Phil Clevenger is the man behind the Lightroom user interface. Phil and I sat down to chat about what brought him to Adobe and what he learned from his time at MetaCreations designing rule-bending interfaces for software like Bryce and Kai s PhotoSoap. He also gives some hints at some possible directions of the Lightroom UI, and his philosophy around the evolution of user interfaces in general. ]]>

10755713 Tim Barrus: Sex and Genocide http://www.mefeedia.com/entry/tim-barrus-sex-and-genocide/10755713/
From : recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
I'm a bad guy. I'm used to it. A few lifetimes ago, I wrote an End of the World scenario, apocalypse-gone-mad; a book called GENOCIDE. Since that time, about a zillion people have confronted me not with any of the issues I brought up in the book, but with what a bad title for a book it was. I had to laugh. I'm still laughing. Back then, I didn't think anyone would get it. And no one ever did. Like most of the things I write, it all goes down into some black hole and the vacuum or gravity of The Utterly Irrelevant sucks it up and spits it out as Xray material on the other side of the universe. I liked the title. I did it for me. If I had called it Little Mary Sunshine Wrote a Book for Random House and Everyone Lived Happily Ever After, the result would have been the same. Those of us who write books frequently suffer from the illusion that what we do is important. Give me a fucking break. I don't think what we do moves so much as a leaf on a tree in the woods. We attach significance to books but I am not convinced the culture does. That significance seems to be pretty much limited to the people like us. It doesn't transcend. And then, there's written English. I have worked all summer on the boys' Writing in English skills. Getting them to sit down (the topic was the Image of the Bad Guy) to write something is like pulling teeth. Except for Kilian, of course. So they've read GENOCIDE. There was some poetry in there between chapters. I think it left them with more questions than answers. GENOCIDE was about questions. The answers are a mystery. I have put SOME of their comments here (and corrected at least some English). They've asked me about WHO DO I THINK THE BAD GUY IS. I think the bad guy is an accumulation of all the institutions ever conceived by man. -- Sometimes I think Tim Barrus sees the work he does as a bad guy stunt. There is a huge difference (maybe you have to know him or be around him to get this) between Tim doing the work -- the writing and the video -- and writing or commenting about doing the work. One thing is not the other thing. What I get from Tim is like teaching me how to write. I don't buy for one minute that the person he was writing about in THE LAWS OF DISTANCE, actually, it was more like from, is in any way the real Tim Barrus. The person he wrote about in THE LAWS OF DISTANCE was depraved. The Tim Barrus I know is probably too moral for his own good. Tim has to work at being bad. The picture he paints of himself, the junkie drug addict who wrote GENOCIDE, the sex animal who devours anyone who comes to his bed, is not the Tim I know. It is, however, the picture Barrus paints of himself for public consumption. The question is why. From my personal perspective, it goes to something he does talk about but I don't think most people get it. Certainly, mainstream media doesn't get it. But when Barrus talks about "writing from revenge" he's really addressing painting a picture that is the juxtaposition of good and evil although I'm not sure where the good is in this picture or where the evil is (top or bottom) and I don't think Tim knows either. I think he uses a first person perspective to "hook" the reader or the video audience in. He goes for a voice that would have you think this is his voice. But it's not the voice I know. I am of the opinion it's his performance voice and he's just using it as a tool to paint his vision. It is like an actor who is a writer but the part he likes the best is a bad guy part. I can't deny that it's a dark vision. In a weird way so is Batman. But you have to go to GENOCIDE to get the full taste of the thing. There is a part of Barrus' playfulness that gets off on being seen as the bad guy. I am thinking he finds nice guys dull. Maybe if you just read him you think he is this bad guy image he cultivates. But if you know him THE IMAGE changes. LeatherLit was the naughty Tim Barrus. I am thinking maybe it can't work today. The gay community is fragmented in different ways. I do not know this because I was not alive back in those days, but from what I read it was divided along class lines. Most of Barrus' angry stuff speaks to class inequity. That is why he hates John Updike. Updike is the old aristocracy and Barrus thinks he reads too old-world. Guys my age don't even know who Updike is. I didn't know who he was until Tim forced him down my throat. Most of the gay New York writers (and they hate Barrus' guts, I do read the hate email) would be fans of John Updike and they go for that stylized style of writing where everything is style. Like you could learn how to do that in any snooty MFA program. Personally I think Barrus made up the idea of LeatherLit just to piss off this literary crowd. The smokescreen is Barrus being about sex. Barrus is about revenge. I think he uses the whole gay thing just to piss people off. Tim knows (I think) that there probably isn't a gay leather community that would support books. It is a fashion statement. I am guessing but to Barrus I think it was somehow political. People called GENOCIDE science fiction but I think it was cultural politics. Today the gay community seems to me to be more divided along age lines. Younger guys like me don't get the older guys and they don't get us, really. The gay guys who buy books (I do not know any gay guy who buys books) just want to be mainstream. They want to be married and have kids. I don't think Barrus was ever a part of the gay community and then it changed. Today it would be more horrified of Tim than it was thirty years ago. They're going to denounce nihilism as being without hope. Like they have discovered something. Tim's nihilism is a noir. But it pisses people off and I don't think that is going to change. They think it's real. In fact, I think what he is doing in video or where he's going with it is going to piss people off more than it ever did. Barrus is essentially devoid of hope. People want hope. They want you to give it to them. They don't want to work for it. Tim demands they think. It's too much to ask. Jack Fritscher and Barrus don't share much but the one thing they do share is a challenge to the reader to stop and think. Tim bitches about publishing being a brick wall but I think the real brick wall is just plain old stupidity. Tim will not play a game of making his stuff for other people. Other people want to be liked. They use approval to give or taketh away. I started reading Barrus in Belfast. Where people are still wondering if hope is real and how long will it last. -- Kilian Sullivan -- Everyone I know is a bad guy. Even the girls I know are bad guys. -- Psacal Severins -- Barrus is full of shit. He does this whole gay thing I am just one of the boys but has anyone ever slept with him. I have. Tim is asleep. There is NO SEX. Sometimes when I am sick and tired of fucking I will sleep with him just to be safe from sex. I need a break from it and he's there. Tim likes to spit on society's values and he uses the ideas of sex and being gay to do that. He really, really doesn't care what people think about him. He would spit in their face. -- Joroen Schuyler -- I am still trying to figure out what a bad guy is. In Italy the bad guys are always the invaders from somewhere else. But the other day I was helping Barrus do that clip where Hamlet is holding Yorick's skull. Who is Hamlet talking to? Horatio or is he talking to Hamlet? "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? your gambols? your songs? your flashes of merriment, that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one now, to mock your own grinning? quite chap-fallen? Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must come; make her laugh at that." Tim is writing and making videos for the skull of Tim Barrus he would dig up when the next holocaust comes. In Italy we have a lot of skulls. I try not to look at them. I could never hold one and talk to it. You would have to be a little bit a bad guy to do it. -- Nino Fabriano -- I don't want to do LeatherLit. Who wants to be around a bunch of old guys in leather. Leather is just a bunch of guys in bars. And they're old. -- Conor McCormick -- I thought everyone had some bad guy in them. -- Andres Beaumont -- I am a bad guy and you can suck my dick. -- Aaron Nilehn -- Il y a seulement sucer. -- Michel Duras -- I do not want to write about nothing because it is always wrong. -- Thierry Boutin -- You are not always wrong, Thierry. You can be dense but you are not always wrong. Tim has it ALL wrong. A bad guy is entertainment. Dracula is entertainment when you are afraid. Tim wants us to write something about bad guys but the only one who really scares me is Tim Barrus. You think you know him, Joroen, because you sleep with him. To know him you have to schlep his fucking digital equipment around and it is evil. -- Nicolas Leveque -- I think the Bible is evil and it has bad guys. Why can't it be relative. -- Eavan O'Callaghan -- Everything is relative, Eavan. Happy now? -- Francois de Nerval -- Tim just wants you to start thinking with your head and not your cock, Thierry. -- Jos Raymer -- I think they really hate us in the States. They think we are bad guys. It is only art. -- Laurent Chevalier I don't want to do LeatherLit. I hate lit. Does it mean books? I want to make videos. A bad guy is someone who makes you do the stuff you do not want to do. -- Henri Bonnet We have statues of bad guys in Italy. -- Nino Fabriano I can't figure out who the bad guy is in the new vid. I do not get who the bad guy is in GENOCIDE either. I even need help to spell it. I think in the new vid everyone is the bad guy. The truth is that I do not care. The Joker is the bad guy, okay? -- Georges de Roland ]]>

Thank you for joining me. As always this is Voice of The Revolution. Now one might ask, who are we to interfere with the workings of politics, and just for a moment one might agree. if for that moment we have forgotten what is truly at stake --just the future of this place that we call home. And when we comprehend the vast scale of change that is needed, and the very brief timeframe in which it must occur, and that OUR failure to do it means an endless and irreversible struggle for our descendents, and into this equation comes the realization that government, education, the media and even religion have all chosen to turn AWAY from reforms that can actually address all these bad things that we see overtaking America. Through these factors we are led directly to the comprehension that a reordering of our political society is the vital obligation of our times. From : Omni Art Salon 21st Century Art Podcast
Jeffrey has a fascinating conversation with Aaron Stern, Founder, Executive Director and Core Faculty of the Academy For the Love of Learning in Santa Fe. As designer of the core curriculum at the Academy, Aaron is also a composer, performer, educator and former dean of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. Aaron consults with educational, arts, spiritual and social-change organizations and communities, around the world and is also trained and certified as a transpersonal therapist. A brainchild of a special relationship that Aaron had with the late musical genius Leonard Bernstein, the Academy for the Love of Learning draws on a wide, multidisciplinary spectrum of resources: educational philosophy and practice, the arts, transpersonal studies, contemplative traditions, earth-based wisdom, body-centered practices, psychotherapy, organizational consulting, and the wisdom distilled from personal experience. The scholar in residence at the Academy is American priest and theological exponent of Creation Spirituality Matthew Fox. Creation Spirituality is a movement grounded in the mystical philosophies of medieval visionaries Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Aquinas, Meister Eckhart and Nicholas of Cusa. Author of twenty-eight books on philosophy, religion, and spirituality, Matthew Fox’s most recent book, The A.W.E. Project: Reinventing Education, Reinventing the Human has led him into an increased engagement with issues impacting the education of children, something very dear to the heart of The Academy and Aaron Sterns vision. In Aaron’s and the Academy’s view, who we are as human beings is indicated by the depth of our openness to life, our engagement with our process of learning, and our self-awareness and capacity to be as fully awake as imaginable with one another. because of this viewpoint, the Academy is strongly experiential and calls forth a high degree of self-reflection, both individual and collective. This ground of deepening self-awareness provides the stability and freedom from which right action can grow. I think you will find my conversation with Aaron warm, stimulating and uplifting because he is dedicated to living a life focused on the highest aspects of the human experience and bringing out the best in others so that they too can really enjoy the love of learning that is the deepest of human birthright’s. This was combinedstory Island in Second Life, then Oia, discontinued and later raised finding a new life as a much regaled mixed reality piece with its subsequent owner. I shot this machinima footage and set it to Bruch as opposed to mournful Handel, which I'll save for something even darker. I ran this sim just as the Wind-ight viewer thankfully emerged. This is for Katherine who patiently sat through the months it took for me to build the models, then complain about them getting torn down!
