Jenny Holzer is considered as one of the most popular contemporary artists. Holzer is known for her use of words and ideas in public space. In 1982 she publicised her statements and aphorisms ( truisms ) on one of Times Square s gigantic LED billboards, in 2008 she created a site-specific light projection for the newly renovated facade of the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum in New York. Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel, Switzerland, is now presenting Jenny Holzer s first large sale exhibition in a Swiss museum. The focus is on recent works, some of which have never before been shown in Europe. On display are Jenny Holzer s famous LED installations, combining poetic, socio-critical, and political texts and visual effects, as welll as paintings and sculptures. The exhibition is supplemented by a selection of works the artist has chosen from the Beyeler Collection (Giacometti, Picasso, Malevich, Bacon). The presentation of Jenny Holzer s work is not confined to the museum space. The show extends outdoors to the public space. Jenny Holzer conceived light projections on key buildings and sites in Basel and Zürich. These will only be on view on special nights. The exhibition has been conceived in close cooperation with the artist and the MCA, Chicago, and curated by Elizabeth A. T. Smith and Philippe Büttner. The exhibition at Fondation Beyeler runs until January 24, 2010. Jenny Holzer at Fondation Beyeler in Riehen / Switzerland. Opening reception, October 31, 2009. Sophie Taeuber-Arp: Avant-garde Pathways at the Museo Picasso Málaga is the first retrospective of the work of Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp in Spain. The show presents over 130 exhibits that include paintings, drawings, collages, textiles, puppets, plans, photographs, sculptures and furniture. The exhibition is divided into three sections: Broken Rhythm examines the work from her earliest period, in which Dada and Constructivism coexist openly, side by side; Inhabiting Spaces explains the artist’s contribution to interior design and architecture; and Living Geometry focuses on her actual geometric compositions. The exhibition is curated by Estrella de Diego, Professor of Contemporary Art at the Complutense University in Madrid. In this video, Estrella de Diego talks about the concept of the exhibition, the scope of Sophie Taeuber-Arp s work, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp s influence on her contemporaries. She also lets us know what the most surprising findings were during the research for the exhibition and identifies a work that for her expresses the essence of Sophie Taeuber-Arp s oeuvre. Estrella de Diego has been a guest lecturer at universities in Spain and abroad, and has curated numerous exhibitions, including Lost Bodies. Photography and the Surrealists (Fundación La Caixa, 1996) and Warhol on Warhol (La Casa Encendida, 2007). Her research focuses on gender theory and visual studies, subjects on which she has written widely. Her books include Tristísimo Warhol (Very Sad Warhol), Editorial Siruela, Madrid, 1999; Querida Gala. Las vidas ocultas de Gala Dalí (Dear Gala. The Hidden Lives of Gala Dalí), Espasa, 2003; and Maruja Mallo, Fundación Mapfre, 2008. Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) was born in Davos, Switzerland. Sophie Täuber studied at the School of Applied Arts in St. Gallen (1908-1910). Not everyone knows that Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga. The Museo Picasso Málaga was created in response to Pablo Picasso s desire for his work to be seen in the city where he was born in 1881. The initial idea for the museum arose in 1953, from the contacts that took place between Pablo Picasso and the Provincial Delegate for Fine Arts in Málaga. In this video, the new artistic director of the museum, José Lebrero Stals, explains why it took 30 years until a museum with his work was realized in his home town. He also talks about the origins of the permanent collection of the museum, the museum s departments and his future plans. As he points out, the museum will have a close look at the influence Pablo Picasso still has on contemporary artists. In a temporary exhibition, the museum is currently showing a retrospective exhibition on the work of the Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp. An exhibition walk-through and interview with the show s curator Estrella de Diego follows in the next episode. The Museo Picasso Málaga in Málaga, Spain, is run by the Foundation Museo Picasso de Málaga and the Foundation Paul, Christine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso. The Paul, Christine and Bernanrd Ruiz-Picasso Foundation is the owner of the Collection, while the Museo Picasso de Málaga Foundation owns the museum buildings. Museo Picasso Málaga, Spain. During Frieze Art Fair 2009, The Embassy, a multi-disciplinary group show, presented works by Marco Brambilla, Terence Koh, Rosey Chan, Tom Gallant, Alastair Mackie, Oliver Clegg, Wolfe von Lenkiewicz, Bruce French, Henry Hudson, Michael Lisle-Taylor, Laurence Owen, Karim Rabik, Hugo Wilson and Yarisal Kublitz. Curated by Dellal and Xerxes Cook, the exhibition was intended to be a parody of outmoded cultural diplomacy in the form of an anonymous country’s embassy, a dystopia whose tyrannical government has tested the patience of its people and brought them to tipping point. The show was produced by Alex Dellal s 20 Hoxton Square Projects, in collaboration with Zoom Art Projects. A mixture of painting, sculpture and installation, works featured in The Embassy include a national anthem by the pianist Rosey Chan, a presidential palace built from mud by Alastair Mackie, a flag by Tom Gallant, and former service man, Michael Lisle-Taylor will present his Tournament of the Dirty Nurse, an ornately embroidered boxing ring still covered in the blood, sweat and tears from bouts that have taken place within it. Other works include paintings on old school desks by Oliver Clegg, lungs in three stages of the pulmonary cycle shock, agitation and panic by Hugo Wilson and caricature regal portraits by Henry Hudson in his distinctive plasticine style. Antony Gormley: One & Other / Finale
from VernissageTV art tv on October 21, 2009
Duration: 0
Duration: 0
At 9 a.m. on Wednesday 14th October 2009, the last participant of British artist Antony Gormley s One Other project, Emma Burns, stepped onto the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in London. The 30 year old medical photographer from Darlington is one of 2,400 people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures and from all over the UK which have participated in this unique piece of art. They have travelled from as far afield as Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands to Belfast, Northern Ireland to be part of this collective portrait of the UK of 2009. Antony Gormley s One Other has seen a different person take their place on the Fourth Plinth every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days. The project has been commissioned by the Mayor of London and produced by Artichoke in partnership with Sky Arts, and supported by Arts Council England. The participants used her hour on the plinth in most different ways: There were activists, raising awareness for causes such as animal welfare, the environment, and human rights; creatives from painters to dancers who brought their art to the plinth; people who promoted themselves or their companies; and participants who simply did nothing. A full list of plinthers profiles can be found at www.oneandother.co.uk. Altogether 2,400 participants were chosen at random by computer algorithm from nearly 35,000 applications received via the website www.oneandother.co.uk and through post. There was no audition process. The only four criteria – participants must be aged 16 or over and must live, or be staying in, the UK, an equal number of men and women were chosen, and the population of the UK was represented proportionally by choosing a certain number of people from each region. Antony Gormley said: “Art should be for everyone, this was an experiment to see whether everyone could be involved in making it. Who can be represented in art? How can we make it? How can we experience it? These are questions that have exercised me for years. I am inspired and given hope by what we have done this last three months. Whatever goes on the plinth hereafter the square will never be the same; the memory of this summer’s living sculpture in all its diversity is indelible.” Antony Gormley was born in London in 1950. He has participated in major group shows such as the Venice Biennale and the Kassel Documenta 8. Angel of the North and Quantum Cloud on the Thames in Greenwich are amongst the most known examples of contemporary British sculpture. The Fourth Plinth project is funded by the Mayor of London and Arts Council England, London. It involves a rolling program of contemporary art commissions to be installed temporarily on the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square. Previous projects have been realized by Marc Quinn, Thomas Schütte, Mark Wallinger, Bill Woodrow, Rachel Whiteread. The next work to be installed as part of the Fourth Plinth commissioning process will be a scale replica of Nelson s ship, HMS Victory, in a giant glass bottle, by Yinka Shonibare. Jim Hodges: Love, etc. / Centre Pompidou, Paris / Interview

Currently, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France, is showing works by the American artist Jim Hodges, titled Jim Hodges: Love, etc. It s the first personal exhibition devoted to Jim Hodges by a major European institution. On display are around sixty of his works, offering a panorama of the unique world of this artist. On occasion of his solo show at the Centre Pompidou, Christophe Ecoffet spoke with Jim Hodges about his work. Jim Hodges was born in 1957 in Washington State. In his work, Jim Hodges deals with fragility, temporality, love and death by employing and being inspired by the vocabulary of nature. His very contrasting work can be minimalist, reflected in the sobriety of some of his pieces, but it can also be Baroque, reflected in the exuberance of his work, the richness of the materials used and the stunning, iridescent colours that he employs. The artist explores modest materials like paper, fabric flowers and pastilles of colour, as much as more sophisticated materials like gold leaf. His works, influenced by nature and literature, but also by spirituality, combine these materials with the meticulous precision of collage work, sewing, assembling and cutting out. Whether it is fine cobwebs made of silver chain, cut-up photographs, assembly of musical partitions, pinned flowers or broken mirrors which describe another image of reality, through his work Hodges expresses his original vision of a world marked as much by beauty and joie de vivre as by illness and death. If she ever wondered how many people fit into her gallery space, now Alison Jacques knows. The opening of the current exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: A Season in Hell reminded visitors more of a Guinnes Book World Record attempt than a vernissage. The reason for this rush was obviously the announcement that the American singer-songwriter and artist Patti Smith would perform at the opening. VernissageTV captured the event in this video, which is a short version of a full-length version that will be up on our HD page soon. Apart from the exhibition, the video shows Patti Smith performing her song Because the Night in an a capella version with support from the audience. Robert Mapplethorpe: A Season in Hell brings together a range of works in a variety of media, including rarely seen collages. For the first time in a European gallery, 5 major early works are on display, a series of collages from 1968-69 when Robert Mapplethorpe was living with Patti Smith at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. Drawing on the Catholic culture of his upbringing, Mapplethorpe was inspired to make shrine-like works out of a broad range of materials, from menʼs underwear to prayer cards. However these works, both formally and substantially, become transformed more into objects of fetish than images of devotion, revealing the incessant influence of his religious background on Mapplethorpeʼs life and art, and his irreverent and rebellious relationship to it. As Mapplethorpe himself said ‘A church has a certain magic and mystery for a child…. It still shows in how I arrange things. Itʼs always little altars.’ Later in his career Mapplethorpe became more renowned for his photography, yet the themes of Heaven and Hell, the sacrehis work. (Excerpt from the press release). John Baldessari: Pure Beauty will bring together more than 130 works and examine the principal concerns of this legendary Californian artist. With humour and irony, Baldessari’s work dissects the ideas underlying artistic practice and questions the historically accepted rules of how to make art. Women are Heroes is a project and an exhibition by the artist JR that coincided with this year s Nuit Blanche in Paris, France. For the Women are Heroes project, JR has been traveling to such countries as Kenya, Liberia and Sierra Leone, to take portraits of more than 70 women around the world. It s the third phase of his 28 Millimetre project, taking its name from the wide-angle lens he uses. Around the Ile Saint-Louis, JR and his team pasted up portraits, studies and other photos from the Women project in huge formats on bridges, the embankments and a City of Paris building. JR conceived a Street Audio Guide system that enables passers-by to dial a free number from their mobile phones, to hear interviews with portrayed women and their life-stories. VernissageTV correspondent Christophe Ecoffet met JR during the installation of his large scale photographs in Paris. In this video, JR talks about his work in general and the concept behind his current installation in Paris. The open air installation around the Ile Saint-Louis is on display from October 3 to November 2, 2009. An exhibition with two video installations that look back over the whole project runs until October 23. John Bock: The Greased Bendsteering… – Lecture / Fashion Show at HKW Berlin
from VernissageTV art tv on October 02, 2009

German artist John Bock s event at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin was announced as a lecture, bearing a rather long title – and turned out to be an entertaining fashion show with weird vogue, underground action and some animals that were not injured. John Bock s show Die abgeschmierte Knicklenkung im Gepäck verheddert sich im weissen Hemd (The greased bendsteering in the luggage gets tangled up with the white shirt) is described by the organizers as a GlitterMotterRun of Quasi Me s. Wrappings bend into analytical diagrams. The animalistic Existo sprays lubing-sparks into the Recipient-Cuboid. Turnaroundround round around from beginning over Now-Time to the end of Later-Time with have hair nice. The same in German: Einen GlidderModderlauf der Quasi-Me s. You don t understand a thing? Don t complain. As art aficionado you should be used to cryptical catalog texts and press releases. But if you know what it means, please send an equally unobscured explanation / translation of it to the VernissageTV HQ. We promise to publish it. Even if it s in the Libyan dialect Muammar Gadafi uses. The lecture itself was entertaining indeed. Although some art professionals complained about being bored by the show. Quote: Real fashion shows are far more exciting and too much fashion, too little John Bock . Well, I m not a frequent guest at Karl s or Tom s shows, so I wasn t bored. That s a lot for me because one of the reasons I love contemporary art is that I m not forced to wait for the concert to be over when I enter a gallery. But yes, there was a little too much fashion and too little John Bock, and as my friend Philippe is Dada in text and person, I wasn t too much impressed by the KnicklenkungDadaBlaba either. Conclusion: The lecture / fashion show was a pleasant surprise, and the cotton swabs, with which I identify him, had also their appearance. John Bock was suggested by Rirkrit Tiravanija for The Spirit of the Haus, the events celebrating the 20th birthday of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. His fashion show has been performed on September 25 and 26, 2009. VernissageTV filmed the performance on September 26, 2009. Models: Tatjana Axt, Eva Gärtner, Francesco Pillino, Sebastian Gottschalk, Luen Wong, Max Coly, Lucy Mullican, Caroline Adam, Sonja Klinge, Maria Romero, Charleen Richter, Hannah Früh, Anna Sartison, Caroine Gerbeckx.
