop opportunities to meet staff members were also offered throughout the day. Aero-TV was on site to enjoy the warm comradery of this event (in more ways than one... in the 100+ degree heat!), and in addition to a number of neat features (including the intriguing interview with Phil Boyer just a few weeks back), we also used the opportunity to conduct one of our favorite feature programs -- "Three Question" Special Event Surveys -- covering the topics of AOPA member satisfaction with the organization, the effect of rising fuel prices on personal flying activity, and what was catching everyone's attention at this year's event. The First In One Of Our "Three-Question" Event Surveys From The 2008 AOPA Fly-In AOPA... the undisputed champion of aviators all over the country, is about to see some serious changes with the upcoming passing of the torch from Phil Boyer to Craig Fuller. But... what does that mean to the rank and file who have come to expect (and demand) a high level of response from the world's largest GA organization? Quite a lot, we think, especially when you factor in just how positive the rep of AOPA and President Boyer has become. Check out the first of our three survey questions posed at the 2008 AOPA Fly-In to see just how positive that rep really is... 'The Hardest Working Guy In GA Talks About Life At The Helm Of AOPA' As part of our end-of-year wrap-up, ANN posited that if AOPA, as the world's largest pilot's association, is the 600 pound gorilla of aero-organizations; then there should be little question that AOPA President, Phil Boyer, ranks as 'King Kong.' Humorous as that title might be, the description is pretty much on target when you measure the man against the job he has done for the 415,000++ members of the AOPA -- and aviators, in general. Throughout the industry, few will doubt that Phil Boyer is one of the hardest working guys in GA... if not in all of aviation. Phil has been a tireless advocate for the value of GA, and an aggressive soldier in the fight against all those who would deprive us of the freedoms and privileges we have as flyers. Still, it was the battle over User Fees where Phil Boyer identified himself as a "scrapper" and a guy who would not quit... and aviation benefited greatly from having a watchdog at the ready. Phil is a thoroughly unique character on the general aviation scene... he's personable, professional, thoroughly in charge, and yet has the talent to delegate tasks amongst his troops aggressively so that things that need attention get done -- and get done 'right now.' I've worked with this guy for a number of years -- I've seen him elated, I've seen him angry, I've seen him frustrated, and I've seen him attacked from a number of corners... but I've never seen him beaten -- not even for the slightest moment... and despite the fact that GA has been fighting some of the biggest challenges we've known in years, Boyer not only is ready for the fight -- he seems more specifically suited to this task than anyone we know. Phil Boyer became President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association on January 1, 1991, adding onto a career as a senior-level broadcasting executive and general aviation (GA) advocate. A 7,000+ hour instrument and ME-rated pilot, Phil has been flying for more than 30 years, and 15 of them as an aircraft owner. In addition, Boyer is President of the International Council of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Associations (IAOPA), representing pilots and aircraft operators in 66 countries. ANN and Aero-TV sat down with him for an interview during the recent 2008 AOPA Fly-IN and talked with him about his first days as president of AOPA, the value of the organization, the ongoing mission of AOPA and all manner of GA topics... Aero-TV: AOPA/Air Safety Foundation Looks To 2008

More Online Courses Than Ever Before One of the most powerful forces in all that is good about General Aviation is AOPA's Air Safety Foundation... an organization that wants to do nothing more than keep you from getting hurt. The AOPA Air Safety Foundation is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization promoting safety and pilot proficiency in general aviation through quality training, education, research, analysis, and the dissemination of information. But... most important, they're getting RESULTS. ASF notes that "...Back in 1950, the total accident rate was 46.68 accidents per 100,000 flight hours (the 100,000-hour measure being the statistical standard); the fatal accident rate was 5.17 per 100,000 flight hours. Today, both those numbers have plunged dramatically 7.05 and 1.26 per 100,000 hours, respectively. Those represent 85-percent and 76-percent drops. Fifty years ago, newspapers and accident reports were replete with stories of fatal buzzing accidents, hundreds of fatal forays by VFR-only pilots into instrument weather, and scads of fatal stall-spin accidents. These sorts of accidents still plague us now, but what a difference 50 years has made." Tis year, the Air Safety Foundation is using the web to present more safety and knowledge related course material than ever before... ASF's Jennifer Storm tells Aero-TV About How The Air Safety Foundation Is Looking Out For YOU! FMI: www.aopa.org/asf Copyright 2008, Aero-News Network, Inc. ALL Rights Reserved.
