The Philosophy of War (2)
from Military History Podcast April 07, 2008
According to Lawrence Keeley, 90-95% of known societies engage in war . Why? What compels homo sapiens to kill each other? Why do we fight? Part one will describe two hypotheses. War is Necessary: Aristotle says in Nicomachean Ethics that we fight war so that we may live in peace . This notion is echoed by many other famous thinkers including Marx (an advocate of a final proletarian revolution in order to establish a worker's paradise) and Zoroaster (the first monotheist to discuss the final battle of judgment between good and evil). War is Logical: Using Darwin's logic, mankind continues to fight wars because it is the means through which our species survives. Thomas Malthus adapted this into a population argument, stating that humans fight wars in order to keep populations small and manageable. Samuel Huntington took this one step further by saying that war negates massive youth bulges. Lastly, John Nash (the economist) proved, through game theory, that war is a more logical choice than peace. War is Accidental: AJP Taylor argued that all wars are unintended and unhappy escalations of smaller conflicts. Warmongering is neither inherent nor unavoidable. Taylor's ideas link closely to the pacifistic ideas of Tolstoy and Gandhi. Quote by Aristotle introduces an artistic rendering by Charles Collins on www.CapucinesBoulevard.com. "When I'm painting it's like creating an image of the attributes of God, creating the same vibration that created you, like a loop that feeds back to you in a circle of life, with the same resonance." - Charles Collins The mission of CapucinesBoulevard is to bring the work of both established and emerging contemporary artists to the attention of the widest possible audience, and to provide a marketplace for that art to be sold and auctioned. Our goal is to make art a more accessible and desired part of everyday life. www.CapucinesBoulevard.com

Grapes: The Sequel

Air resistance you say? Can we eliminate or reduce it to the point where it does not matter? You bet. Just like the “hammer and feather” from Apollo 15, only better because it’s in your own home.

YUI Theater — David Weinberger in Conversation with Bradley Horowitz
from Yahoo! User Interface Blog May 12, 2007
This is a little bit off our usual beat here on YUIBlog, but when David Weinberger (author of Small Pieces Loosely Joined and one of the most consistently engaging voices in the technosphere) stops by Yahoo! to talk about the world, its people, and their relationship to information well, that seems like something worth sharing. David dropped in to have a wide-ranging conversation with Yahoo s Bradley Horowitz with topics spinning out from David s new book, Everything Is Miscellaneous. Among many important insights, here s the essense of David s thesis in the new book: Categories are now applied to content when it is extracted from the infospace, whereas historically curators of information (such as librarians) have invested immense energy in organizing information on its way in. Here are a few additional nuggets to look forward to in the dialogue: David argues that we are moving into a post-Aristotilean posture with respect to how information is organized, overthrowing a regime of philosophy that held for two millennia. Everything has to have a place in a physical library. Given that so many of our ideas ore written on on paper, we have regimes of power. People who control the information have the power. But the book is an argument against the sense that there s a right way to organize the world. The instinct that built the internet is, You want to post it, post it. We ll figure out later how to find it. We ll invent as many techniques as we possibly can to help you find it. Video of the conversation is available in an embeddable and platform-agnostic Flash format (embedded below) and as an iPod-compatible download. (If your computer doesn t recognize the .m4v file, try renaming it to .mp4. In Case You Missed Some other recent videos from the YUI Theater series: John Resig: Advancing JavaScript with Libraries (Yahoo!
