Kerstin Drechsel: Mittelerde / September Berlin Gallery, Berlin
from VernissageTV art tv October 22, 2007
September is a new gallery that opened up this September in Charlottenstrasse 1 in Berlin, near former Checkpoint Charly. The gallery is run by Oliver Koerner von Gustorf und Frank Müller. The gallery started its exhibition program with a solo show with new works by Berlin-based artist Kerstin Drechsel. The exhibition entitled Mittelerde (Middle Earth) shows a series of paintings and a group of sculptures. With the paintings Kerstin Drechsel examines the apartment of a Heavy Metal fan. The sculptures are based on the forms of poured lead figures. Greatly enlarged and sprayed in white industrial enamel, these relics from a New Year s Eve ritual resemble semi-abstract shapes upon which all manner of esoteric or art historical interpretation can be projected (excerpt from the press release (pdf)). On the occasion of the exhibition Mittelerde, Vice Versa Verlag is publishing a catalogue that features an interview with the artist as well as an essay by Frank Wagner. Tsang Kin-Wah at Yvon Lambert New York Project Space
from VernissageTV art tv October 09, 2007
Yvon Lambert s Project Space in Chelsea, New York, presents Tsang Kin-Wah. Tsang Kin-Wah lives and works in Hongkong. The works presented at Yvon Lambert Project Space New York center around sex as one of the motivations of human beings. The works on display are to a large extent text-based. In the main room text on the walls is intermittendly illuminated by two lights. The second room features wallpapers and paintings. The exhibition will consist of floral patterns of text and paintings mingled with rhythmic pulses of light The walls of the second gallery have been covered with traditional Chinese lotus patterns in soothing blue and pink, a pattern that repeats in accompanying paintings. While the lotus flower is closely associated with Buddhism in the East to symbolize purity, upon closer inspection Tsang’s flowers spell out pornographic texts. Tsang Kin-Wah (b.1976) was born in China and is a graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Camberwell College of Arts at the London Institute. (excerpts from the press release). Baltazar Torres: A perfect day in a perfect world
from VernissageTV art tv September 20, 2007
The Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation in Mallorca hosts until September 23rd four installations by Portuguese artist Baltazar Torres. Known for his work with miniatures that create vast scenes which reflect on issues of ecology and confront the human being with the planet itself. By establishing a playful relation of scales, Torres takes the viewer to experience a panoramic view of the subject he is representing. This exhibition focuses on the city as “a world of structural conflicts that we must inevitably live with”. Ridiculously monstrous cities in which humans dwell suffocated by their own rubbish, surrounded by roads and construction sites, paint a grim picture of our environment and reminds us of a situation that is all but natural.
