I've often wondered how former Olympic athletes feel right about this time, on the eve of yet another Olympic Games. Do they wallow in nostalgia, national anthems taking them back to distant memories of zeal and triumph? What about the ones who underperformed? Do they anguish every four years, reliving what could have, should have, would have been when their one and only time was upon them?

This week, we look at the architecture of big ideas, in LA past and China present.

Hiroshi Fuji is a social activist. Fuji creates installations, performances, and events that focus on community. He uses materials deemed useless or valueless by society – such as empty water bottles, and old toys – to create works of art. One of his projects is Kaekko , a project that simulates the model of a bazaar: Children exchange their unwanted toys, creating a new market and new values for formerly worthless items. For Lucky Number Seven , SITE Santa Fe Seventh International Biennial, he created Kaeru . As Hiroshi Fuji states: Kaeru starts with a bazaar where children bring unwanted toys to exchange. Local people involve themselves in making artworks from the materials brought to the bazaar. Those works are the interwoven with elements at key places in Santa Fe. This video shows Kaeru at the Museum of International Folk Art on Museum Hill in Santa Fe, and the Santa Fe Opera Parking Lot. Other venues are Fine Arts for Children Teens and the National Dance Institute of New Mexico. At Art Santa Fe we met with Ravikumar Kashi, represented by Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore and Chennai, India. Ravikumar Kashi is one of the few artists who sculpt with paper. In Santa Fe, he showed the two sculptures Books and Armor . In this video, Ravikumar Kashi talks about the pieces on display at Art Santa Fe, and his work in general. Ravikumar Kashi was born in Bangalore in 1968. He completed his B.F.A. in Painting from College of Fine Arts, Bangalore in 1988. In 2001 he studied handmade papermaking under J. Parry at the Papermaking Resource, Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, UK, with a grant from the Charles Wallace India Trust. Since 1991 he has had several solo and group shows all over the world. He was selected for ‘Best of Discovery’ section in Sh 07, Art Fair, held in Shanghai, China. Wäre ich Journalist, ich würde mich auf die Künstlerinnen und Künstler vorbereiten, mich mit ein paar Fragen präparieren und dann als Bestätigung meiner Lesefähigkeiten die (bereits bekannten) Antworten geben lassen. Doch das geht bei mir nie so. Ich mache auch keine Interviews im eigentlichen Sinn, sondern führe offene Gespräch. Die beinhaltet natürlich ein gewisses Risiko. So kann ein solches Gespräch mal in eine Tiefe fallen und muss dann gerettet werden. Aber das will ich ja genau, dass ist das Spannende. Solche offenen Gespräch fördern auch Ungesuchtes zu Tage.
