This is a demo of the first e-health service that really measures your physiological signals. It uses your webcam and transform it into a health sensor. Based on optical propagation in biological tissues, it captures skin reflected light to extract hemoglobin variations and thus cardiovascular activity.Author: SensCare Tags: heart attack aryhtmea cardiovascular myocard telemedecine e-health webcam optics biological tissue cardio artery occlusion detection Posted: 12 November 2009 Rating: 0.0 Votes: 0

Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis

from Favorites of Neil708 on February 09, 2009
Duration: 206
http://www.nucleusinc.com This 3d medical animation illustrates the story of how the buildup of cholesterol plaque causes a heart attack (myocardial infarction) from a blocked coronary artery due to atherosclerosis, which is chronic inflammation of the blood vessels. Beginning with damage to the endothelial arterial wall, the animation shows how a white blood cell entering the wall of the artery differentiates (changes) into a macrophage, grabbing and digesting cholesterol. As the cell does its job, it transforms into a foam cell, which, unfortunately, becomes part of the plaque within the blood vessel wall. Ultimately, over a period of years, the plaque grows and ruptures the blood vessel wall, spilling into the blood stream and eventually blocking the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) supplying the left ventricle. The animation ends showing an external view of the heart with dark area representing the death of the ventricle wall.

Nanomatrix Coating For Stents Promises Improvements

Nanomatrix Coating For Stents Promises Improvements

from Games and ME on November 10, 2008
Duration: 131
BlazerCast for November 11, 2008: A nanomatrix for stent coating designed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) mimics natural endothelium, the substance that lines blood vessels, and promises the potential to prevent post-operative tissue scaring along the blood vessel wall, greatly reducing the possibility of future thrombosis, or blockage at the stent site. This next generation nanotechnology could prove vital to reducing coronary artery disease, the number one cause of death in the United States, said Ho-Wook Jun, Ph.D., a UAB assistant professor of Biomedical Engineering and principal investigator on the discovery.
