Najma Akhtar and Gary Lucas Add New Shades to Global Blues

Najma Akhtar and Gary Lucas Add New Shades to Global Blues

from Spinner on July 28, 2009
Duration: 0
Filed under: Around the World It's like something from Sergio Leone. Or Quentin Tarantino. Najma Akhtar answered a knock on the door of her London flat one day in 2006 to find a mysterious man standing there, cowboy hat on his head, guitar case in his hand. "He walked in with his cowboy hat, whipped his guitar out and said, 'OK, let's do something.' " she recalls by phone from that same locale. The result was less gruesome than what might have happened with one of those directors involved, though just as artistically satisfying. In fact, the results would fit nicely in a Tarantino soundtrack: Najma Akhtar and Gary Lucas, 'Special Rider Blues' Yes, that's Skip James' 'Special Rider Blues,' a song the blues legend originally recorded in the 1920s and one of the essential, haunted entries of the Delta blues canon. But it's a good bet you've never heard it like this, performed by singer Akhtar and Gary Lucas, that hat-topped guitar man. It's one of the many highlights of their new collaborative album, 'Rishte.'

Where in Heaven is Mozart?

Where in Heaven is Mozart?

from STL Ocarina on February 27, 2008
Duration: 276
This is our little "Mozart" and she is 18 months into a multi year, open ended trip around the world, that started when she was five. She started playing the violin at 23 months old, so we thought it would be fun to mark her unique odyssey by playing her violin around the world at key places. This is the first installment, with the most exciting moment being her concert in the Sahara. She rode in on a camel and played for 60 Berber kids that have no running water and have never seen a violin. The beauty that we are seeing and the kindness of people every where, makes this world seem like heaven. This experience has been a great gift to us and we would like to share some of it with you. Enjoy!
