Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland on a 31-year-old statutory rape charge earlier this year, and many Hollywood stars immediately rallied to his defense. Celebrity trials aren't new to us, but the particular ugliness of rape and child abuse still seem to get glossed over when there's a big star standing accused. But do we all learn something from public trials and the public discussions that come in their wake? As Polanski remains under house arrest, we ask Trish Kinney, author of Silver Platter Girl , Michael Musto,Village Voice columnist and author of Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back , and Dominic Lawson, columnist for The Independent, if any good can come of a trial, and why stars seem to be given a free pass on horrific behavior. Historian Howard Zinn's most famous works, A People's History of the United States, and its companion volume, Voices of A People's History of the United States , have inspired millions to take a different look at their history. The documentary The People Speak, airing on the History Channel this Sunday, December 13, brings those voices to life. Actors Harris Yulin of Scarface and Q'orianka Kilcher of The New World were two of the many actors who participated, and they joined us to discuss the film. We also have clips from The People Speak featuring Marisa Tomei and John Legend performing with Benjamin Bratt. The Copenhagen climate talks are still going on, and Jessy Tolkan, executive director of the Energy Action Coalition, joins us from Copenhagen to talk about her work with youth fighting for a clean, just energy future. Senator Bernie Sanders put a hold on Obama's renomination of Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke for a second term. In this clip from Brave New Films, Sanders calls once again to break up the big banks -- that have gotten even bigger under Bernanke -- and calls for transparency from the Fed. With the holidays approaching, it's time for heartwarming movies on the television. But the real world isn't a very heartwarming place these days -- people are still losing jobs and struggling to buy food, let alone gifts. We know who had a wonderful year, though, with our money: big banks. We have video from BanksterUSA reanimating a classic holiday story that isn't so far from our own situation.

A new young artists prize was announced recently. Whoopee! In a society that does all too little to encourage those who encourage us to imagine, and think and feel in new ways, a new fund supporting artists, especially young artists, is cause for celebration. So I was feeling cheery as I read the write-up -- until I went to the flip page. There the pictures told the story. What was described as a new young artists' prize "infused with democracy & star power" had an entirely male panel of advisers. And there they were in black and white -- in fact almost entirely white. It's almost 2010. Does anyone know where the Guerrilla Girls are? In years past, feminist masked avengers stalked the art world for a while. With data and humor and some enormous gorilla masks, anonymous women of the art world tagged, postered and pestered the most prestigious art galleries and museums. One of their most famous featured a nude in a gorilla mask and read: Do women have to be naked to get into US museums? Less than 3 % of the artists in the Metropolitan Museum are women, but 83 % of the nudes are female. We're not talking ancient history. Those were 2004 statistics. The numbers had grown worse since the poster first appeared twenty years earlier. Back in the 80s they asked in a poster: "When racism and sexism are no longer fashionable, what will your art collection be worth?" Still good questions. Still infuriating challenges. Guerrilla Girls are still out there. Curators, funders. Beware. The F Word is a regular commentary by Laura Flanders, the host of GRITtv which broadcasts weekdays on satellite TV (Dish Network Ch. 9415 Free Speech TV) on cable, and online at GRITtv.org and TheNation.com. Peter McGough - Artist

Peter McGough - Artist

For over 30 years, the art duo of Peter McGough and David McDermott have been living as though it s the end of the 19th century. From an 1800 s townhouse in the East Village they created their art by candlelight, lived without modern appliances and traveled through Manhattan on horseback complete with top hats and the finest couture from nearly a century ago. As painters, photographers, playwrights and filmmakers, the artists came of age during the same East Village art scene that made superstars of Keith Haring (their one-time roommate) and Julian Schnabel (who s championed their work). Notorious in their own right and exhibited locally through Chelsea s prestigious Chime s are quick to dismiss the notion of dandyism, with the success of Lord Whimsy s The Affected Provincial s Almanack, which is being made into a movie starring Johnny Depp, and the trend of throwback American gentlemen attire and etiquette, hopefully more people will be introduced to the beautiful and artistic world that McDermott & McGough have created.
